The consumer Internet in South Korea : an American's perspectiveByun, Jeffrey January 2008 (has links)
Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, June 2008. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 33-36). / This thesis will explore the consumer internet industry in South Korea from the perspective of an American with Western values and sensibilities. South Korea is widely considered to be one of the most connected and internet-savvy countries on Earth, with roughly 90% of the population having high-speed broadband access and the average Korean spending 31.2 hours viewing 4,546 web pages per month compared to 25.2 hours viewing 2,519 pages for the average user globally. Moreover, South Korean portals such as Daum and Naver are two of the most trafficked destinations on the web despite the fact that their content is only available in Korean. Consequently, South Korea has become a valuable testing ground for internet technologies and an important market that can serve as a springboard to the rest of Asia. Yet the consumer internet in South Korean retains a distinct local flavor. For better or for worse, the consumer internet industry in South Korea has been deeply influenced by Confucian principles and Korean culture. The path to success for internet firms in South Korea is often quite different than it is in the West, and foreign firms looking to establish a Korean presence need to adjust their strategies accordingly. / by Jeffrey Byun. / M.B.A.

Employee retention in the Federal Government : a case study of the United States Postal ServiceWilliamson, Jeffrey Carroll January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2012. / Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 115-117). / Following the worst financial crisis since the great depression, the United States has experienced three consecutive years of unemployment above 8%. The current economic situation has pushed the economy to the forefront of the 2012 Presidential election. At the heart this partisan economic debate is the issue regarding the size of the Federal Government. The objective of this thesis is not to debate the politics of how big the Federal Government should or should not be. I merely point to the current economic situation and the partisan debate because I believe they are masking a potential issue which will impact the efficiency and quality of the services provided by the Federal Government - the issue of employee retention. Specifically, this thesis focuses on the voluntary turnover of top performing talent. Regardless of one's beliefs regarding the size the Federal Government or what role it should play, it is hard to debate the need to employ talented, productive, and innovative leaders within the government. In this regard, the Federal Government is no different than any private business. As the world shrinks and technology rapidly changes how we live and work, the demands of managing a business or running a government have become increasingly complex. This thesis uses the United States Postal Service (USPS) as a case study to illustrate some of the employee retention challenges facing the Federal Government and how the agency has implemented policies and strategies to improve its ability to retain employees. During this difficult time in its history, it is increasingly important to attract and retain talented employees. The USPS is now facing financial uncertainty, a rapidly changing marketplace, and intense competition from the private sector for its top talent. This thesis will attempt to reconcile these and many other factors impacting turnover in the USPS and highlight what USPS is doing and recommend potential actions to improve employee retention. / by Jeffrey Carroll Williamson. / S.M.

The routes beneath the roots : a system map for prospective food innovators striving for sustainable disruption / System map for prospective food innovators striving for sustainable disruptionChkaiban, Marie January 2016 (has links)
Thesis: S.M. in Management Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2016. / Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. / Includes bibliographical references (pages 86-88). / From sci-fi food-substituting floury drinks to lab-engineered, plant blood-based patties that grill and smell just like steak, food innovation is blossoming. The modern food movement is challenging the assumptions at the root of our current food system in the face of an appalling health and environmental bill; and all of the voices in the system are implicated in this resounding trial. On the one hand, 40% of the food we grow goes to waste in a country in which two thirds of eaters are overweight or obese, prisoners outnumber farmers and all the cattle aligned head to tail could circle the earth up to 35 times. On the other hand, 2.3 billion dollars were injected in food tech in 2015 in the United States alone, to tackle these problems on the private front. But where do dollars meet flaws? What sparks innovation in food and agriculture today and what would a food innovation map look like for the United States? The hereby report presents a selective, subjective and dynamic representation of food and agriculture innovation, after eight months of immersion in the American food system as a buyer, an eater, an investigator and a narrator; all of Netflix and TED's food repertoire; thousands of pages from food, agriculture, agronomy and system thinking literature; days of cumulated conversations with prominent food thinkers and fast-food queuers alike; and 10,000+ kilometers walked, driven and flown to food talks and conferences across Boston, Cambridge, New York and San Francisco. This report explores the root causes behind the problematic symptoms of our broken food system, and the current and prospective pathways to spur innovation-driven systemic and behavioral change, in a collective effort to build a more sustainable food system. / by Marie Chkaiban. / S.M. in Management Studies

The affordability of China's residential real estate market and opportunities for property developersLam, Terence T. (Terence Ting Yin) January 2011 (has links)
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2011. / Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 67-68). / China has the largest housing market in the world and the property market continues to advance at an astonishing pace. In 2009, 22.2% of China's RMB 19.3 trillion fixed asset investment and 17.9% of foreign direct investment were invested into the real estate sector. At the same time, the highly dynamic market structure and huge regional disparities in China created mixed interpretation and confusion. Nationwide statistics blending urban and suburban prices and the indifferent treatment towards subsidized housing and private housing overshadowed the actual development on the local level. With unprecedented investment pouring into the Chinese real estate market and sky rocketing property prices in most major cities, the legendary short-seller James Chanos described the Chinese real estate sector as "Dubai times 1,000 - or worse". Yet, another American financial guru Jim Rogers openly debunked the statement from James Chanos and remained his bullish views on China. This thesis is divided into two sections. First it reviews the historical development from the Chinese property market. The paper explores the current situation of the market and focuses on the affordability comparison between the national level and the local levels. On a national level, housing prices grow at a pace similar to China's GDP growth supported by an even faster growth in income levels. Affordability ratios are in line with international standards and below the levels experienced by Japan and US during their bubble era. At the local level, different cities experienced drastic differences in price growth and supply surpluses. In some cities, even the suburban areas are beyond the affordability of an average household. In the second section, this paper explores the development of affordable housing, the new frontier of Chinese real estate market. The emergence of the affordable housing market together with new housing policies has different implications and opportunities to the incumbent property developers as well as potential low-end disruptors in China. This paper concludes with recommendations on some of the available investment options for a bearish investor in the Chinese real estate market. / by Terence T. Lam. / S.M.
