The role of tidal mixing in Rupert and Holberg Inlets

Drinkwater, Kenneth Francis January 1973 (has links)
Analysis of monthly observations of temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen content in the basin formed by Rupert and Holberg Inlets reveals a greater degree of mixing than that found in most British Columbia Inlets. Although relatively uniform water properties are constantly found, there are large monthly variations of the actual values. The water temperature correlates with the solar radiation while the salinity changes follow the river runoff which is in turn controlled by precipitation. The variation in dissolved oxygen content appears due to a combination of biological influences and influx of Pacific Oceanic water. A model has been developed which ascribes the monthly fluctuations and vertical homogeneity to an accumulation of irregular mixing events associated with the tidal flow through Quatsino Narrows, a shallow connecting channel. Thermal microstructure measurements disclose a region of deep turbulent mixing near the narrows and provide evidence of an up-inlet flow beneath the thermocline in Rupert and Holberg Inlets. / Science, Faculty of / Physics and Astronomy, Department of / Graduate

Submarine channel formation and acoustic remote sensing of suspended sediments and turbidity currents in Rupert Inlet, B.C.

Hay, Alexander Edward January 1981 (has links)
Turbidity currents, both continuous flow and surge-type, have been detected with acoustic sounders operating at 42.5, 107 and 200, kHz. The turbidity currents are associated with the discharge of mine tailing into Rupert Inlet. A linear relation is obtained between the backscattered acoustic signal at 200 kHz and the one-half power of suspended particulate concentration from 10 to 1000 mg 1⁻¹. This relation is consistent with Rayleigh scattering theory in form and (relative to a standard target) amplitude, and is used to generate a cross-sectional profile of sediment concentration in the discharge plume. Estimates of surge speeds from the acoustic records based on a universal shape for density current heads range from 30 to 120 cm s⁻¹. The excess density of one surge was estimated from the reverberation amplitude to be 0.12 g cm⁻³. The additional attenuation of sound waves by suspended particles is important in turbidity currents and may be used to estimate suspended particulate concentration. Thermal processes contribute very little to the additional attenuation by particles with the grain densities of common minerals. A leveed submarine channel extended from the point of the tailing discharge (outfall) over the surface of the tailing deposit as early as 1974. The upper reach of this system was buried in 1978, and by late 1979 a new channel had developed. In 1976-77, the original channel consisted of: (1) a left-hooking upper reach with an average slope of 2.2°, (2) a middle reach (1° slope) with pronounced meanders (700-1100 m wavelengths) "increasing in curvature with distance downstream and (3) a straight lower reach (0.5° slope). The cross-sectional area of the channel decreased with distance downstream, excepting an increase in the first 100-200 m, until the channel disappeared about 5.5 km from the outfall. Acoustic records of the discharge plume in bends indicate overspill from the outer bank and an upward tilt of the upper interface away from the centre of bend curvature. The interfacial slope is steeper than indicated by the cross-channel difference in levee heights. These records together with observed tidal currents suggest that the left hook in the upper reach is caused by a mechanism similar to that which has been suggested for deep-sea channels. Turbidites in gravity cores from the levees are present as layers of vertically-graded, Cu-rich and Fe-poor sand and silt, some of which have load-casted flame-structures or load-pockets at their basai contacts. These layers comprise more of the sediment column with distance down-channel, suggesting that levee-building by overbank spillage from continuous flow becomes less important, and that most of the material transported through the lower reach is carried by turbidity surges. Surge recurrence intervals of 2-5 d are obtained from the number turbidites per core and the local deposition rate. The latter ranged from 0.3-4 m yr⁻¹, as given by changes in water depth, in tailing thickness from seismic reflection surveys, and in diatom frustule abundance in the cores. A model of continuous turbidity flow in submarine channels including entrainment is applied to the Rupert Inlet channel. Results are consistent with a sediment budget based on changes in the tailing deposit volume, and with turbidity surge recurrence intervals. / Science, Faculty of / Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Department of / Graduate

Levesonova komise a její význam pro diskusi o etických hranicích bulvárních médií / The Leveson Inquiry and Its Value for the Discussion about Ethical Limits of Tabloid Media

Roubková, Janetta January 2016 (has links)
This thesis deals with the use of dishonest manners of obtaining information, particularly in connection with the tabloid media. The aim is to evaluate the practices of the tabloid media in gathering information and contribute to the discussion about their ethical borders. It also analyzes investigation of Leveson Inquiry, which was established in 2011 by the British government in response to the phone-hacking scandal connected with tabloid newspaper News of the World. The judicial commission leded by Brian Leveson was tasked to examine the ethical aspects of media and to find out if the system of media self-regulation is still effective. The thesis also includes an analysis of the tabloid environment in the Czech republic. It is based on interviews with representatives of major tabloids in this country.

Die kind as ek-verteller in drie Afrikaanse jeugverhale / Gretel Wybenga

Wybenga, Gretel January 1983 (has links)
This dissertation is devoted to a study of the homo diegetic, extra diegetic narrator (terms derived from Genets). The main premise was to study the child as narrator, to differentiate between the child as narrator and the adult narrator, to peg down specific problems but also to show the advantages of the child narrator over the a adult narrator. With Genette as basis the writer has tried to clear up the widespread confusion in the literary world between the narrator who presents the narrative and the character whose consciousness orients the perspective, the who speaks and who sees of Genette. The first part of the study provides a theoretical background to the second part and is largely based on the typology of Gerard Genette. As the youthful reader is the most likely reader of the three chosen texts (Skrik kom huis toe by Dolf van Niekerk, Woorde is soos wars by Rona Rupert and Boom bomer boomste (Tree-more, tree-most - translated by Eve Merchant, 1983) by Elsabe Steenberg), a chapter in the first part is devoted to an investigation of the enforceability of the criterion used to differentiate between books meant for adults and books meant for children. Concerning these texts the writer’ s contention is that the degree of presence of the narrator as well as die placing of emphasis, either on the narrator or on the character whose perspective orients the narrative (the one who focalizes), determine the specific perspective of the narration. Personal traits of characters are often revealed by their respective objects of focalization. The three short novels previously mentioned are thematically related, but because of the specific handling of the narrator and of focalization in each, a multiplicity of perspectives is opened. In Skrik kom huis toe, the younger, experiencing self is emphasised. Albert's vision , and not that of the narrator, orients the narrative to such an extent that the reader easily identifies with his personal existential crisis. The voice of a narrating instance is barely discernible and has, for all practical purposes, no role in the text. The protagonist focalizes intently upon matters of personal concern and thus reveals an egocentric personality. The thinly populated narrative space as well as the bleakness of this space suggests something of the unhappiness and utter loneliness of the boy, Albert. In Woorde is soos wors, which is thematically related to the previous work , a completely different perspective is revealed because of the accent falling on the narrating instance himself. Uncommon in Afrikaans, the use of het ge- is sustained throughout the text, thereby undeniably creating a distance between the narrator and history. In contrast to the previous text the narrator emphasizes the fact that his experiences be long t o a distant past. Direct identification with an experiencing self is ruled out because of the out spoken diegetic nature of the text. The stress falls on the event rather than on the experience there of. The protagonist seldom focalizes and if he does this text is obviously imbedded in the text of the narrator. His world is nevertheless populated by a variety of people with whom he, without except ion, relates positively. The narrative space shows a much greater variety and is more colourful than that of Skrik kom huis toe . This s is meaningful in the characterization of the protagonist, Josias / MA, PU vir CHO, 1984
