The present study will discuss J. D. Salinger's alienated misfits in direct relation to the psychology of the gifted, creative individual. By analyzing Seymour, Holden and Franny as representatives of a specific intellectual type, this study will provide the reader with a fresh insight into J. D. Salinger's fictional world.

<p>The aim of this essay was to show that the theme of how a troubled young man in a crisis who is saved by the love of a little girl is central in J.D Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye, as well as in his short story “For Esmé - with Love and Squalor”. Furthermore, the argument was that there is a strong kinship between the protagonists of both stories as well as the little girl, thereby supporting the existing opinion of critics that Salinger is a writer who returns to favored themes and characters.</p>

This thesis examines the family as presented in the works of J.D. Salinger. Two aspects of the family relationship are examined: how members of the family relate to each other and how they relate to people outside the family. The works used in this study are Nine Stories, The Catcher in the Rye, Pranny and Zooey, and Raise High the Roofbeams, Carpenters and Seymour, An Introduction.This examination reveals Salinger’s shift from a parent-dominated family to a child-centered family as well as the move from a family group which interacts with people outside the family to a family which has little relation to the world outside itself.
