Performance Management System Design and Implementation in Police Agencies: Is Following Recommended Practices Worth It?Pasha, Obed 09 July 2014 (has links)
As interest in and concerns about performance management systems continue to grow, scholars have increasingly suggested methods to better design and implement these systems in the public sector organizations, with the underlying assumption that they will help public organizations perform better. These suggestions include approaches to design and implement performance management activities, including target selection, indicator adoption, data collection and analysis, and reporting of results. These recommendations are available in the form of books and research articles that cover a wide variety of performance management systems and their respective usage settings. Scholars argue that by using their recommendations (termed as “recommended practices” from here onwards) in designing and implementing performance management systems, system designers and managers can improve organizational performance; a claim I intend to examine in this paper. There are scores of recommended practices spread out in the literature, which not only lack theoretical foundations, but also might be contradictory to each other.
The results from this study suggest do not suggest a link between the recommended practices and police performance, as only the practices of using performance information and providing discretion to officers were found to be supporting the hypotheses for only one out of the eight crime categories. These two significant results might be attributed to chance alone. The results, hence, raise questions about the effectiveness of the recommended practices in improving organizational performance. Justification of the use of recommended practices, however, can still be traced to goal-setting theory.

Therapeutic Recommendations for Emotional Eating: A Delphi StudyBailey, Meagan 11 June 2014 (has links)
Emotional eating is a common behavioral phenomenon that involves eating in response to emotional impulses rather than physical hunger and is believed to be a form of affect regulation (Ball and Lee, 2002). While emotional eating occurs within the symptomatology of eating disorders it also occurs independently (Benett, Greene, and Schwartz-Barcott, 2012). Further, a pattern of emotional eating can lead to weight gain and the development of eating disorders (Grant and Boersma, 2005). Currently, research is limited in terms of smart practice treatment recommendations for emotional eating. In order to address this gap in research, the Delphi method was utilized in order to gain consensus from a panel of nine experts regarding treatment recommendation specific to emotional eating. These panelists identified 47 treatment interventions that will be discussed. / Master of Science

A study of public procurements of food : The environmental impacts and how to reduce themKlockar, Zack, Kåhre Zäll, Olle, Lindahl, Emil January 2019 (has links)
There is a challenge to feed an increasing world population. Simultaneously, as more people rely on food production, ensuring a sustainable food production becomes more important. In two of the United Nations’ seventeen sustainable development goals food is mentioned, and one of the more specific targets regards making public procurements more sustainable. There are however challenges with regards to how to reduce a Swedish public procurement’s environmental impacts. This is due to some fundamental principles every Swedish public procurement must follow. This thesis examines the environmental impacts of two public procurements of food, regarding global warming, acidification and eutrophication. It also examines whether calculating food’s environmental impacts per serving or per kg is the more representative approach. Lastly, this thesis examines how the environmental impacts of a public procurements of food can be reduced. Consequently, a methodology of how to minimize the environmental impacts of a procurement is presented. Firstly, the results show that the environmental impacts per servings and per kg differ. One procurement has approximately 50-60% higher environmental impacts compared to the other when measured per serving, but approximately 2-9% lower impacts when measured per kg. The authors argue that representing the environmental impacts per serving is more accurate, since it is more correlated to nutritional values. Secondly, the results show that the environmental impacts for minimizing each environmental impact category differs.

Differentiating Between Premeditated And Impulsive Unethical Behavior: A Criminal Justice PerspectiveMai, Ke Michael January 2015 (has links)
A growing body of research has emerged in order to better understand unethical behavior at work. However, most theory and research has focused on identifying personal and situational characteristics that predict unethical behavior. However, in order to develop a more complete picture of the phenomenon, research also needs to examine the outcomes of unethical behavior at work. In this research, I adopt research and theory from criminal justice in order to better understand how employees react to unethical behavior at work. In particular, I differentiate between two types of unethical behavior, namely premeditated and impulsive unethical behavior. Based on the criminal justice literature, I define impulsive unethical behaviors as unethical actions where the thought to act did not arise prior to the immediate situation, whereas premeditated unethical behaviors represent unethical actions where the thought to act occurred prior to the immediate situation. I argue that premeditated acts will result in more severe reactions than acts that are impulsive in nature. Specifically, I sought to examine observers' perceived unethicality and recommended punishment towards the two types of unethical behavior. Integrating attribution theory, I also explored three dimensions of attributions (i.e., controllability, stability, and intentionality) as mediating mechanisms. Then, utilizing ethical dissonance theory as an explanatory framework, I examined both wrongdoers' and observers' history of engaging unethical acts as potential moderators of the mediated effects. Finally, methods were presented for two studies. The first study utilized a field sample of adult workers, and the second study utilized a sample of university students. Based on the results from the two studies, I found evidence that the type of unethical behavior that a wrongdoer engages in matters in terms of how they will be evaluated. I also found that observers see premeditated behavior as more intentional, which drives their evaluations. Finally, both observers' and wrongdoers' past history impact my hypothesized model at different points along the causal chain. I hope my results help instigate a shift in the behavioral ethics literature; one that begins to integrate research from the criminal justice literature and one that shifts focus away from examining every possible predictor of unethical behavior at work to what happens following the act itself.

