Aplicação da técnica de varredura Z ao estudo de não-linearidades ópticas em absorvedores saturáveis / Application of the Z-scan technique to the study of optical nonlinearities in saturable absorbersOliveira, Luimar Cavalcanti de 05 May 1995 (has links)
In this work we investigated the behavior of the Z-scan technique in the case where the phase of the electric field departs from Gaussian due to the saturation of the optical nonlinearity. The usual theory of Z-scan, based on Gaussian decomposition method, cannot describe experimental results obtained with well-characterized chromium-doped saturable absorbers of slow (milisecond) response: Al2O3:Cr3+ (ruby), Beal2O4:Cr3+ (alexandrite) e GdAlO3: Cr3+ (chromium doped gadolinium aluminate). This aim can be accomplished by means of a theory based on the Hankel transform of the electric field passing through the sample and the inclusion of the phase saturation. The alternative formalism also allows the inclusion of thermal effects. As in the case of Kerr media, the nonlinear refractive index can be obtained from the measurement of the transmittance difference between peak and valley, in the refractive case, or of the transmittance peak, in the absorptive case. Concerning to experimental part, a single-beam time-resolved Z-scan is introduced to characterize the nonlinear refraction of the above materials. Owing to the elimination of parasitic linear effects, the technique is able to measure induced wave front as small as N104. We demonstrate this method on several materials using low power Ar+ and He-Ne lasers

Femtosecond Cr⁴⁺ : forsterite laser for applications in telecommunications and biophotonicsMcWilliam, Alan January 2007 (has links)
In this thesis, the development of a femtosecond Cr⁴⁺:forsterite solid-state laser is described where the mode-locking procedure was initiated using two novel saturable absorbers. One was a GaInNAs quantum-well device and the other a quantum-dot-based saturable absorber. These devices had not previously been exploited for the generation of femtosecond pulses from a solid-state laser but in the course of this project, successful mode-locked laser operation in the femtosecond domain was demonstrated for both devices. When the GaInNAs device was incorporated in the Cr⁴⁺:forsterite laser, transform-limited pulses with durations as short as 62fs were obtained. The performance of this femtosecond laser was significantly superior to that for previous quantum-well based saturable absorbers in the 1300nm spectral region. The dynamics of the device were investigated with the aim of refining subsequent devices and to explore the potential to grow future devices for use at longer wavelengths. At the outset of my research work quantum-dot based saturable absorbers had not be used for the mode locking of solid-state lasers in the femtosecond regime. The work presented in this thesis showed that quantum-dot structures could be exploited very effectively for this purpose. This was initially achieved with the quantum-dot element being inclined at an off-normal incidence within the cavity but experimental assessment together with further development of the device allowed for implementation at normal incidence. Reliable operation of the femtosecond laser was demonstrated very convincingly where transform-limited pulses of 160fs duration were generated. Having developed practical femtosecond Cr⁴⁺:forsterite lasers, the final part of the project research was directed towards exemplar applications for a laser operating in the 1300nm spectral region. These were biophotonics experiments in which assessments of both deep tissue penetration and two-photon chromosome cutting were undertaken. This work confirmed the suitability of the 1300nm laser radiation for propagation through substantial thicknesses of biological tissue (~15cm). The demonstration of highly localised two-photon cutting of Muntjac deer chromosomes also represented a novel result because single-photon absorption could be avoided effectively and the temporal broadening of the femtosecond pulses in the delivery optics arising from group velocity dispersion around 1300nm was minimal.

