Estimation and economic analysis on the stock size of Spotted chub mackerel in Taiwan

This article base on the data of Fisheries Department from 82 to 96 discussed the resources of Taiwan mackerel. First of all, Leslie¡¦s method is used to estimate the stock size and catchability coefficient of Taiwan mackerel from 90 to 91. The consequent went under the method of Graham in order to estimate its intrinsic growth rate and environmental carrying capacity. Following that, this paper compared and contrasted the differences between open access and bioeconomic optimum, and adopted the catch data of 82-96 to get the simulative analysis of present operation of mackerel. Finally, for each parameter we made sensitivity analysis to have an overall view of the impact of changed parameters on stock size.

Firstly, the Mellin transform techniques for options on a single underlying stock is presented.After that basket options will be considered. Finally, an improvement of existing numerical results applied to Mellin transforms for 1-basket and 2-basket American Put Option will be discussed concisely. Systematic Design of a Reciprocating Tubular Linear Generator

The purpose of this research is to provide a systematic design of a reciprocating tubular linear generator, which is suitable for harvesting solar thermal energy and ocean wave energy. For the structure design of this generator, the stator utilizes a slotless structure, while the mover utilizes the quasi-Halbach permanent magnet array. The operational magnetic fields are first estimated by magnetic equivalent circuit analysis, and then confirmed by three-dimensional finite element analysis. Also, parameters of the machine structure are optimized by Taguchi¡¦s method. The stator windings are selected iteratively by operational specifications and constraints. Finally, assessments of the machine operational behaviors are performed to achieve a complete and systematic design.

Os Quadros de Mahoney, aqui denominados de Método de Mahoney Tradicional, quando aplicados a cidades localizadas entre duas regiões climáticas distintas apresentam recomendações de projeto contraditórias, pois para dois grupos de dados climáticos estatisticamente iguais de uma mesma cidade chegou-se a recomendações de projeto controversas, devido a uma pequena diferença entre a média dos dados climáticos dos dois grupos. A remodelagem desse método desenvolvida por Harris, através da aplicação da Teoria dos Sistemas Nebulosos, aprimorou o método, permitindo a obtenção de recomendações mais consistentes para esse tipo de cidade. Neste trabalho será apresentada a análise mais detalhada do método remodelado por Harris, denominado aqui de Método de Mahoney Nebuloso, explorando seus resultados intermediários e comparando com os do Método de Mahoney Tradicional. Para tal, foram escolhidas, como casos de estudo, quatro cidades de regiões diferentes dentro do estado de São Paulo, no intuito de se verificar a caracterização climática dessas cidades através da freqüência dos indicadores climáticos dos dois métodos. Os resultados obtidos nas comparações entre esses dois métodos possibilitaram detectar como e onde ocorrem as falhas do método tradicional e as vantagens em se utilizar o Método de Mahoney Nebuloso, além de uma caracterização mais detalhada do comportamento climático das cidades estudadas, principalmente, com relação à transição entre as estações de verão e inverno. / Mahoney’s Tables, which is denominated herein as Traditional Mahoney’s Method, when applied to the cities located in the transitional area between two different climate region, results in contradictory recommendations for the design of dwellings. This contradiction may be observed when we use two groups of climatic data, that are statistically equal, but with small difference between their mean values. In order to obtain more consistent recommendations for the design, the Mahoney’s Tables were remodeled, by Harris, and improved by applying Fuzzy Systems Theory. This work presents validation analysis of the improved method, which is denominated herein as Fuzzy Mahoney’s Method, based on the comparison between intermediated results obtained by Traditional and Fuzzy Mahoney’s Method. Four cities located in different regions of the São Paulo State are used as cases for the study. The comparisons made clear how and where the traditional method fails. It also shows the advantages of using the Fuzzy Mahoney’s Method, which is able to perform a more detailed characterization of climate, mainly, in the transition between summer and winter.

Chemical oxidation of refinery spent caustic liquor containing naphthenic acids

Spent caustic liquors (SCL) generated from crude oil refineries have characteristics of high COD (chemical oxygen demand) contents and relatively small generation rates as compared with general wastewater ones. The odorous naphthenates, phenolates, and sulfides in the liquors adversely affect the normal operation of the related wastewater treatment plants and effluent water qualities. This study aims at the reduction of COD in a naphthenic spent caustic liquor generated from a domestic refinery with crude processing and naphtha cracking units. Primary tests indicated that around 50% of the COD in the SCL could be biodegraded. Chemical oxidation methods were tried to possibly upgrade the COD removal. Experiments indicated that acidification of the SCL sample to pH 2-3 could reduce the COD from an average of 51,600 to 20,800 mg/L by removing the separated naphthenic acids. Fenton¡¦s method with oxidants of 20 mL/L 35% H2O2 and FeSO4.7H2O 5 g/L, oxidation time of 1 hour at conditions of pH 2-3 and 80-100oC, could reduce the COD of the acidified SCL from an average of 20,800 to 11,100 mg/L. The overall COD removal was around 78% and the efficiency is comparable to that of a traditional Wet Air Oxidation (WAO) process of around 75%. Economic analysis indicated that for treating the SCL of 80 m3/day by the traditional WAO process, an initial equipment cost of 10 millions USD and annual operating cost of around 1.5 millions USD are required. By the developed acidification-Fenton¡¦s process, an initial equipment cost of 0.7 million USD and annual operating cost of around 0.5 million USD are expected. The developed process can be superior to the WAO one.

Validation study : HemoCue Hb 201 + as a tool in comparative physiological field studies on avian blood

Haemoglobin concentration is becoming a widely popular parameter to use to assess physiological condition within a broad range of species. Assessments of large populations would preferable be done in field to receive quick results and avoid confounding factors associated with transport of blood. A validation study is here performed to see how well the point-of-care device HemoCue Hb 201 + can assess haemoglobin concentration on avian blood. Nucleated erythrocytes have previously been pointed out as something that makes it problematic to apply HemoCue Hb 201 +, designed for human blood, on avian blood. Here it is shown that HemoCue Hb 201 + accurately can estimate haemoglobin concentration for chicken-, tinamou-, and ostrich blood. However, manipulation of ostrich cells, to yield a larger mean corspuscular volume, results in HemoCue Hb 201 + overestimating haemoglobin concentration. A large mean corpuscular volume could therefore be something that impair accuracy in values retrieved with HemoCue Hb 201 +. This study shows that HemoCue Hb 201 + seems possible to apply on avian blood to some extent, but highlights the importance of validation studies when applying this device on new species.
