Socio-cultural constructions of gender roles and psychological wellbeing in farm-families of Ogun-state, Nigeria : exploring the complexities.Sokoya, Grace Oluseyi. January 2003 (has links)
The study set out to explore the complexities of the socio-cultural constructions of gender roles
and psychological wellbeing in farm-families of Ogun state Nigeria. The intention of the study
was to gain insight and understanding of the farmers' life experiences since farm-families are
gendered institutions with peculiar needs, problems and aspirations. The study was motivated by
a dearth of research on the constructions and determinants of psychological wellbeing and gender
roles in farm-families. This thesis is therefore an attempt to fill the identified gap in knowledge,
by generating empirical data on the socio-cultural constructions of psychological wellbeing and
gender roles in farm-families.
The thesis is essentially interdisciplinary in nature, drawing from and contributing to the
bodies of knowledge in gender-based research, social psychology, family studies, developmental
research, and agricultural extension. The inclusion of men's and women's views and perceptions,
as opposed to a polarized view of men exclusively as the oppressors and perpetrators of female
subordination is a poststructural feminist approach toward de-emphasizing gender dichotomies.
In addition, the incorporation of children's perspectivesis due to recognition of family factors as
determinants of children's gender identity construction, life outcomes, and the psychological
wellbeing of the entire family. Research participants included forty adults (17 men and 23
women) and thirty-one children (17 boys and 14 girls), drawn from five farming communities in
Ogun state Nigeria. These include: Kango, Ogijan, Boodo-Sanyaolu, Obafemi, and Ilewo-Orile.
Adopting a qualitative research methodology, multiple methods of data collection were
employed. These include life history methodology, in-depth interviews, focus group interviews,
and interactive observation techniques. Although 'psychological wellbeing' is a difficult
construct to define because of its complexity and high subjectivity, adopting the social
representations' framework, the constructions,· meanings and determinants of psychological
wellbeing and gender roles were allowed to emerge from the participants, within their peculiar
socio-historical and cultural contexts. Findings reveal that the constructions of gender identity
and gender roles in farm-families are the foundations of the internalization of gender ideals,
socio-cultural constructions, psychological wellbeing and coping strategies. Children then grow
up to become part of the society and continue the trans-generational perpetuation of gender ideals
and reinforcement of gender stereotypes, and these have several implications for the
psychological wellbeing of entire farm-family members. The problems of women-subordination
vis-a-vis male-domination, therefore, have their roots in the socio-cultural constructions of
gender, gender roles, and their ideological representations. Research outcomes thus provide basis
for the development of sustainable culture-specific feminist strategies, which address the origins
and foundations of gender stereotypes, as well as gender-sensitive and gender-specific
interventions for the enhancement of farm-families' psychological wellbeing.
The adoption of Yoruba terminology in the constructions of psychological wellbeing and
related concepts in the thesis is the beginning of an innovative research process for inventing
contextually meaningful and relevant Yoruba terminology for previously Western-based
concepts. In this thesis for example, psychological wellbeing is construed as - ilera-okan, alafiaokan,
ibale-okan, ilera pipe t 'okan-t 'ara; while stress and emotional disturbance are construed as
- aibale-okan, iporuuru ati pakaleke okan. This is a unique contribution to knowledge. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2003.

Previous issue date: 2017-03-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / The present study presents results of a research on a characterization of the residents and the practice of the Rural Village State Program, having as object the Vila Rural São Camilo, located in the municipality of Palotina, in the State of Paraná. The research identified the profile of the villager of Vila Rural and how the program is put into practice. We analyzed the factors that make it difficult to achieve the objectives of the program, such as the production goal for self-consumption. The research was done through the collection of primary and secondary data, having as an open and closed questions, applied to all 42 families residing in Rural Village, In the response to the invitation to participate, it is highlighted that the majority of families were represented by the female. The results showed that few carry out a commercialization of the products, as well as perform functions to meet their financial needs. It was also observed that the inhabitants of Vila Rural have a shortage of financial resources, and that they depend on programs provided by Government, and also, that there is a lack of technical incentive, for a population that does not plant the products and their commercialization.

Existing on the edge an examination of the viability of rural neighbourhood houses and community centres in South AustraliaPaltridge, Valerie January 2001 (has links)
The viability of rural Neighbourhood Houses may be under threat in South Australia as a result of national and state human service policies. Such policies have resulted in funding withdrawals, closures, the decline of many rural communities. In addition, other local inhibiting factors such as access, stigma, lack of paid staff, volunteers, facilitators and childcare affect Houses' ability to be viable organisations. This study seeks to answer the questions: are Neighbourhood Houses a viable proposition in rural SA; and, are they practicable and serving a useful purpose in contributing to community cohesiveness and wellbeing in rural communities? To examine the viability of Houses and ascertain whether they are contributing to individual and community wellbeing, their roles and functions are critically examined in the policy context and socio-economic environment. / thesis (MResearch)--University of South Australia, 2001.

Against the odds : literacy success in rural, low-income familiesBuckner, Brenda Warren January 2004 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to describe the literacy-related characteristics of the family and home environment that contribute to the development of siblings who are good readers from rural, low income status families. The case study research method was used in order to gather comprehensive and in-depth information about each informant that reflected the reality of the literacy influences. The case study further aided in the investigation of the complex social unit of the family, which consisted of multiple characteristics that influenced literacy attainment. Each case was analyzed in and of itself, and then a cross case analysis was conducted.Five family-related characteristics that influenced the literacy acquisition and attainment of the siblings emerged from the data analysis. The family value for books and literacy materials, evident through the abundance of materials placed in prominent places within the homes and through the careful storage of literacy materials, was evident in each family. Both families were characterized by an enjoyment for reading and writing, evidenced by the number of books each sibling read, trips to the library, reading aloud in the home, and child created written products. Family literacy practices such as discussions about books, a homework routine, regular trips to the library, and members of the family reading to each other were characteristics present in each of the case studies. Another characteristic evident in each of the families was their value for education. Parents expected the siblings to attend college. The siblings also expected that their graduation from college would improve their socioeconomic status. Each case study was also characterized by the presence of support systems that aided in the literacy attainment of the siblings. The siblings all had a love for books and literacy materials, as well as being persistent, responsible, and accountable in their efforts to attain literacy success. The children were intrinsically motivated to be successful, not only in school, but in life. Support and encouragement for literacy development through the home and school contexts were provided by the parents. Family support systems were also fundamental to the literacy attainment of the siblings. / Department of Elementary Education
