Whose Safety Matters? Exaltation, Risky Refugees, and Canadian Safe Country PracticesField, Emily 26 November 2013 (has links)
This thesis seeks to examine what cultural work is done on behalf of the state by the Safe Third Country Agreement and Bill C-31’s designated country of origin policy? I will be drawing on the work of Critical Race feminists and Critical Security Studies theorists to examine the concept of safety, systems of domination, and the parameters of national belonging. I will be performing a discourses analysis of the government’s and the Canadian Council for Refugee’s year one report of the Safe Third Country Agreement. I will also be performing a discourse analysis of the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website’s discussion of designated countries of origin. I will argue that state exaltation constructs the state, refugees, and safety in a way that reifies systems of domination.

Ladění a testování databázových systémů pro potřeby digitálního archivu SAFEPobuda, Tomáš January 2008 (has links)
Thesis deal with tuning of database Oracle, which is used by digital archive SAFE. In the concrete deal with setting parameters of database. It is divided to three parts. In first part it characterizes factors that influence performance of database. In second part it describes possibilities of tuning and setting Oracle database. In third part it is first introduced digital archive SAFE, after that it is chosen suitable testing tool for workload generation and described test scenarios and last are performed tests and compared results at different database database settings. Goal of thesis is description and trial tuning of Oracle database, which is used by digital archive SAFE. Other goal is test of files inserting into digital archive at different settings (saving to the database, on file system). These goals are achieved by testing tool workload generation and compare response time at different settings. Contribution of this thesis is above all trial of tuning Oracle database, which is used by digital archive SAFE. Document can be used like handbook for implementatory of tested implementation of digital archive SAFE.

Implementing the Safe System Approach at Intersections in UtahMacGregor, Ian Patrick 22 November 2024 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis investigates the principles and elements of the Safe System Approach, a new paradigm in roadway safety. A compendium of practice was created to determine recommendations on how to implement the Safe System Approach at intersections and observe how other jurisdictions are implementing it. Several strategies identified include the Safe Systems at Intersections (SSI) methodology, Safe System Alignment Frameworks, Vision Zero communities, incorporating the Safe System Approach into the Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) or Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), mandating the Safe System Approach be considered in all projects, and the Organizational Safety Culture Self-Assessment. These policies do not exclusively implement the Safe System Approach at intersections but help organizations to adopt the Safe System Approach and move beyond traditional safety methods. Guidance for Safe System design was also investigated, including the Safe System Roadway Design Hierarchy and the Safe System Approach Framework. Commonly identified physical countermeasures that implement the Safe System Approach at intersections were evaluated. The countermeasures were sorted into tables according to the type of safety impact provided. Commonly identified policies and practices were also organized, although they do not apply specifically to intersections. Based on the results of this research, several recommendations for UDOT include encouraging local communities to become Vision Zero communities, incorporating SSI into the Intersection Control Evaluation (ICE) program, institutionalizing the Safe System Approach through the FHWA Organizational Safety Culture Self-Assessment, updating the SHSP, strategic goals, vision, and implementing pilot programs or additional research on various countermeasures and strategies.

Promoting Infant Safe Sleep Through Staff EducationCrawford, MaryAnn 01 January 2019 (has links)
Sudden unexplained infant death (SUID) is a sudden death of an infant under 1 year of age that cannot be explained after an investigation or an autopsy. SUID is the leading cause of infant deaths in the United States; SUID is considered a sentinel event to the birth hospital. Birth hospitals are held accountable for education, training, and role modeling of infant safe sleep practices (SSP) to reduce infant sleep-related deaths up to 1 year of age. This educational project was designed to answer the project-focused question of whether the implementation of an evidence-based, safe sleep training program for nurses would improve their knowledge of SSP. Bandura's social cognitive theory and the root cause analysis theory were used to guide the project that provided education on SSP and methods for teaching SSP for 48 nurses who work in a postpartum unit in a large hospital in the northeastern United States. A search of the literature provided the content from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for the education program and served the basis for the 15-item multiple-choice test, which was used for the pretest, posttest design project. The test was administered to the nurse participants who ranged in education from associate degree, baccalaureate degree, to master's degrees. The project goal was to increase nurses' knowledge by training and role modeling infant safe sleep environments and to reduce SUIDs. Results of the pretest and posttest evaluation revealed significant improvement in test scores from a pretest M = 72.9 to a posttest M = 90.0 (p <.05). The implications of this project for social change are that each nurse's knowledge and abilities to teach parents and families about SUID prevention strategies improve, sudden infant deaths may decrease in this hospital setting.

Latest Status on Adding FTS Capability to a Missile Telemetry SectionKujiraoka, Scott, Fielder, Russell, Jones, Johnathan, Sandberg, Aliva 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2010 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Sixth Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 25-28, 2010 / Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, California / Development is currently underway to produce a dual redundant Flight Termination System (FTS) capable Missile Telemetry Section. This FTS will mainly consist of a conformal wraparound antenna, two flight termination safe & arm (FTS&A) devices, two flight termination receivers (FTR), two explosive foil initiators (EFI) and destruct charge. This paper will discuss the current status of the development of these FTS components along with the process of obtaining the Flight Certification from Range and System Safety to fly this newly outfitted missile on a governmental test range.
