The impact of academic mobility on the convergence of cultures and its consequences for organizational behaviorBrueggemann, Eric January 2013 (has links)
Thesis (S.M. in Management Studies)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2013. / Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 101-110). / The age of globalization does not only lead to increased flow of goods around the world, it also tremendously increases the interaction between people from different cultural backgrounds. Management research in the past decade has succeeded in developing recommendations about organizational behavior practices that cater to the idiosyncrasies of the culture of the country a company is located in. While these recommendations adequately address differences in value perceptions of the general population of countries, they do not account for peculiarities that are specific to the senior management of a multinational company. Unlike the general population of a country, this subgroup is mostly composed of individuals that are constantly exposed to an international setting. This study argues that this international exposure, through academic mobility or through professional activities in a global context, deeply impacts the cultural value perceptions of individuals. The setting of MIT Sloan as an international business school is used as a proxy to replicate the senior management setting of multinational companies. A comparison of the national dimensions of culture that exist within this sample is conducted to support the claim that cultures within such a setting converge. I find that individuals within these settings no longer represent a cultural profile that is consistent with that of their home countries but that they rather converge around a specific cultural profile. Based on these findings, contemporary organizational behavior practices for cross-cultural contexts are examined. Potential changes to organizational processes that are derived from the findings in the MIT Sloan sample are described to establish the practical implications of the conducted study. / by Eric Brueggemann. / S.M.in Management Studies

A consumer guide to the benefits and obstacles of transitioning to the hydrogen fuel cellBoggie, Gordon M. (Gordon Mathieson), 1957-, Keys, Elizabeth A. 1969- January 2002 (has links)
Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2002. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 63-66). / Hydrogen Fuel Cells are a much talked about technology often represented as promising virtually unlimited amounts of non-polluting power by chemically reacting hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe, with oxygen without combustion. Our analysis indicates that fuel cells are indeed a promising technology still under development. Our analysis concludes that there are considerable problems to overcome before a widespread transition to hydrogen fuel cells occurs, including cost, infrastructure, performance and most importantly generation of the hydrogen fuel itself. The infrastructure and hydrogen generation hurdles are extremely large, enough to require significant government intervention before renewable hydrogen resources displace fossil fuels. We believe the transition to renewable hydrogen fuel sources, and fuel cells are inevitable given the diminishing, non-renewable fossil fuel reserves. We further believe that we are rapidly approaching the date required to make fundamental energy policy changes to enable a hydrogen economy. Disappointingly, there is little evidence that U.S. government is prepared to make this decision in a timely manner. / by Gordon M. Boggie and Elizabeth A. Keys. / M.B.A.

The myth of spontaneous connection : an ethnographic study of the situated nature of virtual teamworkRennecker, Julie January 2001 (has links)
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2001. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 241-247). / This thesis reports the findings of an exploratory 23-month multi-site participant-observation study of one multi-organizational virtual team in the automotive industry. Observing and interacting with the team members in their local work sites and in team meetings, I investigated the influence of virtual team members' situation in their respective local work contexts on the work, communication, and participation patterns observed at the team level. I found that the team members' local work worlds directly influenced both their capacity and their incentive to contribute to the team. In addition, I found that the participation patterns observed at the team level reflected, in large part, the unintended cumulative consequence of the members' respective locally-advantageous strategies for responding to local events and conditions. Using Giddens' structuration theory, I show how the members' consistent application of these local world management strategies under changing local circumstances accounts for contrasting participation patterns observed at the team level between the first and second years of the study. The thesis contributes to the virtual team literature by extending the analytic focus to include virtual team members' local work contexts, bringing to light aspects of virtual collaboration that have heretofore been largely matters of speculation and, consequently, opening new avenues for further research. / by Julie A. Entrepost.com business plan / e-Commerce business plan for Entrepost, Inc.Zhou, Baolin, 1964- January 2000 (has links)
Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2000. / Also available online at the DSpace at MIT website. / Includes bibliographical references. / The development of Internet technology and its application in e-commerce business activities have resulted in a revolutionary impact on the traditional model of the cross-border trade activities. The forthcoming entry of China to World Trade Organization is going to present unprecedented opportunities between China and the United States, and eventually between China and the world. This thesis of Entrepost.Com Business Plan is intended to evaluate such unleashed opportunities and present a new business model that enables the small and medium sized manufacturing enterprises in China and the United States which have been largely excluded because of their lack of resources to overcome the various barriers in the process of cross-border transaction activities. The business model of Entrepost.Com provides a set of integrated solutions to its targeted customers in the selected industrial segment through its online manufacturing community services and offline total customer solutions. The values that Entrepost.Com proposes to its customers will be the incremental opportunities, and efficient and effective facilities for them to penetrate into foreign markets. / by Baolin Zhou. / M.B.A.
