The Role of Habitat in Crocodilian Communication

Dinets, Vladimir 12 April 2011 (has links)
Crocodilians (crocodiles, alligators, caimans and gharials) have a particular category of signals used for long-distance communication of location and status. These signals are composed of acoustic and non-acoustic components with different physical properties, such as vocal sounds, slaps, infrasound, odor and postures. A survey of extant species and a comparative study of allopatric conspecific populations inhabiting different habitats show that the composition of these signals is adjusted to optimize their ability to carry information in each habitat. Studies of animals living in changing habitats and of animals inhabiting different habitats within the same geographical areas show that these adaptations are evolved differences between populations and species rather than a result of behavioral adjustments by individual animals in response to habitat structure. Details of adjustment process help elucidate information about the functions of each signal component. Experimental data obtained in the course of the study show that crocodilians have the ability to locate the sound underwater. In addition, novel information on signaling by almost all extant crocodilian species is provided. This information gives important new evidence for solving the long-standing controversy of crocodilian systematic, showing that false gharials are aberrant crocodiles rather than members of the gharial lineage. It also sheds some light on the evolution of crocodilian signaling, allowing to plot the events of signal evolution on the phylogenetic tree, and explaining the puzzling absence of small species among extant crocodilians.

Anthony Newley: An Actor's Analysis Of A Musical Theatre Legacy

Layton, Christopher 01 January 2006 (has links)
Letters of Life, Lust, and Love: The Music of Anthony Newley will be focused entirely on the writing, performance, and private life of Anthony Newley. The show's book will connect each of the musical numbers through a series of letters written to his mother, Frances "Gracie" Newley. This will serve as the dramatic through-line correlating both his professional and private lives. The actor in this piece will be performing as "Mr. Newley," and will intensely focus on his mannerisms and personality. Costume and make-up will also be used to augment his physicality. The actor will be accompanied by a pianist. Newley's unusual and innovative writing and performance abilities are often ones that are underestimated due to a smaller body of work. Further study would reveal the autobiographical inspiration behind his unique librettos, mastery of performance, and scope of abilities extending into both commercial and artistic areas of theatre. The writing is filled with social and economic issues, religious references, and metaphorical concepts inviting audiences to think. These productions were holding their own during the period of Styne, Bernstein, and the beginnings of Sondheim. Before and after the performance, observers will have a chance to peruse through a display consisting of posters, articles, photos, and other Newley memorabilia to supplement further understanding of the subject. Observers will leave with a fresh (if not entirely new) idea of the experiences that drove this remarkably talented showman to contributing his part in the American musical theatre spotlight.

Analýza pro vytvoření institucionálního repozitáře na České zemědělské univerzitě v Praze / Analysis for the building of the institutional repository for the Czech University of Life Science in Prague

Bláha, Dominik January 2017 (has links)
The goal of the diploma thesis is to put forward a procedure for implementation of an institutional repository at the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague with the aid of an analysis on the current situation of institutional repositories in Czechia. The analysed repositories are selected using OpenDOAR and ROAR registries. The first part of the thesis describes the software used to implement the institutional repositories in Czechia. In the next part tools, standards and certifications relevant for trustworthy institutional repositories such as DRAMBORA and PLATTER, standards ISO 16363 and ISO 14721 and the so called lesser certifications Data Seal of Approval and Nestor Seal of Trustworthy Digital Archives are described. Following part focuses on policies and operation of those analysed repositories. The last part of the thesis deals with a description of current practice on the Czech University of Life Sciences, the conducted quantitative analysis among the researchers of the university and the aforementioned procedure for implementation of an institutional repository using the tool PLATTER. The conclusion summarizes the issues of institutional repositories in Czechia.
