iv It is widely known that Turkey has a great amount of data of traditions and cultures on its broad land. By the effects of different dynamics in the 20th century, many craftsmanship and mastery as parts of traditional culture have been transforming day by day. Throughout that transformation period, some traditional craft products could find alternative methods to survive although some others did not. Craft products have been searched by social anthropology since they are members of material culture of humankind for a long time. It can be said that most contemporary objects are transformed versions of older ones in the history. However, all the products today are continuously transforming by the effects of different factors. There still are craft objects and craftsmanship in the market. Traditional craft products, in Turkey, have been transforming by the effects of technology, change in social conditions and marketing issues and designer&rsquo / s initiative as well. Industrialization directly has effected craft production to weaken but some alternative methods are found to provide revival of these professions and objects. This study examined transformation in craft objects focusing on the existing scene of traditional products in Turkish market. Data about craft culture is collected through observations and interviews with craftsmen considering existing craft products in the market. Examples of craft objects and objects designed by getting inspired from craft culture are classified in the chart constituting a schema for the methods for transformation of craft objects. Dynamic factors affecting the transformation process of craft objects are discussed. The need for the revival of traditional culture via design and reasons to do so are explained. In the thesis, it is claimed that one of the agents of traditional product&rsquo / s transformation is the designer&rsquo / s attitude. Designer can determine the method for the transformation of traditional products. So, for the revival of craft culture in the next generations, the essence of traditional culture behind the traditional products can be re-used in industrial design. While searching for the convenient methods of transformation of traditional products, designers&rsquo / opinions about craft culture and reusing information of culture and tradition in design are searched through a questionnaire. Possible methods for the revival of craft culture through design are examined.

REDESIGNING AGNOECOSYSTEMS FOR A SUSTAINABLE CROP PRODUCTION INTENSIFICATION

L’intensificazione sostenibile delle pratiche agricole rappresenta un paradigma per il passaggio da sistemi agricoli tradizionali all’applicazione di tecnologie e tecniche moderne per la produzione agricola. A livello globale si è diffuso l’interesse verso il modello di Agricoltura Sostenibile (AS), in vista di alcuni problemi che possono minacciare la sicurezza alimentare mondiale: crescita della popolazione mondiale, cambiamenti nella domanda delle produzioni agricole, percentuale elevata di persone sottonutrite, cambiamenti climatici, diminuzione delle risorse naturali. Il progetto “Produzione di cibo appropriato: sufficiente, sicuro, sostenibile”, ancora in corso, lavora per raggiungere alcuni scopi: (1) rilevare e valutare la disponibilità quantitativa e qualitativa degli alimenti destinati al consumo umano, (2) proporre nuovi sistemi di produzione agro-zootecnica, (3) sviluppare tecniche appropriate per processare e conservare gli alimenti, al fine di ottenere uno stato di sicurezza alimentare e sostenibilità ambientale ed economica. L’obiettivo generale di questo lavoro è quello di mostrare quali sono le possibili alternative ai sistemi agricoli tradizionali, sia nei Paesi Sviluppati sia in quelli in Via di Sviluppo, al fine di aumentarne l’efficienza e diminuirne gli impatti sull’ambiente, aumentando lo stato globale di sicurezza alimentare. Per i Paesi in Via di Sviluppo l’attenzione si concentra sulle pratiche di sviluppo rurale integrato, al fine di implementare quantitativamente la produzione alimentare e, conseguentemente, la sicurezza alimentare, preservando nel contempo l'ambiente. Per i Paesi Sviluppati, in cui i rendimenti agricoli sono già potenzialmente molto elevati, l’attenzione viene focalizzata sul migliorare la produttività del suolo, riducendo gli input esterni e le emissioni di gas ad effetto serra, attraverso l’adozione di sistemi agricoli conservativi. / Sustainable intensification of agricultural practices represents a paradigm shift from traditional farming systems to the application of modern technologies and techniques to crop production. At global level it has been widespread interest towards Sustainable Agriculture (SA) model, in view of some issues that will may threaten the world food security: growing world population, changes in agricultural product’s demand, high prevalence of undernourishment, climate changes, decreasing of natural resources. The project “Production of proper food: sufficient, safe, sustainable" is still working to achieve some purposes: (1) to detect the availability quantity and quality of food for human consumption, (2) to propose new agro-livestock production systems, (3) to develop appropriate techniques for processing and storage of foodstuffs, in order to achieve food security, environmental and economic sustainability. The objective of this work is to show what are the possible alternatives ways at traditional agricultural systems, both in Developed and Developing Countries, in order to increase the efficiency and to decrease the impacts on the environment, raising a global condition of food security. For Developing Countries the attention is focused on integrated rural development practices in order to implement food production and the state of food security, while preserving the environment. For Developed Countries, in which yields are already potentially higher, the attention is focused on enhance soil productivity while reducing external farming input and greenhouse gases emission by the adoption of conservation agricultural systems.

