A veritable press : short stories

Myers, Nathan C. January 2007 (has links)
A Veritable Press is a collection of six short stories, focusing on the troubled relationships of its characters, exhibited both internally and externally. While the characters in these stories experience the effects of their own decisions, they are generally more affected by forces outside their control, whether those are the choices of others, or the inexplicability of nature. Most characters seek redemption, though they are denied the means to deliver themselves as they move towards an end that seems inevitable. This feeling of inevitability represents the arbitrary and seemingly unsystematic nature of circumstance. Through the use of distinct voices, multiple narratives, and metafiction, each piece works to exhibit an entirely realistic portrait of its places and characters, endeavoring to force its reader to face what is most unpleasant and appalling, in order to understand it. / You and I -- Violet in blue, swimming -- Mole hunt -- We three make up a solitude -- Savages -- Other books. / Department of English

How We Live Today and Other Stories

Rohloff, Gregory W 23 May 2019 (has links)
How We Live Today is a collection of stories about family connections and the process of making amends to keep a family whole. The families are not just traditional families, but also arrangements constructed out of necessity, circumstance, or convenience. The title story tells how a man ends a lengthy divide with a stepmother for the sake of her, his son, and ultimately himself. We see adolescents do the right thing in their circumstances at the risk of losing peer standing or to avert future social damage. An older golfer encourages a younger golfer, easing guilt but realizing that respect for the game ties golfers together. A young professional steps outside of his bounds to help a family of necessity, a group of gay men stricken during the first AIDS outbreak. Another man erases anxiety by dismissing the differences he has perceived in his relationship with his son. And finally, a young man sinks irretrievably into self-destruction over broken family ties.

The Greatest is Love

Taylor, Leslie Charles 01 March 2018 (has links)
THE GREATEST IS LOVE is a collection of ten short stories showing the painful manifestations of romantic relationships in the lives of contemporary American characters from many walks of life. As in the stories of D.H. Lawrence, these characters are often driven towards what may be bad for them, finding that love overrides their rational thoughts. In “The Mechanic” a woman whose legal career has left her isolated becomes irresistibly attracted to her friend’s ex-husband. Three stories center on one character, Charles, whose early failures both in college and at work lead him to become a detective, only to be tempted to betray his new calling by a woman who leads him astray. As in Italo Calvino’s Difficult Loves, the stories in THE GREATEST IS LOVE combine the pain and comedy of passion. Even when it is challenging, love offers characters irresistible glimmers of hope.

Short sale restrictions : The Swedish perspective

Bodestedt, Fredrik, Andersson, William, Hjortsjö, Carl January 2009 (has links)
Background:   Problem:   Purpose:   Method:   Conclusion: Based on our findings we do not advocate short sale regulations tobe introduced on the Swedish financial market. Neither does our analysis indicate that the market performance is significantly affected by shorting, nor does restrictions work as intended which we have seen in other countries during the fall of 2008. The analysis have been drawn from four cornerstones; previousresearch, actions of other countries’, a statistical analysis and interview findings. We have examined and compiled different strategies for restricting short sales around the world as well as conducted a cross-correlation analysis to investigate if share price is related to stock loan. Furthermore we have interviewed a professional investor and a middle manager at the Swedish Financial Supervisory Board to obtain experts’ views on the subject. With background of other countries’ actions, the purpose of thisreport is to investigate why, if at all, short sale regulations should be introduced on the Swedish financial market. Is there a correlation between the number of shorted shares and thechange in overall and individual stock price? What actions have been taken by countries in Europe, Asia and the United States regarding short selling during the fall of 2008 and what is SFSB’s attitude towards the subject? Are there any benefits for the Swedish financial market from shorting regulations? In times of financial crisis short selling is often quickly blamed for price volatility and media broadcasts pleads for prohibitions and restrictions. Extensive research, however, cannot find any empirical evidence that shorting is affecting markets negatively; often it is the other way around. Sweden has been relatively liberal when it comes to shorting restrictions and even though share lending has increased since the start of the year, no actions have been taken by the Swedish Financial Supervisory Board.
