Souvenir of Kyoto's Entertainment: The Shiomi Rakuchu-Rakugaizu Screens in the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art / Shiomi Rakuchu-Rakugaizu Screens in the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

ix, 95 p. : ill., maps. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This thesis examines an unstudied pair of eight-paneled Japanese rakuchurakugaizu screens donated by Dr. Robert H. Shiomi to the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA). Rakuchu-rakugaizu (Scenes in and Out of the Capital) was a popular painting genre that developed over the late sixteenth to seventeenth centuries. In contrast to most accepted scholarly views of this genre, I believe the Shiomi screens are void of political intentions and function as souvenirs. Closely comparing the visual traits to other known examples and contemporary travel guides demonstrates the shift in focus to entertainment and famous sites in the capital available to Kyoto's citizens and visitors alike. Kyoto's history, the prevalence of travel that came with a reunified Japan during the Tokugawa hegemony, and the identification of activities, temples, and shrines within the screens solidifies this argument. This facilitates a nuanced understanding of this painting genre and demonstrates alternative approaches for its study. / Committee in Charge: Akiko Walley, Chair; Charles Lachman; Andrew Edmund Goble

High Prevalence of Buprenorphine in Prenatal Drug Screens in an Appalachian City

Alexander, Charlotte, Breuel, Kevin, Olsen, Martin 01 March 2020 (has links)
Objectives To define the magnitude of buprenorphine presence in the urine drug screens of pregnant women and to assess the presence of illicit buprenorphine use versus the presence of prescribed buprenorphine use. Methods Initial prenatal drug screen results for all pregnant patients in our practice for a 1-year period were analyzed and tabulated. Results Buprenorphine was found in the urine drug screens of 16% of pregnant patients. The presence of buprenorphine was by far the highest for any substance associated with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). We estimate that the exposure to buprenorphine of approximately one-third of individuals in our population is associated with illicit buprenorphine use. Conclusions The high rate of NAS in our region is primarily associated with both illicit and prescribed buprenorphine rather than other substances. Buprenorphine usage at the time that prenatal care is initiated, rather than opiate use at the onset of prenatal care, is the underlying factor that must be addressed if our region is to successfully combat our high rates of NAS.

Vibration Analysis & Vibrating Screens: Theory & Practice

Parlar, Jay January 2010 (has links)
<p> Vibration Analysis (VA) is a key technique used for maintenance and fault detection of vibrating machinery. The purpose of maintenance is to analyze how well the machinery is operating within its target parameters, while fault detection is done to diagnose and locate a fault that might be developing on the machinery.</p> <p> If we consider s(n) to be the true signal from a rotating system and e(n) to be the additive noise corrupting the signal, then the observed signal is x(n) = s(n) + e(n). If s(n) is composed of a main driving frequency sm(n) and summed fault frequencies sf(n), then fault detection is the study of sf(n). In fault detection, we eliminate e(n) as much as possible so that sf(n) can be isolated and studied.</p> <p> This thesis presents a technique based on cross-correlation, utilizing a network of sensors, to eliminate e(n) from the measurements, preserving just the correlated frequency content. This is extended to provide a means of localizing the source of the frequency content, based on the relative strengths of the members of the complete set of cross-correlations between all sensors. This technique has been shown to be able to extract a signal buried by noise, in situations where the traditional FFT fails.</p> <p> To enable this, a new VA system has been developed. This introduces new wireless vibration sensors as well as a data capture unit capable of providing real-time VA data to technicians. The system can simultaneously capture data from eight sensors, so the data can be used not only for traditional VA techniques, but also in conjunction with the cross-correlation technique described above. This system is now commercially available and in use by dozens of technicians around the world. </p> / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
