"What will you do?" : Phaedra's tragic desire and social order in the West

Chartrand, Amy. January 2008 (has links)
The Phaedra and Hippolytus myth is a frequently dramatized narrative of uncontrollable desire. This thesis examines two versions, Euripides' Hippolytus, first presented in 428 B.C. as part of the Athenian festival of Dionysus, and Sarah Kane's 1996 play, Phaedra's Love, first presented as part of the Gate Theatre of London's "new playwrights, ancient sources" series. In each play, Phaedra's desire is constructed according to sociohistorical conditions which are temporary in their cultural significance. Once the moment of creation has passed, so have the conditions in which each version of desire is originally understood. However, these constructions of Phaedra's desire also bear a simultaneously transhistorical quality as they complicate human notions of agency. In the West, therefore, Phaedra's desire is represented as a tragically constructed emotion. This thesis posits desire as transhistorically relevant in its ability to question modes of human subjectivity.

No strangers to beauty : contemporary black female artists, Saartje Baartman and the Hottentot Venus body

Skelly, Julia January 2006 (has links)
Saartje BaartJnan was a South African woman who signed a contract in 1810 that effectively made her the property of two white men wishing to exhibit her in Europe because of the shape and color of her body. In this text 1 examine two very different categories of representations of Baartman. First, I discuss images that were produced during Baartman's lifetime that discursively transformed her from a black woman with an identity into a pathologized body known as the Hottentot Venus, and second, I discuss the contemporary black female artists who are producing art inspired by Baartman in order to problematize the racist and sexist assumptions that have been inscribed on the black female body. My research encompasses important scholarship done by white feminist art historians, as well as that by black feminist theorists, and my thoughts on this subject have also been informed tremendously by work that has been done on the visual culture of slavery and on racist stereotypes by post-colonial scholars.

The Art Of Lyric Improvisation: A Comparative Study of Two Renowned Jazz Singers

de Jong, Susan Johanna January 2008 (has links)
This research is an analysis of the range of skills and knowledge required to produce, effectively, results in the Art of Lyric Improvisation in the field of jazz singing. Lyric Improvisation is the art of retaining the primary lyrics of a song but, using improvisational inventiveness, changing every other aspect. The study focuses on the manipulation of melody, rhythm, time feel, style, range, articulation and improvisation in the performances of renowned jazz vocalists Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae. The research is based on their multiple recordings of "Sometimes I'm Happy" (Youmans/Caesar) between the years1955-1965. The method compares different elements of the individual singers' improvisations to the published notation. These elements include: syncopation of the rhythm, motific development, expanding the range of pitch, variances in timbre and articulation and spontaneous re-composition of the melody all while maintaining the original lyric. The outcomes, however, can be applied over a multitude of tunes from any American Song Book composer or jazz standard sung in historically swing styles of the past century, or with contemporary developments.

Women in the fiction of Sarah Orne Jewett

Bicksler, Marith R. January 1983 (has links)
Although Jewett employs many local color conventions, she transcends the school in her subtle, controlled use of dialect, her blending of setting with story, and her skill in creating characters, especially women. She also maintains a sophisticated tension between local color polarities (city/country, individual/society, child/adult, land/sea, past/present, and insider/outsider), finding both sides necessary to a balanced portrayal of place and people.Through an internal analysis in of fifty-seven stories, this study classifies women according to marital or social groups. A chapter on courtship relationships finds that women usually have the upper hand, displaying a mixture of pragmatism and humor. Courtships often involve romance but never passion. Having made a choice, women accept the imperfections of men with understanding and tolerance.Women also form small groups of two or three which are often centered around rite-of-passage situations. These groups transcend but maintain social standing; they often function by a non-verbal code which is sometimes misunderstood. Or, the relationships may exist in the mind or heart, crossing geographic and temporal barriers. For women, isolation brings mental, spiritual, and even physical death. The group of younger women who have a special gift or calling for medicine, teaching, art, or business most clearly reveals Jewett's nascent feminism. These women must choose between the calling and the more traditional feminine role. Often they have a special affinity for their mothers.Sisters, externally alike, function according to a clearly defined hierarchy; the older is more controlling and motherly, the younger often prettier, more gentle, and less disciplined.Jewett's forte, the spinsters and widows who often live and function alone, are usually self-reliant and optimistic. They may create imaginary audiences or alter egos for companionship. Overcoming occasional temptations to selfishness, they maintain the family home with dignity and fortitude, even when the social and economic problems of a passing era become overwhelming. Jewett's women are strong and resourceful, optimistic and resilient. Her success in character portrayal lies in the ability to blend specific homey detail with universality of thought and feeling.

Vårdpersonalens uppfattning om brister och missförhållanden inom särskilt boende för äldre

Hansson, Kristin, Falck, Sofia January 2014 (has links)
Background Equal and good care is a right for every person in Sweden according to National Board of Sweden. Previous studies show that patients in geriatric care are exposed to abuses of various shapes. The most common form of abuse is neglect of the resident. To give good care the care workers need to respect and maintain the integrity of the resident.   Aim The aim of the study was to investigate if care workers in nursing homes observed any abuse against the elderly and what kind of abuse. The aim was also to find out what possible causes of the abuse could be and investigate the care workers knowledge of Lex Sarah.   Method Study-specific questionnaire with quantitative approach.   Result The result shows that 69 of the 80 respondents had noticed any kind of abuse or neglect in the last six months in their nursing home. The most common abuse or neglect was inadequate care of the teeth and hygiene among the elderly. The respondents think that lack of education and stressful situations may be the cause of the abuse and neglect.   Conclusion The study shows that abuse and neglect does exist in Swedish nursing homes. Causes of the current abuse is ignorance and lack of time among careworkers. The knowledge of Lex Sarah was high among the careworkers.
