The objective of this research is to analyze the short stories "I fatali", "Un osso di morto" "Le leggende del castello nero", "La lettera U" and "Uno Spirito in un lampone" present in Racconti fantastici work, 1869 of Igino Ugo Tarchetti. Through analyzes, the central themes of each story will be demonstrated, as well as how the fantastic is manifested in these narratives. In addition to the core subjects, will be the narrative procedures used exposed and the narrator's attitude towards the object narrated, among other elements such as the atmosphere and the presence or absence of supernatural elements. The aim is to demonstrate the presence of the fantastic literary mode and how it developed in Italy against their spread in countries like Germany, France and England, whereas in Italian soil the current literary movement was Romanticism, whose features were not compatible with those present in fantastic tales in general. Finally, we intend to demonstrate how Igino Ugo Tarchetti contributed to the development of fantastic literature in Italy. In order to achieve the desired goal, the work is structured as follows: first, presents the introduction to the structure of each chapter that will be developed in this work. Soon after, the historical and literary context, in three other parts will be addressed: Italian Romanticism versus European Romanticism, showing the differences between them; Scapigliatura - exposure of the main characteristics of the movement to which Tarchetti is linked - and finally, a brief summary about the writer, whose focus is on the characteristics of his literary production. In sequence, the fanciful theories with the explanation about the points presented by Remo Ceserani and Tzvetan Todorov that served as support for the analysis will be displayed, which will be held in the fourth chapter. At the end there will be the final considerations about the research, highlighting the characteristics and influences of Tarchetti in the preparation of the stories that make up the corpus of this work.

Sessanta racconti: the surrealist aesthetics in Dino Buzzati\'s tales

Pinto, Paula Parise 16 January 2008 (has links)
The aim of the present dissertation was to study the tales in the book Sessanta Racconti (1958) to analyze the relation between author\'s style within the surrealist aesthetics. We tried to identify similarities, transposition or review, through the study of specific surrealistic elements (objective hazard, black humour, dream, marvelous and fantastic) that was used by Buzzati to create his 16 selected tales. Thus we intend to show a idea of the Buzzati´s surrealism, different of another surrealist manifestations, but at the same time in dialogue with the aesthetic model related to André Breton and his followers. Finally we intend to improve the author\'s researches, with suggestions for the development of new approaches to analysis and translations of Buzzati\'s works.

Boris Leonidovic Pasternak e La Prosa: Esempi dagli anni Venti

VIANELLO, SERENA 02 July 2009 (has links)
The present dissertation is dedicated to Pasternak's early prose with a focus on the tales Čerta Apellesova, Pis’ma iz Tuly e Detstvo Ljuvers of the 1910s and on two examples from his narrative prose of the 1920s: Vozdušnye puti e Povest’. The analysis of the texts is made following a global look on Pasternak's creation, as it was recently pointed out by the publication of his complete work. The simultaneous presence of prose and poetry in his whole production and their fusion in the prose texts is linked to his esthetical thought and to his experience of art as reflecting a new vision of reality. His prose is a realisation and at the same time an analysis of that new experience. The dissertation thus consists of a general section dedicated to the description of Pasternak's prose reconstructed from the critique and of a path through the author's theoretical and autobiographical writings on art followed by the tales reading. The first three of them exemplify the nature of art as Pasternak experienced and conceived it and the last two, written in the 1920s, introduce the confrontation of art's main assignment, its connection to life, with the challenges of contemporary history.

Il ciclo di racconti Nord-Americano : serialità e variazioni nell'opera di Alice Munro / The Nord-American short story cycle : series and variations in Alice Munro's work / Le cycle de nouvelles nord-américain : séries et variations dans l'oeuvre d'Alice Munro

Licata, Chiara 04 March 2019 (has links)
My research aims at studying the Nord-American short story in relation to a form to which it is inextricably linked, the short story cycle, which, halfway between history and novel, is set as a series of interconnected stories presenting some recurring elements (characters, place, themes). The reflection on the short story cycle will give priority to the analysis of Alice Munro's work placed in a comparative perspective, in relation and continuity, not only with the work of 'Canadian writers' masters' of the genre, but also with the tradition of the American short story cycle.

Além disso, verificaremos a presença do humor pirandeliano nos contos e na retomada intertextual, partindo da hipótese de que Moravia, ao utilizar-se dos mitos e compor tais contos em chave metafórica, pôde veicular sua crítica à realidade existencial italiana, relacionada aos acontecimentos da primeira metade do século XX / The aim of the present study is to analyze, firstly, the intertextual dialogue between the short stories of Racconti Surrealisti e Satirici, by the italian writer Alberto Moravia and Greek and Roman mythology. Based on the studies of Laurent Jenny and Julia Kristeva, we intend to observe new meanings brought to the narratives as a result of that dialogue. Furthermore, we aim at verifying the presence of humor, as defined by Luigi Pirandello, in those short stories and in the intertextual relation, based on the hypothesis that Moravia, by using myths and by composing his narratives as metaphors, could witness the italian existential reality related to the happenings in the first half of twentieth century

THE RECEPTION OF DANIEL TALES IN EARLY CHRISTIANITIES (II - IV CENTURY)

VALENTI, CELESTE 04 May 2016 (has links)
The subject of the present work is the study of the paleochristian exegesis of the “tales” included in the Book of Daniel, in a pluridisciplinary perspective which examines the evidences coming from both iconography and literature. The work takes into account the documentation from the origins of iconography (end of the II century), to the so-called “Constantinian period”, including materials coming from every geographic context of ancient Christianity. The research is divided in three sections, according to the principal hermeneutic traditions of the “typological”, “allegoric” and “literary” reception of the biblical text, mainly highlighting the role assumed by the “tales” in the formation of the ancient martyrdom theology. The analysis assumes an historical-critical method, mainly focusing on the comparison between two different documentary categories, which attest the variety and the heterogeneity of the biblical interpretation activated in the first communities. The inclusion of the figurative source derives from its revaluation: more than “biblia pauperum”, the ancient iconography, produced in the context of liturgy, expresses an independent and original tradition of the “tales” reception. Under this point of view, the complex interpretation of the Book of Daniel offers a good paradigm to understand, in a wider sense, the processes determining the formation of paleochristian thought.

