Asymmetric quasi-free (p,2p) reactions induced by po1arized protons are ana1ysed. The absorption and refraction of the fast protons in the nucleus enhances the cross section for the knock-o ut of protons with a certain polarization which depends on their momentum and on the resulting hole state. Effective polarizations, distorted momentum distributions and angular correlation cross sections are calculated within the DWIA approximation for the hole states of 16o and 40 ca at 215 and 320 MeV incideht energy. lt is shown that the effects of the real part of the central optical potentials on the distorted momentum distributions and on the effective polarizations are considerable. A qualitative e xpl anation of this fact is presented. The importance of the spin-orbit distortion, which could in principle upset the usual simple interpretation of quasi-free scattering with po1arized protons, is quantitative1y estimated. The effects obtained for 320 MeV proton scattering on 16o and 40 ca are actually small. The results show that the use of incident po1arized proton beams enhances the power of quasi-free reactions as an investigation tool of the nuclear structure and suggest the possibility of testing some approximations which are of general interest for the theory of medium energy reactions, as, for example, the impulse approximation.
