Dynamic damping properties of elastomers and composite panels for low noise diesel engines

The most practical treatment for reducing the noise of present diesel engines is to replace the thin-section, noise-radiating components with constrained damping layers, where a viscoelastic layer is sandwiched between two elastic layers to give the composite panel high damping characteristics. The damping ability of such panels is highly dependent on dynamic shear properties of viscoelastic materials as well as on the selection of elastic materials. The damping shear properties of viscoelastic materials are highly dependent on frequency and temperature. Experimental data on the damping properties of viscoelastic materials are, so far, limited to a small low frequency range. The forced vibration non-resonant technique is adopted in the present investigation. Atest rig has been designed, built and developed to measure the dynamic shear properties of some visoelastic materials over a wide range of temperature (40 to 1000C). These properties are also measured over a wide range of frequency (50-1500 Hz), covering part of the audio frequency range, in which the severity of engine noise occurs. Polysulphide rubber and ethylene propylene rubber have been tested. Their dynamic shear properties have been obtained, tabulated and plotted as functions of frequency and temperature. The effect of strain amplitude has been investigated and discussed. A new approach for an easy, fast and direct measurement of the loss shear modulus has been proposed. It has been found that both viscoelastic materials possess considerable damping, especially over the frequency range of 900-1500 Hz. The effect of strain amplitude was found negligible. The optimum design and damping ability of three layer composite panels have been investigated. The effects of elastic and viscoelastic material on the damping of these panels has been examined. Magnesium has been found to be a superior elastic material of those investigated. Aluminium is the next most suitable elastic material, with steel as the least suitable elastic material. Polysulphide rubber and ethylene propylene rubber have been found suitable for use in composite damping panels, but their relative attractiveness is strongly dependent on frequency and temperature.

Magnetic susceptibility scaling of rocks using geostatistical analysis : an approach to geologic and geophysical model integration

Rock physical properties are usually associated with important geologic features within mineral deposits and can be used to define the location, depth and size of the deposit, type of ore, or physical property contrast between the host and country rock. Geophysical surveys are sensitive to physical properties and therefore are widely used in mining exploration, especially in concealed terrains. The surveys can be performed at multiple scales, resulting in corresponding physical property datasets at different scales. Survey scale can vary from core or hand sample, involving few cubic centimeters, to regional-scale surveys providing information about physical property contrasts between distinct regional geological features. The understanding of the relationship between the physical property distributions with the sample volume (e.g. district, deposit, and drill-hole scale) is required where point scale physical property measurements are going to be consistent with measurements at larger volumetric scales during the integration of data for geophysical modeling The approach used to address the problem of understanding the scaling relations of physical properties, was achieved by considering them as second order stationary regionalized variables and then applying the random function formalism, provided by geostatistics theory. Geostatistics provide the required framework to characterize, quantify, model and link the spatial variability of the random variable at the different volumetric scales. The aim of this study is to apply geostatistics to effectively integrate data collected at several scales and bring knowledge to the understanding of the scaling relations of magnetic susceptibility. For this purpose, measurements of magnetic susceptibility available from Flin Flon copper-zinc district in Canada will be used. The data available at point scale were collected with hand portable magnetic susceptibility meter. The larger volumetric scale dataset were acquired using frequency domain electromagnetic instruments capable of measuring larger sample volumes, and then used to obtain magnetic susceptibility models using geophysical inversion algorithms. Once different scale models of magnetic susceptibility were available, quantification of the scaling relation using geostatistics, specifically variogram models and dispersion variance were determined. The understanding provided by the scaling analysis of the Flin-Flon magnetic data is applied to data from the Rio Blanco copper district in central Chile. Magnetic susceptibility measurements collected with a hand magnetic susceptibility meter on drill-core is integrated in larger scale volumes used for geophysical inversion modeling of regional scale airborne magnetic field measurements to recover magnetic susceptibility models. The methodology resulting from this application of geostatistics is used to address the problem of integrating multiple scales of physical property data in an effective way. The resulting physical property models capture the small-scale magnetic susceptibility variability observed and can guide larger-scale variability within geophysical inversion models. Establishing reliable statistical correlations between physical properties and rock units controlling ore within deposits are crucial steps leading predictive mine exploration tools. Any numerical modeling approach to establish these correlations should consider in some way the scaling nature of both physical property and ore content.

Biosynthesis and characterisation of polyhydroxyalkanoate based natural-synthetic hybrid copolymers.

Natural-synthetic hydrid biomaterials have been isolated from the growth of Alcaligenes latus and Pseudomonas oleovorans in the presence of diethylene glycol (DEG). A. latus could cometabolise DEG with 10 g/L glucose, while DEG was consumed by P. oleovorans with 20 mM sodium octanoate or octanoic acid. The presence of DEG in bioprocessing systems for the production of short chain length (scl-) and medium chain length (mcl-) PHAs consequently lowered cell viability and PHA yield. Cell morphology was slightly changed, but the PHA inclusion bodies apparently were not. DEG affected the composition of the mclPHA which was confirmed to be polyhydroxyoctanoate (PHO) with a significant increase in the C8 component. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to quantitatively monitor DEG in the system and revealed its cellular adsorption. Intracellularly, the DEG significantly decreased the molar weight of the mclPHA and sclPHA. P1PH NMR, 2-D COSY and HSQC spectra confirmed that the polymer samples consisted of PHA chains terminated by DEG. Similar to the cultivation of P. oleovorans with DEG, the presence of PEG200 and PEG400 also had an effect on cell growth, PHO yield and cell viability. Furthermore, a hybrid copolymer of PHO-PEG200 was synthesised. The synthesis of these natural-synthetic hybrid copolymers could lead the way for a wide variety of PHA-PEG copolymers with a range of bioactive properties. All thermal properties of PHB were higher than those of PHB-DEG. This may be due to a combination of lower PHB molecular weight and termination of the chains by DEG, i.e. ???DEGylation???. However, PHB-DEG was more elastomeric when compared to PHB, showing properties similar to its copolymer with 20 mol% 3-hydroxyvalerate. Contact angles revealed that the PHB-DEG film was slightly more hydrophilic than PHB. Despite the large difference in their respective proportions, the comparatively small DEG component exerted an influence on chain confirmation, such that solvent casting under humid conditions apparently induced self-assembly and formed a disordered microporous film. DEGylation of PHO also had noticeable effects on the physiochemical properties of the biopolymer. A major decrease in molecular weight, together with the termination of hydrophobic PHO chains with hydrophilic end-groups resulted in changes to its thermal properties when compared to PHO. In comparison to PHO, solvent cast films of PHO-DEG were apparently less flexible, but more hydrophilic.
