An investigation into inconsistencies between theoretical predictions and microphone array measurements of railway rolling noise

Kitagawa, Toshiki January 2007 (has links)
Theoretical models, such as TWINS, and microphone array measurements have been widely used to gain better understanding of rolling noise. However, the array measurements are often inconsistent with the TWINS predictions and give less prominence to the rail than the theoretical models. The objectives of this thesis are to make validation work of the TWINS model for Japanese railway lines, and to explore the reason why the microphone array gives a correct estimate of sound power radiated by the rail. A comparison in terms of noise and rail vibration has been carried out for six wheel/rail conditions of Japanese railways. The TWINS predictions show good agreement with the measurements. After confirming the applicability of the TWINS model, the effects of wheel load on noise and rail vibration are investigated, and the predictions show similar trends to the measurements. The acoustic properties of a rail as measured with a microphone array have been investigated through simulations and field tests. In the simulation the rail is modelled as an array of multiple sources. Results are given for two situations: (a) the multiple sources are incoherent, which is assumed in determining sound power from a microphone array, (b) the sources are coherent, which is more representative of the rail radiation. It is found that the microphone array cannot detect a large part of the noise generated by the rail in the frequency range where free wave propagation occurs. Sound measurements were carried out to validate the radiation model of the rail by using a shaker excitation of a track. It is found that the noise is radiated from the rail at an angle to the normal when free wave propagation occurs in the rail, and that the predictions based on coherent sources show good agreement with the measurements. Sound measurements for a moving train were also performed with a microphone array. It is shown that the microphone array misses a large part of noise generated by the rail, when directed normal to the rail. This leads to an underestimation of the rail component of the noise in the array measurements.

Alves, Jussânia Ferreira January 2016 (has links)
When the railrold came to the state of Mato Grosso, a great expectation of economic development was expected, but it was demystified in this study in the cities of Alto Taquari, Alto Araguaia, Itiquira and Rondonópolis. Using the literature review the methodology and a survey of quantitative public data, it sets intermodal and rail privatization; the history that allowed the railroad in the state; the economic theory of development; public policy and granted tax relief; and development indicators. Data collection was carried out in government buildings: IBGE, SEFAZ/MT, MTE, MDIC and SEPLAN/MT (check list of acronyms). The analysis indicates that there was a significant positive impact on the economic growth of the cities of Alto Taquari and Alto Araguaia by the year 2010. But economic indicators suffered decrease after the extension of the railroad to the town of Itiquira and area, especially after the opening of the Intermodal Complex in Rondonópolis (CIR). Therefore, unstable performance of production generated (value added), along with the stagnation of improvement in stagnation of social indicators per capita income and unemployment, concludes that, so far, there was no sustainable economic development in these cities that were analyzed. The study also points to the need for studies and planning of public policies aimed at economic progress and advances in logistics infrastructure both in the region and the country.

It was applied experiments in railroad wheels, casting in steel, D-38 type (38- inches- diameter), produced by controlled pressure process. It was studied influence of the 15 factors (entrance variables) with objective to minimize or to eliminate a internal discontinuity, called microshrinkage, which was presented as constant output in all tried wheels, inside the rim wheels (region of contact with railroad tracks). The internal discontinuities had been detected by ultrasonic test, through the indirect method of evaluation, with aiding of AVG diagram, with the use of normal transducer. In function of the amount and different sizes of the internal discontinuities detected in all the tried wheels, a new method was created to measure them, establishing different answers, in such a way that make possible the factors influence analysis. For study and analysis of the factors and its interactions, the Taguchi approach was used, with L-16 Ortogonal Array. The process factors had operated in two levels with a signal-to-noise ratio called “bigger is better” function and it was used variance analysis by ANOVA to determine the main significance of the effects. The results had demonstrated that, the factors “relative position of the wheel in the production line” and “cure time of radial risers” had greater significance for the reduction of the discontinuity microshrinkage (output)