Two-dimensional material inks and composites for printed electronics and energyCarey, Tian January 2018 (has links)
This thesis explores the application of two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene and single layer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) which are produced by liquid phase exfoliation for use in printed electronics and energy composite applications. In Chapter 2 I give a broad overview of the electrical, mechanical and optical properties of 2D materials among other nanomaterials that were used in the thesis such as carbon nanotubes and conductive polymers. Additionally I review the techniques and theory behind the exfoliation and dispersion of functional layered materials. In Chapter 3 I present the coating and printing techniques which were used in this thesis along with the experimental techniques and methods which I use to characterise my inks, films and devices. Chapter 4 is the first experimental chapter of the thesis and demonstrates the printing of 2D material heterostructures to create fully printed dieletrically gated field effect transistors with 2D materials on textile and polymer substrates. In this chapter I also demonstrate reprogrammable volatile memory, p and n type inverters, complementary inverters, and logic gates which pave the way to fully printed integrated circuits, operational at room temperature and pressure with 2D materials processed in liquid. In Chapter 5, I review spray coating (a highly industrial scalable printing technique), in terms of the optimisation of its parameters to achieve thin films of nanomaterials on three-dimensional (3D) surfaces. I then demonstrate that it is possible to create large area (∼750 cm2) transparent conducting films around curved surfaces with spray coating enabling a semi-transparent (around 360°) spherical touch sensor for interactive devices. Chapter 6 explores printed photonics for applications in terahertz (THz) frequencies. Here I demonstrate the feasibility of liquid phase exfoliated graphene to create THz saturable absorbers (SAs) which could enable many applications in THz frequencies such as tomography or time-resolved spectroscopy that require mode-locked (i.e. enabling a train of short pulses to be derived from continuous-wave operation) THz pulses. I also demonstrate that these SAs can be inkjet printed on demand providing unprecedented compactness in a quantum cascade laser system. Finally in Chapter 7, I look at the application of graphene in microbial fuel cells (MFC). I demonstrate that enhanced MFC output arises from the interplay of the improved surface area, enhanced conductivity, and catalytic surface groups of a graphene based electrode. As a final step graphene based anodes and cathodes which were entirely platinum free were combined to create an environmentally sustainable energy source.

Previous issue date: 2015-08-27 / Fundo Mackenzie de Pesquisa / In this thesis, for the first time we present results of passively-mode-locking O-band Raman fiber laser operating at 1310 nm by using carbon nanotubes as saturable absorber. The first results were obtained for an experimental setup based on single mode fiber (SMF) with laser operating near zero fiber dispersion at 1310 nm at anomalous regime. In this same configuration, a study of pulse duration shortening in terms of intracavity dispersion management with dispersion shifted fiber lengths (DSF) was performed. Replacing the SMF by a highly doped germanium fiber as gain medium of Raman fiber laser, operation was shifted to normal dispersion regime and passive mode-locking was also generated. In this laser, a study of pulse duration shortening in terms of gain medium length reduction was performed and the picosecond pulse regime of the laser could be estimated. We also present a brief comparison between the two dispersion regimes of the Raman fiber laser and passive mode-locking results obtained with different diameters of carbon nanotubes as saturable absorbers.

Previous issue date: 2010-08-06 / In this work we present a study about ultrashort pulse-train generation in Erbiumdoped fiber lasers, by the passive mode-locking technique, with the use of carbon nanotubes saturable absorbers. Carbon nanotubes were incorporated into laser cavities by two techniques: thermophoresis optically-driven deposition and thin films incorporating carbon nanotubes. The second technique has become more advantageous than the first one, because is possible to control carbon nanotubes concentration and thin films thicknesses. Additionally, we present a study about thin films incorporating carbon nanotubes optimization, in order to maximize generated output bandwidths in passively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber lasers. We used 0.8 and 1.0 nm diameters carbon nanotubes, fabricated thin films with different transmission values (different αL product values), laser cavities with different features, such as total cavity length, total accumulated dispersion, repetition rate. In this context, best results were achieved with thin films containing 1.0 nm diameter carbon nanotubes, with films transmission about 37% (αL product close to 1.0), in 9 m long laser cavity (0.8 m of highly- Erbium-doped fiber and 8.2 m of SMF) of total accumulated dispersion of 0.153 ps/nm. The largest bandwidth measured, with those characteristics cavity parameters, was 5,7 nm.