Problém kyberšikany na základní škole (didakticko-metodické zpracování tématu mediální výchovy) / The problem of cyberbullying at basic schools (didactic and methodical elaboration of the topic of media education)SVOBODOVÁ, Eva January 2012 (has links)
This Diploma Thesis deals with the problem of cyberbullying at basic schools and its place in the lessons of media education. The theoretical part is divided into two parts. The first part handles with the specification of lessons of media education as they are defined in the ?RVP ZV?. It also mentions the recommended expected outputs which in the field of media education include also the problem of safe using of the internet and mobile phones at schools. The second part handles with cyberbullying considering its actuality and differences from the classic bullying. The methods of preventing and possible solutions are emphasized as well as the introduction of some stories from the reality. The practical part describes the circumstances of creating the lessons. This is followed by the description of six linked lessons and the evaluation of the process of the education. The evaluation is based on the feed-back from the students and their suggestions. The aim of my Diploma Thesis is to show a possible way of the realisation of lessons including the problem of cyberbullying in the lessons of media education. I also wanted to refer to the importance of bringing this problem to basic schools.

Snížení bolestivosti vybraných diagnostických a ošetřovatelských výkonů v péči o novorozence na základě doporučených postupů / Reduction of pain in selected diagnostic and nursing performances based on best practices in the care of the newbornsBÍLKOVÁ, Simona January 2014 (has links)
This thesis deals with neonatal pain and possibility of its reduction during three most painful interventions, to which newborns are exposed. The interventions were selected based on the study of literature, among them belongs collection of capillary blood for screening of newborns, insertion and removal of a gastric tube and airway suctioning of the newborn. Pain has protective reasons as it shall protect us from harming tissues. But sometimes it is necessary to cause pain for the purpose of performing a diagnostic or medical treatment. But there are some ways how to reduce pain at newborns. The theoretical part describes the basic facts about pain, its origin and transfer, importance and types of pain. This thesis also describes the specifics of fetus nervous system maturation during pregnancy. Furthermore, it mentions evaluation of pain manifestation and ways of treating it. Another sub-chapter contains a description of selected medical treatments and ways of palliating pain during their implementation. The last section is dedicated to clinical recommended procedures. The practical part of the work was carried out in four neonatal intensive care units. There were intentionally selected three respondents in each unit, with whom were led guided interviews which are recorded in chapter 4.2. Results of interviews with each respondent are summarized in transparent tables. This thesis had three objectives. The first objective was to compare the method of implementation of selected painful procedures at newborns in theory and practice. We wanted to know whether nursing procedures carried out in selected neonatal units correspond with procedures described in literature. By questioning and observation was found out that some respondents did not follow recommendations. The differences are described in chapter "Results and discussion". The second objective was to determine whether nurses at selected wards have selected performance standards and whether they are also interested in latest procedures of palliating pain at newborns. All respondents stated that performance standards are selected, but not all are prescribed only for newborns. Almost all respondents (except one) have stated that they were interested in new ways of reducing pain, but not all methods are listed in the standards. The third objective was to determine whether nurses abide selected nursing care standards and whether they employ their most recent knowledge about neonatal pain reduction in practice. By observiation was not found non-observance of standards, but also was not found implementation of new procedure knowledge that respondents stated in an interview. At the same time the respondents (except two) reported that there was no need to change the standards at selected performances. The outcome of this work is a new standard for each performance which was dealt with in this thesis. Standards were created eventhough the respondents stated that there was no need to change them. It is necessary to verify new standards in practice.