Critical success factor for the implementation of information system in an organisation : CASE OF WARTSILA

Information system projects are gaining immense popularity among the manufacturing organisations across the globe. Due to the challenges associated with the information system project management with the manufacturing organisation, organisations have started focusing on technology-oriented solutions such as Information system (IS) projects. However, the success or failure of these projects is ultimately dependent on a range of critical success factors. The purpose of the research was to investigate the Critical Success Factors (CSF) in an Information System (IS) project using the case of Wartsila, a manufacturing organisation operating in marine and energy sector. For this purpose, a qualitative research method was adopted with semi-structured interviews carried out with the IT manager, the Integration Manager (Int. M), and the project teams involved in the project. Thematic analysis, which was chosen as the appropriate data analysis method, assisted in the identification of several codes that were categorized and finally guided to the extraction of seven (7) key themes. A conceptual framework was drawn from the secondary literature review containing CSF within the two major categories such as subjective and objective CSFs. The set of subjective CSFs included project management and team member, commitment and management support, training, change management perceptions, communication, and project planning and management. On the other side, the set of objective CSFs included the process of redesigning, technological difficulties in system design, costs, time engineering, and quality.   These literature-based factors were simultaneously analysed by the responses of the interviewees, ultimately ending up in the development of a modified and comprehensive framework for the manufacturing organisation. The findings revealed the significance of subjective factor in shaping the accomplishment of objective factors, drive the project towards the success. These findings have further recommended the need for culturally sensitive ‘training’ and integration of formal and informal ‘communication’ methods for the success of the projects in the manufacturing organisations.

An Evaluation of a Redesigned Developmental Mathematics Course at a Hawaii Community College

Developmental mathematics is a problem for many college students due to high failure rate. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the redesigned course, Math 24. The evaluation examined success, retention, and persistence outcomes of the redesigned course compared to the previous developmental math course. The course's academic and environmental strengths and weaknesses were assessed from the students' and instructors' perspectives. The study utilized the theoretical and conceptual frameworks of Tinto's retention model, Astin's I-E-O model, and Wlodkowski's culturally responsive teaching. A mixed methods program evaluation was employed for the case study using an ex post facto analysis of quantitative data from the college's student database and interviews from 16 students, 4 faculty members, and 1 program director administrator. Quantitative data on persistence, retention and student success rates were analyzed using descriptive statistics to evaluate the outcomes of the redesigned course. Qualitative data from student focus groups and faculty interviews were analyzed using constant comparison analysis to evaluate redesign effect on students. The findings suggested that the redesigned math course's curriculum, resources, assignments, assessments, and the physical classroom setting had many advantages, and assignments and assessments posed major challenges. Online resources, peer collaboration, indirect instruction were strengths; word problems, and the final exam posed the biggest challenges for most students. Retention, persistence and success rates fluctuated over the years and the expected outcomes were not achieved. The social change implication of the redesigned developmental math project study is that faculty should seek students' feedback to help faculty with effective decision making.

REVITALIZACE ÚZEMÍ BÝVALÉ ČKD V PRAZE, VYSOČANECH / REVITALIZATION OF THE TERRITORY OF THE ČKD IN PRAGUE, VYSOČANY

There is a large number of localities in Prague that have lost their industrial glory or transport signifi cance. Today, these areas remain unused and turn into neglected scars on the city´s face. 1466 hectares of such territories exist now in Prague. Their transformation and limitation of the city´s expansion is one of the main goals of the new Prague´s Metropolitan Plan. And the solution to the transformation of the former ČKD is the subject of this thesis. Conditions for the revitalization of the territory of the former ČKD are embedded in the zoning plan for the Prague´s district Vysočany, in the new Metropolitan Plan and the new development projects in surrounding play its role too. The aim of the chapter is to evaluate the existing land situation, its use with respect to the new Metropolitan Plan and conceptual renewal of the postindustrial territory of Vysočany district. The thesis presents a possible example of the creation of a new urban district, which offers housing, modern offices, sports and all amenities. Modern architecture of high-rise buildings is complemented by quality solutions of public spaces, green streets and parks.
