Energy Recovery Ventilator Membrane Efficiency TestingRees, Jennifer Anne 03 October 2013 (has links)
A test setup was designed and built to test energy recovery ventilator membranes. The purpose of this test setup was to measure the heat transfer and water vapor transfer rates through energy recover ventilator membranes and find their effectiveness, with air conditions that resemble residential use. Two test chambers were constructed with different channel heights above the membrane; one was 1mm and the other 2mm. The 2mm setup gave measureable results, but small air leaks in the system of 7.0% and 6.2% left room for error. The 1mm setup also had air leaks but they were smaller than the 2mm setup, with leak rates of 1.0% and 5.1%. The permeance of the membrane was found to be 2.58x10^-5 g/(m2*s*Pa) for the 2mm test chamber and 9.90x10^-54 g/(m2*s*Pa) for the 1mm test chamber.

The im/possibility of recovery in Native North American literaturesVan Styvendale, Nancy 06 1900 (has links)
Recovery is a ubiquitous theme in Native North American literature, as well as a repeated topic in the criticism on this literature, but the particulars of its meaning, mechanics, and ideological implications have yet to be explored by critics in any detail. Other than natural/ized telos, what precisely is recovery as it is constructed in Native literature? How might we describe the recovered subject(s) of this literature? To what ends is recovery, as both literary genre and discourse of Native identity, enacted and re-enacted? The Im/possibility of Recovery in Native North American Literatures explores classic and counter recovery narratives, a genre the study coins, and highlights how recovery, defined as homecoming by the genre, is characteristically im/possible. Providing in depth readings of four representative recovery narratives, Jeannette Armstrongs Slash, Sherman Alexies Indian Killer, Tomson Highways Kiss of the Fur Queen, and Joseph Boydens Three Day Road, as well as an overall survey of the recovery narrative tradition, Im/possibility argues that recovery is re-formulated through its melancholic introjection of those for whom recovery is impossible. The study is divided into four main sections: the first explores the historical production of recovery as literary tradition in the late 1960s and 70s in the wake of termination and relocation policies in Canada and the United States. The second section brings together trauma theory rooted in Holocaust Studies with indigenous literary articulations of the trauma of displacement to argue that recovery narratives craft a distinctly Native North American understanding of trauma as trans/historical. The third section turns to the question of agency, re-evaluating the subversive potential of colonial discourses of subjection. Rather than continuing to perceive such discourses as repressive of authentic Native identities, Im/possibility uses poststructuralist analyses of subject formation to focus on the productive aspects of subjectification. The final section fleshes out recoverys mechanics, the way recovery works--that is, both operates and succeeds--returning via a psychoanalytic analysis of discourse to theorize its melancholic composition. / English

Two Essays in Asset-PricingPetkevich, Alexey 2011 August 1900 (has links)
Past research documents a positive link between momentum and firm-level default risk, yet this anomaly is not connected to default risk at the macro level. Namely,
there is no documented momentum during recessions, when default is higher on average. In the first essay, "Momentum and Aggregate Default Risk," we attempt to
resolve this puzzle by analyzing momentum pro ts over time, conditional on both business cycles and unexpected changes in aggregate default risk. First, we show that
momentum is driven by shocks to aggregate default, rather than general economic conditions such as expansions and recessions. Using the Fama and MacBeth procedure,
we find that a conditional default shock factor is priced and can explain a large portion of the total momentum returns. Second, we provide a risk-based explanation
for this anomaly by linking the returns of momentum portfolios to shareholder recovery during financial distress. We find that losers have higher recovery (i.e.,
shareholders have high bargaining power) on average, and, as a result, have relatively lower risk in high default states of the world. Therefore, loser stocks have a
lower risk premium and lower expected returns in worsening aggregate default conditions, leading to the observed momentum. This effect is more pronounced among
stocks of firms with low credit ratings. Our results help to reconcile the seemingly contradictory evidence documented by previous studies and o er a rational explanation for the momentum anomaly.
In the second essay, "Sources of Momentum in Bonds," we study the relationship between momentum in bond returns and aggregate default. We document that momentum in corporate bonds occurs mainly during periods of high default shocks and is driven by losers. Supporting this result, we find that conditional default risk is priced in the cross-section of corporate bond portfolios. Motivated by these findings, we develop a theoretical model connecting bond momentum returns to the ability
of bondholders to recover value in financial distress. Specifically, we find that losers have relatively higher recovery potential and, therefore, become less risky when high default shocks occur. Thus, losers have lower expected returns in high default shocks, leading to the observed conditional momentum. Further, US government bonds, with default risk approaching zero, feature no momentum, however this anomaly prevails in sovereign bonds with positive default risk, consistent with our main results.

The experiments reported in the present thesis examined the behavioural processes of Pavlovian fear extinction and latent inhibition. The first series of experiments studied the reacquisition of extinguished fear responses following different amounts of extinction training. Rapid reacquisition occurred when rats were reconditioned after moderate extinction, showing that the original learning remained intact across this extinction. In contrast, when reconditioning was given after massive extinction, reconditioned responding was first depressed but then spontaneously recovered over time. This suggests that massive extinction produces a relatively permanent loss of the originally learned responding, while additionally imposes on the extinguished CS a transient latent inhibitory process that prevented the immediate but not the delayed expression of reconditioning. The second series of experiments studied the impact of spontaneous recovery of extinguished fear responses on their additional extinction. These experiments demonstrated that a CS that had time to show spontaneous recovery underwent greater response loss across additional extinction than one lacking recovery. They also showed that an excitor extinguished in compound with a CS showing recovery suffered greater response loss than an excitor extinguished in compound with a CS lacking recovery. Further, extinction of a compound composed of two CSs, one showing recovery and a second lacking recovery, produced greater extinction to the CS that showed recovery. These results show that spontaneous recovery of extinguished responses deepens their extinction through an error-correction mechanism regulated by both common and individual error terms. The third series of experiments studied the spontaneous recovery of latently inhibited and extinguished fear responses in within-subject designs. Using a compound test procedure, a CS that had received extensive preexposure or extensive extinction was found to have undergone greater spontaneous recovery relative to a CS just moderately preexposed or moderately extinguished. A CS given a mixed history of preexposure and extinction also underwent greater recovery relative to a CS just preexposed or just extinguished. These results suggest that both latent inhibition and extinction share a transient depressive process, and that the resulting recovery of responding is proportional to the amount of this depression.