Bonino, Vittorio 11 April 2022 (has links)
Title: Vladimir Nabokov’s Russian short stories (1921-1942): The game between real and supernatural in short fiction. In this Ph.D. research project, I examined several short stories written by Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977). I focused my attention on the relationship between the real and the supernatural and examined how such a relationship evolved over the years. My research aims to highlight how Nabokov introduced innovations in the European literary tradition with his supernatural short fiction. The core of Nabokov’s first short stories is a binary opposition between something that can be described as real (or realistic), and something that belongs to the realm of the fantastic. The dynamic tension between the real and the supernatural allows Nabokov to renew the European and Russian tradition of “novellas” and supernatural tales. Gradually, Nabokov phased out the fantastic elements and focused on the inner life of the characters that he unveiled through a series of epiphanic moments. The evolution of Nabokov’s short fiction reflects the crisis of the artistic representation experienced by the European intellectuals at the beginning of the 20th century. Nabokov experimented with different kinds of narratives forms to examine the condition of the Russian immigrants and how they relied on imagination and memory to deal with the pain of exile. In this regard, he underscores that only the act of remembering can give new life to the lost past thus conferring dignity to the troublesome present life. The first chapter starts with an overview of numerous studies on short fiction to determine what a “short story” actually is. I then examine the definition of “real” and “supernatural” as well as the most significant scholars’ interpretations of Nabokov’s short stories. Subsequently, I investigate the social, cultural, and historical background of Nabokov’s stories. Finally, I present a chronological list of the stories examined in the thesis. In the second chapter, I carry out the analysis of the short stories I selected for my research. Most of the stories are characterized by the presence of fantastic and supernatural elements. I divided the stories into five different sections, each dedicated to a specific type of supernatural. In this chapter, I examine the different interpretations that have been offered by Nabokov scholars and I provide a new understanding of the evolution of Nabokov’s narrative. In the third chapter, I analyze the relationship among the different short stories to draw a hermeneutic map of the transformations of the narrative core and the themes of the stories. In the conclusion, I outline the main insights of my research.

Awakening the Calabrian Story: The Diverse Manifestations of Acquiring Knowledge

Marchese, Pina 02 March 2011 (has links)
It all began in the village. We would wake up with the sun, we would rest our laboured bodies underneath the moon. Gli vecchi (old folks) often told us: “In the end, all that will remain is our story. Nothing else really matters.” This thesis “Awakening the Calabrian Story: The Diverse Manifestations of Acquiring Knowledge” will take you into the lives of ten Southern Italian women from Calabria. They will lure you back to their villages: their place of birth, their hearth, to the midst of the olive trees. Their stories will then migrate to Canada, as these women take their first steps on Pier 21. “In the end, all that matters is our stories.” This thesis will give voice to ten Southern Italian women who will tell the world what, to them, matters most. They will tell their tales and pass on the wisdom they have learned along the way. With each breath and each step, they are always growing, never remaining the same. They go along and live out their villages wherever the thread takes them. This thesis itinerary will begin in the village, follow a journey across the Atlantic Ocean to a life in Canada. Chapter One: (Introduction) will outline and describe the background, purpose and objectives, on this journey of awakening. Chapter Two: (Literature Review) will look at pedagogical perspectives in curriculum theory. Chapter Three: (Methodology) will focus on the research methodology applied throughout this thesis process. Chapter Four: (Stories as Data) will lure readers into the personal lives and experiences of participants. Chapter Five: (Interpretation of Stories) will reveal the analysis of acquired knowledge as reported by participants. This thesis itinerary will continue and conclude by the fireside with a collection of Calabrian folktales told by these participants, and translated from the Calabrian dialect into English. / PhD

LA COMUNICAZIONE IMPLICITA IN E.I. ZAMJATIN. UNA LETTURA PRAGMATICA DEI RACCONTI DI PIETROGRADO

BERTOLA, VALENTINA 23 March 2015 (has links)
The present work offers a linguistic analysis of implicitness in the stories "Drakon" [The Dragon], "Peščera" [The Cave] and "Mamaj", written by Yevgeny Zamyatin between 1918 and 1920 and known as his Petrograd cycle of stories. This topic is justified not only by the peculiarities of these texts, whose reference to post-revolutionary context and criticism of revolution are very clear but quite implicit, and the reader can only infer them from the text and the context he shares with the writer, but also by what Zamyatin stated in his essays on prose, where implicitness is one of the main instruments for achieving his idea of literary work as the result of the cooperation between author and reader. The analysis proceeds by applying the elements provided by the relevance theory which has been developed by Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson since the eighties, and particularly that of implicature and explicature; they are more fruitful than traditional rhetorical categories, which shed light on the way Zamyatin’s texts are built, but do not explain how the reader understands and interprets them, that is, how the creative cooperation pointed out in Zamyatin’s aesthetics takes place.
