"Quelling uprisings" : respectable bodies and the politics of cleaning / Respectable bodies and the politics of cleaning

Bloom, Aretousa Alkmini 07 June 2012 (has links)
This research examines the ways in which dominant boundaries and identities are (re)defined at the intersection of class, gender, race and nation in the context of the 'cleanups' that took place in the aftermath of the London riots in August 2011. Through a semiotic and discursive analysis of media photographs of the Hackney and Battersea cleanups, I explore how some bodies are allowed to belong in space while others are made 'out of place'. In reading the photographs as a text, I pay particular attention to the performativity of the cleaning body and its relationship with brooms, gloves and other technologies of cleaning. Influenced by Anne McClintock's (1995) analysis of 19th Century cleaning in Imperial Leather, I explore the contemporary relevance of her work in 21st Century London and in the context of gentrification. I also use Sara Ahmed's (2004) work on the politics of emotions to explore the way in which fear and love allow bodies to cohere in opposition to the perceived threat of undesirable 'others'. / text

The may thirtieth incident in shanghai : Wu-sa shih-chien

Ward, Robert Donald January 1971 (has links)
On May Thirtieth 1925 in Shanghai, a group of Municipal police officers under the command of a British Inspector fired upon a crowd of Chinese students and pedestrians killing twelve and wounding numerous others. This thesis is an examination of the May Thirtieth Incident; but it is also an examination of the background to the Incident and its resulting aftermath. Foreign interest and action in China played an important role in the background to the May Thirtieth Incident as did nationalist and anti-foreign propaganda and agitation. It was, however, domestic issues and events in Shanghai that led directly to the student demonstrations on May 30th. Once the Incident occurred, nationalist and anti-foreign sentiments again became quite important as did the role and influence of the CCP. There ensued in Shanghai and other centers further agitation, strikes, and general boycotts against foreign interests in China. / Arts, Faculty of / History, Department of / Graduate

Bolin, Isabelle January 2014 (has links)

Social Media as an Outlet for Community Response and Dialogue Following the 2011 Vancouver Stanley Cup Riot

Lindsay, Eathan January 2014 (has links)
The 2011 Vancouver Stanley Cup riot (VSCR)—one of the most significant sports-related public disorder events to occur in Vancouver in recent decades—was the first sporting riot in North America that was characterised by the use of social media (McCann, 2011). Given this significant influence, this research uses qualitative content analysis to explore how persons posting on Facebook pages dedicated to the VSCR in the six months following constructed the meaning of the event and its participants. Using the insights of social identity theory, the findings suggest that online discussions of this event centred on an understanding of communities and community membership which was reflected in individuals’ attempts to reassert specific community identities as “law abiding” and “peaceful”, primarily accomplished through the identification, othering, and derogation of riot participants. The findings further suggest that the VSCR was constructed as damaging to the reputations of particular communities and their members resulting in the need for community repair, while its participants were constructed as deviant and threatening “others” who were deserving of punishment, vengeful conduct, and strict police treatment.

Structuralist and interactionist perspectives of collective behavior and control of crowds.

Gunes, Ismail Dincer 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to understand the concept of collective behavior from different theoretical perspectives and the policy implications they imply for the Turkish Riot Police Units. The civil disturbances in the 1960s have clearly illustrated range of problems in the domain of crowd control. This work will start with the general characteristics and the classification of collective behavior. Second, two main perspectives on collective behavior, which are the structuralist and the interactionist perspectives, will be examined respectively. The question will be asked whether these two perspectives efficiently and effectively explain the crowds and the crowd control. Finally, the other factors in crowd control will be explored, and recommendations concerning the handling of crowds in a more peaceful manner will be made.
