Investigating pluralistic data architectures in data warehousing

Oladele, Kazeem Ayinde January 2015 (has links)
Understanding and managing change is a strategic objective for many organisations to successfully compete in a market place; as a result, organisations are leveraging their data asset and implementing data warehouses to gain business intelligence necessary to improve their businesses. Data warehouses are expensive initiatives, one-half to two-thirds of most data warehousing efforts end in failure. In the absence of well-formalised design methodology in the industry and in the context of the debate on data architecture in data warehousing, this thesis examines why multidimensional and relational data models define the data architecture landscape in the industry. The study develops a number of propositions from the literature and empirical data to understand the factors impacting the choice of logical data model in data warehousing. Using a comparative case study method as the mean of collecting empirical data from the case organisations, the research proposes a conceptual model for logical data model adoption. The model provides a framework that guides decision making for adopting a logical data model for a data warehouse. The research conceptual model identifies the characteristics of business requirements and decision pathways for multidimensional and relational data warehouses. The conceptual model adds value by identifying the business requirements which a multidimensional and relational logical data model is empirically applicable.

Development Of A Gis-based Monitoring And Management System For Underground Mining Safety

Salap, Seda 01 September 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Mine safety is of paramount concern to the mining industry. The generation of a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) which can administrate relevant spatial data and metadata of underground mining safety efficiently is a very vital issue in this sense. In an effort to achieve a balance of safety and productivity, GIS can contribute to the creation of a safe working environment in underground (U/G) mining. Such a system should serve to a continuous risk analysis and be designed for applications in case of emergency. Concept for safety should require three fundamental components, namely (i) constructive safety / (ii) surveillance and maintenance / and (iii) emergency. The implementation has to be carried out in a Web-Based Geographic Information System. The process comprises first the safety concept as the application domain model and then a conceptual model was generated in terms of Entity- Relationship Diagrams. After the implementation of the logical model a user interface was developed and GIS was tested. Finally, one should deal with the question if it is possible to extend the method of resolution used to a national GIS infrastructure.

Integracija šema modula baze podataka informacionog sistema / Integration of Information System Database Module Schemas

Paralelan i nezavisan rad više projektanata na različitim modulima (podsistemima) nekog informacionog sistema, identifikovanim saglasno početnoj funkcionalnoj dekompoziciji realnog sistema, nužno dovodi do međusobno nekonzistentnih rešenja šema modula baze podataka. The thesis considers the problems concerning automatic detection of collisions, that can appear during the simultaneous design of different db module schemas, and integration of db module schemas into the unique information system db schema.

All possible types of db module schema collisions have been identified. Necessary and sufficient condition of strong and intensional db module schema compatibility has been formu-lated and proved. It has enabled to formalize the process of db module schema strong and intensional compatibility checking and to construct the appropriate algorithms. The integration process of the unique (strong covering) db schema, on the basis of compatible db module schemas, is formalized, as well. The methodology of applying the algorithms for compatibility checking and unique db schema integration is also presented.

Databáze pohybujících se objektů / The Database of Moving Objects

Vališ, Jaroslav January 2008 (has links)
This work treats the representation of moving objects and operations over these objects. Introduces the support for spatio-temporal data in Oracle Database 10g and presents two designs of moving objects database structure. Upon these designs a database was implemented using the user-defined data types. Sample application provides a graphical output of stored spatial data and allows us to call an implemented spatio-temporal operations. Finally, an evaluation of achieved results is done and possible extensions of project are discussed.

Représentation de trajectoires spatiotemporelles dans un système d’information géographique : le cas des activités d’observation de mammifères marins dans le Parc marin du Saguenay – Saint-Laurent

Jeanneret-Grosjean, Cédric 04 1900 (has links)
The considerable volume of commercial boat trips associated with whale-watching activities (WWAs) in the Saguenay-Saint-Laurent National Marine Park (PMSSL) may have negative impacts on the health of the whales visiting the Saint-Lawrence River estuary. This situation has led park officials to seek an appropriate information management system in order to better monitor WWAs. This paper contributes to the design of such a tool by modeling excursion patterns of WWAs, resulting in a database. Based on the space-time path concept used for the study of activity-based travel behavior as well as the mobile-object geomatical concept, our data-model enables us to plot the trajectories of the excursions and the sequence of activities taking place during those excursions. The model is object-oriented and built into a Geodatabase (an ArcGis-processable relational database). The objects in the database are based on data collected by the Marine Mammal Research and Education Group (GREMM) during a three-year WWA monitoring program. Finally, this report demonstrates that geographic information systems can be effectively used to process the database in a way that serves the needs of park officials, and that the representation of excursion data in a GIS opens up new avenues for research on the space-time pattern of observation activities and the travel behavior of boats.
