The concem with professional ethlcs has been present among the Brazilian social workers, even betere the legal regulation of this profession, in 1962. The first Professional Ethics Code for Social Workers was prepared in 1947, by the Social Worker Brazilian Association. The present study, which is being presented here as a Master's Degree dissertation, is an attempt to comprehend the social worker professional ethics in the Brazilian reality, especially in the city of São Paulo, where I have been studying and working on the subject for 20 years / o Serviço Socialconstitui-senuma profissão eminentemente ética por lidar com os mais agudos problemas humanos, desde as estratégias de sobrevivênciada população pauperizada,às lutas dos trabalhadores pelos seus direitos, até os problemasmais pessoaisde relacionamento familiar e social. A preocupação com a ética profissional esteve presente, entre os assistentes sociais brasileiros,antes mesmo da regulamentação legal da profissão, ocorrida em 1962. O primeiro Código de Ética Profissional dos Assistentes Sociais, elaborado pela Associação Brasileira de Assistentes Sociais, data de 1947. o presente estudo, que ora apresentamos como Dissertação de Mestrado, constitui-se numa tentativa de compreensão da ética profissional dos assistentes sociais em nossa realidade, particularmente na cidade de São Paulo, onde estudamos e exercemos a profissão há 20 anos
