The relationship between attachment theory and transformational leadership in California community college chief executive officers

Wyse, Joe 28 May 2014 (has links)

This study examines a relatively new area of investigation: the relationship between attachment theory (Bowlby, 1973, 1980, 1982) and transformational leadership theory. Using self-report surveys and controlling for demographic variables, California community college chief executive officers’ (CEOs) attachment styles and transformational leadership characteristics are measured and the potential relationship between them examined (N=74). The two measures used are Kouzes and Posner’s (2002a) Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) and Brennan, Clark, and Shaver’s (1998) Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (ECR).

No significant correlation between attachment scores and the demographic variables was found in the study. Three moderate strength positive correlations were found between LPI scores and the demographic variables: between age and the LPI Enable Others to Act score, between female CEOs and the LPI Challenge the Process score, and between female CEOs and the LPI total score. The analysis demonstrated moderate correlations between the two attachment scales and the five transformational leadership characteristics as well as the LPI total score, with all 12 resulting correlations being negative and significant at the p <.05 level both before and after controlling for demographic variables.

The moderate correlation found in this study between more securely attached leaders and their self-assessed transformational leadership style found provides insight into the complex fields of leadership study and personality theory. Implications include the possibility of incorporating attachment and leadership measures into employee selection to better match desired styles to the organization’s needs. Individual leaders may also be able to leverage the relationship explored in this study to further their personal leadership development.

Social capital in the production gap| Social networking services and their transformative role in civic engagement

McQuiston, James M. 13 June 2014 (has links)

Social networking services are used by a large segment of society; Facebook claims that 1 billion users are active on their website. The potential role for social networking in civic engagement is substantial, and this dissertation expands upon previous research in its examination of the relationship between social networking use and civic engagement. Prior research into the effect of social networking services on social capital creation is limited in terms of generalizability and predictive power. The dissertation explores the determinants of social networking service use, the impact that social networking services have on the creation of social capital, and how social networking website use modifies a respondent's level of generalized trust and political efficacy.

The sample utilized in this dissertation includes 2,303 respondents from the Social Side of the Internet Survey, conducted in November and December of 2010. The dissertation utilizes this data to examine social networking intensity as a hypothesized determinant of indirect and direct forms of social capital. Models explore the decision to utilize the internet, social networking services (SNS), and to join traditional groups, evaluating the hypothesis that SNS usage creates social capital through a different pathway than online or physical interactions. Results provide early support for this hypothesis, as the factors influencing the decision to utilize social networking are separate from those modifying online or group activity.

The explanatory power of social networking intensity is compared to demographic and group-centered conceptions of social capital generation. The data supports the conception that SNS intensity is a significant determinant of external political efficacy and social capital, but is unable to identify a relationship between social networking intensity and generalized trust.

By examining the role that social networking services play alongside factors such as age, education, internet use, gender, race, socioeconomic class, technology, and group association, the dissertation tests hypotheses important to political science sub-fields including American politics, civic engagement, and political theory. Future research examining social networking and civic engagement needs to consider how governmental representatives view the social capital generated by social networking services.

Massively multiplayer online games as a sandbox for leadership| The relationship between in and out of game leadership behaviors

Mendoza, Sean Henry Veloria 19 June 2014 (has links)

Given society's increasingly technology centric play and workplace environment, Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOs) can be an excellent sandbox to develop future leaders of teams, which are the lifeblood of any organization. MMOs like World of WarCraft provide rich immersive experiences that allow leaders and followers the ability to create highly complex ecosystems that can mimic some of the largest out of game organizations. In game they can potentially gain valuable insights, which can later be applied to the workplace. This study explores Leadership characteristics appearing in and out of game. A combination of identity theories and leadership characteristics provide a greater understanding of possible relationships that may be occurring between leaders and followers; and in and out of multiplayer video game environments. Using transformational leadership as a framework, 6 leaders were interviewed, and assessed with the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). Also, their guild communities were examined for evidence of leadership behaviors. The results found relationships between a leader's in and out of game characteristics with values and contexts in the workplace between leader, community, and follower. These relationships create and shape the lived experiences of leaders providing them the insights to create connections between relevant contexts in game with their workplace environment. This study identifies leadership stories, that can been employed in the workplace for the benefit of the organization; and the use group play spaces as a place to practice leadership operations of a business. Through these narratives, leaders can better understand the values that shape their identity; the relevant contexts that enabled the appearance of leadership characteristics in and out of game; and an opportunity to connect with a community aligned to teach leaders how to be.

Discipline in the Philippine Context| Factors Affecting Parents' Use of Corporal Punishment

Manaay, Soledad Muesco 16 April 2014 (has links)

The purpose of this study was to explore the attitudes and practice of corporal punishment (CP) among Filipino parents and the factors that may impact their use of harsh punishment. Thirty-five parents, between the ages of 33 and 55 years old, participated in a group survey that was held in Manila, Philippines.

It was predicted that CP, as a form of discipline, would be prevalent among Filipino parents; it was also predicted that CP would be higher among parents of low economic status and that there were mitigating factors that impact Filipino parents' use of CP. Based on quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data collected, this study did not support all three hypotheses, although it showed that the use of CP was relatively high at 37%.

This study may provide evidence of a need for social support for both parents and children through family intervention programs and parenting training.

