Presented diploma paper defines the phenomenon of school of rural renewal through four case studies that illustrate different approaches to this institution, and through their comparison. The empirical research is based on a theory development including definition of key words; rural areas, rural problems and rural renewal being among them. Analyzing interviews with the schools' representatives together with documentation study lead to conducting four examples of schools of rural renewal presenting four strategies for rural renewal. Despite having different approaches to the same topic, they correspond in several characteristics: they are a municipality project, they share the common idea of introducing further education to the regional politics and the target group is defined as the municipality officers. Major development of the phenomenon of schools of rural renewal was experienced in 1990's, when they meant a large contribution to the rural stakeholders' acquirements and capacity building. This diploma paper is dealing with a dilemma of the competition "Village of a year", arranged within The Rural Renewal Program. First, I focus on a conception of country-side and after on The Rural Renewal Program, which is realized under the competancy of the Ministry of Regional Development. From this program I choosed the competition "Village of a year". I am dealing with its history, development, conditions, organization, particular evaluations and I also mention some similar competitions abroad. In the next part of my work I am using a concrete municipality to find out, which activities led to its success in the competition. After, how did the municipality use the financial resour-ces gained from the competition and whether did it benefit in any other way.

In this thesis was created a medium-term draft of actions for the local development needs of village Staré Město pod Landštejnem based on economic, social and organizational possibilities that the village has. This draft was based on the analysis of themes from a questionnaire survey among residents of the village, interviews with local actors, existing development documents related to the community and the author's own ideas. A part of this thesis is the geographical characteristics of the village area and the analysis of literature dealing with the countryside, especially its local and regional development, spatial planning and territorial development of rural settlements and the surrounding landscape, including the analysis of materials prepared for the municipality. Another important output of the thesis is to summarize and supply the existing principles for spatial and landscape planning in the village.
