Model based approach to resistive wall magnetohydrodynamic instability control : Experimental modeling and optimal control for the reversed-field pinchSetiadi, Agung Chris January 2016 (has links)
The primary objective of fusion research is to realize a thermonuclear fusion power plant. The main method to confine the hot plasma is by using a magnetic field. The reversed-field pinch is a type of magnetic confinement device which suffers from variety of magnetohy- drodynamic (MHD) instabilities. A particular unstable mode that is treated in this work is the resistive wall mode (RWM), which occurs due to the current gradient in the RFP and has growth rates of the order of the magnetic diffusion time of the wall. Application of control engineering tools appears to allow a robust and stable RFP operation.A model-based approach to stabilize the RWMs is pursued in this thesis. The approach consists of empirical modeling of RWMs using a class of subspace identification methodology. The obtained model is then used as a basis for a model based controller. In particular the first experimental results of using a predictive control for RWM stabilization are obtained. It is shown that the formulation of the model based controller allows the user to incorporate several physics relevant phenomena along with the stabilization of RWM. Another use of the model is shown to estimate and compensate the inherent error field. The results are encouraging, and the methods appear to be generically useful as research tools in controlled magnetic confinement fusion. / Fusionsforskningens primära mål är att förverkliga en ny typ av kraftverk baserade på termonukleär fusion. Den viktigaste metoden för att innesluta det heta plasmat är användandet av magnetfält. ”Reverserat-fält pinch” (RFP) är en typ av anläggning för magnetisk inneslutning av fusionsplasma som uppvisar ett flertal magneto-hydrodynamiska instabiliteter. En specifik instabil mod som behandlas i detta arbete är”resistiv-vägg” moden (RWM). Den orsakas av strömgradienten i RFPn och tillväxer med en tidskonstant som är av samma storleksordning som magnetfältets diffusionstid i det omgivande metallskalet. Tillämpning av verktyg från reglerteknikområdet förefaller tillåta en robust och stabil RFP drift. I detta arbete används ett modell-baserat tillvägagångssätt för kompensering av RWM. Det innefattar empirisk modellering av RWM med användning av ”subspace” system-identifieringsmetoder. Den erhållna modellen används sedan som grund för en modell-baserad regulator. De första experimentella resultaten från modell-prediktiv kompensering av RWM har erhållits. I detta arbete har också visats att formuleringen av den modellbaserade regulatorn tillåter användaren att integrera flera relevanta fysikaliska aspekter förutom RWM. Ytterligare en användning av modellen är för att göra uppskattning och kompensering av avvikelser i anläggningens magnetfält, så kallade fält-fel. Nations at War: How External Threat Affects Ethnic PoliticsPace, Christopher Earl 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation explores the how external threat from militarized interstate disputes and interstate rivalries affect the relationship between the state and the ethnic groups within its borders. Specifically, it finds that national identity, the preservation of ethnic regional autonomy, and the formation of ethnic-based militias are all influenced by states involvement in international conflicts. In Sub Saharan Africa, discriminated groups are less likely to identify with their national identity and when the state is involved in an interstate dispute, while the rest of the country increases their likelihood to identify with the nation, discriminated groups cling to their ethnic identity. During and interstate rivalry, ethnic groups face a heightened risk of the state taking away their autonomy over a region. If the rivalry becomes too intense or the ethnic group shares kin with the rival, the ethnic group has lower chance of losing their autonomy during rivalry. Finally, ethnic minority seeking to form a militia are able to form one faster if their ethnic group is well represented in the military's rank and file or if their co-ethnics in the rank and file had combat experience in an interstate dispute were military force was used. Ethnic groups that are well represented in officer corps are less likely to have organizations with militias especially if those officers have combat experience. Using a logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard models I find a strong link between interstate conflict and ethnic politics.

Studies on the behaviour of polystyrene in reversed phase chromatography.Shalliker, Ross Andrew, mikewood@deakin.edu.au January 1992 (has links)
Polystyrene behaviour in reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography was influenced mainly by the solvent system, but secondary affects were observed depending on the stationary phase. A variety of reversed phase columns were investigated using mobile phase combinations of dichlorom ethane-methanol, dichloromethane-acetonitrile, ethyl acetate-methanol and ethyl acetate-acetonitrile. Several different modes of behaviour were observed depending on the polymer solubility in the solvent system.
In the dichloromethane-methanol solvent system, polymer-stationary phase interactions only occurred when the molecules had pore access. Retention of excluded polystyrene depended on the kinetics of precipitation and redissolution of the polymer. Peak splitting and band broadening occurred when the kinetics were slow and molecular weight separations were limited !o oligomers and polystyrenes lower than 5-10(4) dalton.
Excellent molecular weight separations of polystyrenes were obtained using gradient elution reversed phase chromatography with a dichloromethane-acetonitrile mobile phase on C18 columns. The retention was based on polymer-stationary phase interactions regardless of the column pore size. Separations were obtained on large diameter pellicular adsorbents that were almost as good as those obtained on porous adsorbents, showing that pore access was not essential for the retention of high molecular weight polystyrenes. In the best example, the separation ranged from the monomer to 10(6) dalton in a single analysis. Very little adsorption of excluded polymers was observed on C8 or phenyl columns.
Polystyrene molecular weight separations to 7-10(5) dalton were obtained in an ethyl acetate-acetonitrile solvent system on C18 columns. Adsorption was responsible for retention. When an ethyl acetate-methanol solvent system was used, no molecular weight separations were obtained because of complex peak splitting.
Reversed phase chromatography was compared to size exclusion chromatography for the analysis of polydisperse polystyrenes. Similar results were obtained using both methods. However, the reversed phase method was less sensitive to concentration effects and gave better resolution.
