Earth-observing satellite intercomparison using the Radiometric Calibration Test Site at Railroad Valley

This paper describes the current ground-based calibration results of Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI), Terra and Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Suomi National Polar orbiting Partnership Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), and Sentinel-2A Multispectral Instrument (MSI), using an automated suite of instruments located at Railroad Valley, Nevada, USA. The period of this study is 2012 to 2016 for MODIS, VIIRS, and ETM+, 2013 to 2016 for OLI, and 2015 to 2016 for MSI. The current results show that all sensors agree with the Radiometric Calibration Test Site (RadCaTS) to within +/- 5% in the solar-reflective regime, except for one band on VIIRS that is within +/- 6%. In the case of ETM+ and OLI, the agreement is within +/- 3%, and, in the case of MODIS, the agreement is within +/- 3.5%. MSI agrees with RadCaTS to within +/- 4.5% in all applicable bands. Use of First-Principle Numerical Models to Enhance the Understanding of the Operational Analysis of Space-Based Earth Radiation Budget Instruments

NASA's Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) program is a key component of the Earth Observing System (EOS). The CERES Proto-Flight Model (PFM) instrument is to be launched on NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) spacecraft in November, 1997. Each CERES instrument will contain three scanning thermistor bolometer radiometers to monitor the longwave, 5.0 to >100 microns, and shortwave, 0.3 to 5.0 microns, components of the Earth's radiative energy budget. High-level, first-principle dynamic electrothermal models of the CERES radiometric channels have been completed under NASA sponsorship. These first-principle models consist of optical, thermal and electrical modules. Optical characterization of the channels is ensured by Monte-Carlo-based ray-traces. Accurate thermal and electrical characterization is assured by transient finite-difference formulations. This body of research presents the evolution of these models by outlining their development and validation. Validation of the models is accomplished by simulating the ground calibration process of the actual instruments and verifying that the models accurately predict instrument performance. The result of this agreement is a high confidence in the model to predict other aspects of instrument performance. / Ph. D.

Analytical and Experimental Characterization of a Linear-Array Thermopile Scanning Radiometer for Geo-Synchronous Earth Radiation Budget Applications

The Thermal Radiation Group, a laboratory in the department of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, is currently working towards the development of a new technology for cavity-based radiometers. The radiometer consists of a 256-element linear-array thermopile detector mounted on the wall of a mirrored wedge-shaped cavity. The objective of this research is to provide analytical and experimental characterization of the proposed radiometer. A dynamic end-to-end opto-electrothermal model is developed to simulate the performance of the radiometer. Experimental results for prototype thermopile detectors are included. Also presented is the concept of the discrete Green's function to characterize the optical scattering of radiant energy in the cavity, along with a data-processing algorithm to correct for the scattering. Finally, a parametric study of the sensitivity of the discrete Green's function to uncertainties in the surface properties of the cavity is presented. / Master of Science

Preclassic Excavations at Punta de Chimino, Peten, Guatemala: Investigating Social Emplacement on an Early Maya Landscape

Two excavation seasons in Punta de Chimino's E-Group Acropolis provide a record of monument construction, refurbishment, desecration, and abandonment. This evidence is used to explore the material dimensions of social emplacement--any act, event, practice, or behavior that affects the way a community and its descendants relate to a particular locality over time. The attributes and treatment of monuments are taken to signify cultural and political dispositions. An extensive overview of Preclassic and Protoclassic Maya archaeology situates Punta de Chimino's monumental remains in different historical settings. Bayesian analysis of the stratified sequence of radiocarbon and luminescence dates is used to accurately pinpoint the timing of specific cultural events. Stratigraphy and radiometry allow refinement of the Punta de Chimino ceramic sequence. In the end, varied lines of material evidence are garnered to infer changing social orientations toward Punta de Chimino's ceremonial precinct and the ancient Mesoamerican world at large.
