The patriotic consensus: Winnipeg, 1939-1945

Perrun, Jody C. 08 October 2008 (has links)
Historians have established the framework of Canada’s general political, economic, and military participation in the Second World War, but there has been little research into the ways that the national war effort affected individuals or local communities. This dissertation explores the wartime experience of ordinary Winnipeggers through their responses to recruiting, the treatment of minorities, war finance publicity, participation in voluntary community service, and the adjustments made necessary by family separation. It questions the prevailing narrative of the war as a unifying national experience, focusing on issues like civilian morale and the relationship between citizens and the state. In some ways, the depth of the patriotic consensus was remarkable in a city that was far removed from any real enemy threat. The population was highly polyethnic, with strong class divisions and a vibrant tradition of political protest. Both factors meant a greater number of potential fault lines. But the large number of ethnic groups in Winnipeg and the Left’s relative lack of political power also meant that there was no dominant minority to seriously challenge the interpretation of the war expressed by the city’s charter group. Social cohesion was enhanced in Winnipeg despite the absence of real danger for a number of reasons: the connection of ethnic communities to occupied or threatened homelands, like Poland or the United Kingdom; the effectiveness of both official and unofficial information management, such as Victory Loan publicity; and the strong identification people maintained with family and friends in the armed forces, war industries, or state institutions. The war effort affected people as individuals and as members of families and the wider community. Its impact was at times unjust and destructive yet most hardships were ultimately accepted as necessary for the war’s successful prosecution. / February 2009

New PNHN Pincer-Type Ligands and Their Complexes for Transfer Hydrogenation

Konrad, Brandon January 2009 (has links)
The ligand tBu2PC2H4NHCH2Py (PNHN) was synthesized starting from 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde and 2-chloroethanamine. Initial attempts for coordination of the PNHN ligand to a metal center was performed using [IrCl(COE)2]2, IrCl3·3H2O, [RuCl2(p-cymene)]2 and RuCl2(PPh3)3. The reaction between the PNHN ligand and [IrCl(COE)2]2 under H2 resulted in the chloride IrCl(H)2(PNHN). Synthesis of the active hydride species is currently under investigation. A reaction of the PNHN ligand with RuCl2(PPh3)3 under nitrogen afforded the dichloride RuCl2(PPh3)(PNHN). Treatment of the dichloride with KOBut in 2-pentanol led to the formation of the dihydride RuH2(PPh3)(PNHN). Formation of the 16-electron amido complex RuH(PPh3)3(PNN) was achieved through the evolution of H2. The dihydride demonstrated good potential catalytic activity for transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone and cyclohexanone. Current work involves the synthesis of a chiral analogue of the PNHN ligand.

Second law analysis of premixed compression ignition combustion in a diesel engine using a thermodynamic engine cycle simulation

Oak, Sushil Shreekant 10 October 2008 (has links)
A second law analysis of compression ignition engine was completed using a thermodynamic engine cycle simulation. The major components of availability destruction and transfer for an entire engine cycle were identified and the influence of mode of combustion, injection timing and EGR on availability balance was evaluated. The simulation pressure data was matched with the available experimental pressure data gathered from the tests on the Isuzu 1.7 L direct injection diesel engine. Various input parameters of the simulation were changed to represent actual engine conditions. Availability destruction due to combustion decreases with advanced injection timing and under premixed compression ignition (PCI) modes; but it is found to be insensitive to the level of EGR. Similarly, trends (or lack of trends) in the other components of availability balance were identified for variation in injection timing, EGR level and mode of combustion. Optimum strategy for efficient combustion processes was proposed based on the observed trends.

Political Economy of the Second Financial Reformation

Liu, Yin-liang 21 July 2009 (has links)
The second financial reformation marked a new change of Taiwan politician and economic regime. Every financial reformation signified that the government had to resolve some hiding problems of interaction structure between government, enterprise, and financial sector (hereafter GEF). Therefore, this study tries to analysis the interactive structure of the second financial reformation. In this study, the Chap. 2 builds up a basic comparative analysis of GEF interaction structure of financial regime transformation after 1945 to 2002. Then, the Chap. 3 is about the background of policy setting in the first financial reformation. And the Chap.4 goes on discussing about the difference of interaction structure between the second financial reformation and the other financial reformations. In this chapter, the author will also points out the effects of globalization in the second financial reformation. The conclusion summarizes this study in three points. The first point refers to the GEF interaction structure of every main financial reformation in Taiwan after 1945 but earlier than the second financial reformation. And the second point refers to what the reasons were to motivate the second financial reformation. The last point indicates to the change of GEF interaction structure after the second reformation.
