The purpose of this investigation was to study the factors affecting the electrolytic production of hydrogen peroxide from hydrogen and oxygen. The mechanism of this reaction throws light on the production and chemistry of hydrogen peroxide, electrochemistry of hydrogen, oxygen and water and the mechanism of corrosion. This investigation involved the study of the formation and decomposition of hydrogen peroxide at the cathode of an electrolytic cell. Zinc, mercury, magnesium alloy F-S-l, aluminum, lead and activated carbon electrodes in 5 N sodium hydroxide, 0.1018 N sodium hydroxide, and 0.01018 N potassium hydroxide, saturated ammonium chloride and 0.043 N phosphoric acid were studied. / M.S.

A method for setup time reduction in high precision machine cells

This research focused on an important aspect of production, machine changeover, or setup time. Setup time is defined as the elapsed time between producing the last part from the most recent lot to the first part of an incoming lot. The research had four objectives. First, an existing method to reduce machine changeover time was evaluated in a high-precision machine cell (HPMC). Second, the causes and effects of setup problems in an HPMC were identified. Third, a method to reduce setup time was developed to more fully address some of the identified problems. Fourth, the developed method was evaluated in another HPMC. After reviewing published setup reduction methodologies, the Single Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED) approach was selected for evaluation in machine cells. According to its developer, SMED can typically reduce setup time by 70 to 90%. The case study did not fully support this claim. Possible explanations for the mixed results were developed. Also, a number of setup problems were not fully corrected. These problems included machine and tooling failures, delays from tasks not completed at the machine area, and labor-related problems. A method to reduce setup time was developed. The method applied the work simplification approach to reduce setup time. The developed setup reduction method consisted of five steps: (1) document the existing method, (2) simplify the current method while using the same tooling and procedures, (3) identify opportunities to reduce setup time, (4) prioritize the opportunities and (5) implement the prioritized projects. The method includes the basic setup reduction principles of SMED and addresses problems that were not fully corrected by SMED. The developed method was tested in another high-precision machine cell. An additional 22% reduction in setup time occurred as a result of correcting problems not fully addressed by SMED. It was concluded that because the new method focused on the manpower, materials, and methodology used during a changeover, it reduced setup time further than existing methods. / Master of Science

Determination of phenotypic characteristics, production systems, productivity, and contribution of local chickens to households in North-Central Namibia

The phenotypic characteristics, level of production, management system and contribution of the local chickens to household studied in the north central Namibia. The study involved both qualitative and quantitative methods to gather the data. The questionnaire was used for survey while phenotypic characteristics and egg production forms were used to collect the actual data. The findings revealed that farmers in the study area regarded chicken production as their primary source of domestic animal protein, with the domestic fowl being the most widely kept poultry species. Other uses are participation in socio-cultural ceremonies, selling for money and gifts. The average number of eggs per clutch ranged from 10 to 15. The hatchability ranged between 50% and 60%). Phenotypic characteristics measures revealed the absence of pure white plumage colour that can be associated with the introduction of White Leghorn to the flock. Generally, normal feather cover was the main feather morphology of local chicken populations in north central Namibia. However, features like crested heads, naked necked, frizzling, and feathered shanks occurred sporadically among local chickens in the study area. Fifty-seven percentages of chickens in the surveyed region had single comb, while 29.6% and 13.8% had rose and pea combs respectively. The most frequent shank colour was black followed by yellow, whitish, orange, and reddish shank. The wing span had positive correlation with body weight and chest circumference at (r = 0.994). Other researchers discover the strong correlation of chest circumference with length shank at (r = 0.827). The current study attained the mean body weight of 1.7 to 2.1 kg of both sexes combined which falls within the range of 1.6 to 2.18 kg reported by (Alabi et al. 2012). In conclusion, the current study revealed large variation of phenotypical characteristics with poor correlation to their productivity due to lack of record keeping although production forms were made available to the farmers. The part of productivity according to their identified phenotypic characteristics is not accepted nor rejected due to poor records, but recommended for further study with training on record keeping by farmers / College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences / M. Using a productivity measurement model to drive gainsharing

This research shows how a state-of-the-art, plant and firm level, productivity measurement model, the Total Factor Productivity Measurement Model (TFPMM) can be used to drive an organization's gainsharing effort. The TFPMM uses accounting data from actual operations to isolate the dollar effects on profits due to changes in productivity and price recovery. Two case study examples are used. The first case study involves a manufacturing firm and evaluates how the TFPMM can be used in that organization for gainsharing. The second case study involves a service firm and describes how that organization plans to use the TFPMM to drive its gainsharing effort. This research also examines the role of gainsharing in the performance management process and in performance management efforts. The critical interrelationships between gainsharing and other components of an organization's management system and compensation system are explored. Various gainsharing approaches are reviewed and presented with an emphasis placed on design variables associated with a gainsharing effort. A methodology for TFPMM implementation and for gainsharing system design, development and implementation is presented and described. The research balances rigor with relevance to assist managers and practitioners with the design and development of measurement and reward systems. / Master of Science