Heterosexual versus gay men| Self-esteem, body investment, social support and narcissism traits

Sanchez-Azpeitia, Horacio 23 April 2014 (has links)

This quantitative study compared the following concepts between heterosexual men and gay men: (a) self-esteem, (b) body image, (c) social support, and (d) narcissism traits. The same survey was given to 50 males, 26 of the males identified themselves as heterosexual while 24 identified themselves as gay. The findings reveal that out of the four concepts, only body investment was significantly related to participant's sexual orientation. Gay males in this study invested more on their body when compared to their heterosexual counterparts, while there was no significant relationship between selfesteem, body image, and social support for either sexual orientation.

The Global Relational Attitudes Conflict Exam (Grace) Scale| An Exploratory Factor Analysis

Cook, Joseph Dale 24 April 2014 (has links)

This study examined the reliability and validity of the Global Relational Attitudes Conflict Exam (GRACE) Scale. Individuals were studied using an online survey to determine if the GRACE scale had reliable and interpretable components, and if the scale produced statistically significant levels of internal reliability. The study also evaluated for both convergent and discriminant validity through comparison of the scale with several selected assessments. A total of 333 participants participated in the survey. An exploratory factor analysis of the data produced from survey results revealed that the GRACE scale had reliable and interpretable components. Descriptive statistics and correlation coefficient comparisons of the data demonstrated that the scale was internally reliable and valid. The hypotheses were confirmed.

Keywords: grace, gratitude, appreciation, thankfulness, revenge, vengeance, relational conflict

Seeking Status| The Process of Becoming and Remaining as an Emergency Department Nurse

Winters, Nancy 10 June 2014 (has links)

Understanding the processes involved in retaining nurses in the Emergency Department is essential for future hiring and retention; turnover rates are currently at approximately 16% in the emergency department. Using Grounded Theory Methods (Glaser & Strauss, 1967) and the conceptual framework of symbolic interaction, the process of becoming and remaining as an ED nurse was explored.

Data were collected through semi-structured, open ended interviews until data saturation occurred. The seven participants' ages ranged from 29-56 with ED nursing experience ranging from 1-17 years and nursing experience from 2-18 years. Five phases emerged from data analysis using constant comparative analysis of 183 pages of transcripts, through coding phrases, categorizing, and conceptualizing them. These phases, each with sub-categories, explained a process identified as Seeking Status. The five phases were: joining the troops, working in the trenches, passing muster, earning stripes, and looking ahead. Passing Muster emerged as the core category, the one that best explained the process and connected the other conceptual categories in this process.

The theory, Seeking Status, was compared to and contrasted with theories from nursing, sociology and anthropology such as socialization, rites of passage, adaptation, role identity, and reality shock. The theory overlapped with some of the theories explored; however it was unique in the finding regarding the significance of a two-tiered hierarchy of roles in the ED.

Implications for recruitment strategies, longer orientations and the need for preceptors for new nurses were described. Senior nurses, on the other hand, would benefit from increasing knowledge and skills regarding leadership and management strategies in their role.

The anima in animation| Miyazaki heroines and post-patriarchal consciousness

Shore, Lesley Anne 27 November 2014 (has links)

This dissertation explores how the heroines in Hayao Miyazaki animations subvert the antiquated, patriarchal models of the conquering hero that predominate Western literature and cinema. As unifying agents of change, such heroines use communal solutions to conflict by rejecting militarism, refuting stereotypical gender roles and reversing environmental destruction. Five Miyazaki animations are reviewed: My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. The protagonists in these films undertake a voyage of balance inspired by Shinto animism and Japanese mythological traditions that reflect the heroine's journey schema and the individuation process that is the zenith of depth psychology. I argue that Miyazaki heroines are not solely aligned with Jungian theories of the anima as a contrasexual projection of a male, but rather as the spark of life that ignites the storyline.

The intention of this work is to examine the role of the anima rich heroine by drawing upon the depth psychological theories of James Hillman, Hayao Kawai, Marie- Louise von Franz, Ginette Paris and Christine Downing. At the same time, Miyazaki heroines are contrasted with the Disney princesses that reinforce traditional heterosexual norms and other pop culture protagonists that support androcentric order.

To attain a holistic vision of the world, the Miyazaki heroine must overcome the patriarchal constructs of her society that would otherwise disempower her. Such heroines exert their strength of character through compassionate understanding of the oppositional characters within the film story rather than viewing them as foes to be destroyed. Miyazaki heroines discover equilibrium of self by meeting their unconscious shadow aspects and positively integrating them instead of projecting them negatively onto others.

The anima rich, complex heroine in Miyazaki animations is a transformative protagonist that represents an emerging heroic and mythic model for a global community in transition. Drawing from soul more than ego, she contributes to an evolving collective psyche that bears the potential to heal and reshape this nascent post-patriarchal world.

Cognitive processes and moderators of willingness in individuals with social anxiety disorder and non-anxious controls in response to a social performance task

Wadsworth, Lauren P. 04 February 2015 (has links)

The present study investigated differences between individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and non-anxious controls (NAC) on measures of thought processes and anxiety responses surrounding an anxiety-provoking situation. Participants gave a spontaneous speech to an audience and reported their anxiety throughout. Measures of trait decentering and anxiety, situational anxiety, negative thoughts and believability, and willingness to repeat the task were administered. Compared to NAC, individuals with SAD reported a higher prevalence of negative thoughts, found the thoughts more believable, reported lower levels of trait decentering, and reported less willingness to repeat an anxiety-provoking task. Collapsing the groups, we found an inverse relationship between the amount of negative thoughts and willingness to repeat the task, and a positive correlation between decentering and willingness. We did not find evidence to support that decentering and believability moderate this relationship. The present study partially supports the proposed model of SAD, as the SAD and NAC groups differed at each step of the proposed model, however moderation analyses were not significant.
