Red Towers

Kisch, Sean 01 January 2020 (has links)
Red Towers is named after Bratislava Castle in Bratislava, Slovakia. I spent the summers of 2017 and 2019 traveling to different cities in Slovakia, and since my own heritage is Slovak, I began thinking about the idea of "home." What makes a home a home? Where was home for me? Red Towers is divided into two sections. In the first section I tried to capture the feeling of excitement that comes with leaving home, exploring the unknown, and experiencing new things. The second section is much more gentle and contemplative, and expresses the longing to return home. I decided on the title Red Towers not only because of the connection to Slovakia, but also because of the power that the words convey and their metaphorical meaning. I have dedicated this piece to my mom, who created the best home a son could ask for, and continues to demonstrate an uncommon kindness and hospitality. The melody in the clarinet at the end is my melody for her.

The Hungarian Minority in Slovakia

Batonyi, Gabor January 2004 (has links)
No / The Ethnopolitical Encyclopaedia of Europe is the first work of its kind that systematically and rigorously examines the politics of ethnicity throughout the continent as a whole. Rather than indulge in a tour of Europe designed to unearth as many diverse population groups as possible, the Encyclopaedia is focused and serves as a unique data source on the continent's politically mobilised ethnic groups. In order to facilitate easy access, the various regions of Europe are assessed and then the nature of the politics of ethnicity is analysed on a country-by-country basis. The combination of incisive entries, maps, tables and easy-to-use country guides makes this an invaluable reference book for both academics and practitioners.

The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin in Spišský Štvrtok : Late Gothic architecture on the periphery

Janko, Joan Paula. January 2006 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to address the dating, attribution, patronage, formal motifs, structural solutions, stylistic associations and historical context of the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin in the Slovakian town of Spissky Stvrtok. In the course of the text, it is revealed that the structure is a contained and coherent system of architectural forms that represents an international transmission of ideas, a continuous development of the architectural vocabulary of the Gothic, and the relevance of "the periphery" to a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of the Late Middle Ages. To that end, the chapel is shown to stand as material evidence of a developed Late Gothic sensibility in the northern margins of the Kingdom of Hungary in the second half of the 15th century, of the wealth and power of the lords in that region, and of the far-reaching influence of the Viennese lodge of masons.

Vliv geografie a subsistence na distribuci haploskupin chromozomu Y v Evropě a v Africe / The impact of geography and subsistence on distribution of NRY haplogroups in Europe and Africa

Nováčková, Jana January 2016 (has links)
Y chromosome is due to its special characteristics the ideal tool of archaeogenetic studies. Its diversity is influenced by several factors and I analysed two of them (geographical location and subsistence). I generated SNPs and STRs data from several loci of samples from Slovakia (156 samples, 5 regions) and sub-Saharan Africa, where I analysed samples of sedentary farmers (481 samples, 18 regions) and nomadic pastorals (405 samples, 16 regions). Slovakia is situated at the meeting point of two migration ways. First of them was spread from the east to the west and is associated with enlargement of haplogroup R1a in Europe. The second came from the Iberian Peninsula eastward and is associated with enlargement of haplogroup R1b. Results of MDS graphs replicate the geographical map of Europe. Slovakia is situated in the middle of Russian, Balkanian and Iberian samples. Correlation between genetics and geographic distances is indicated by hierarchical AMOVA analysis and Mantel tests. Populations in sub-Saharan Africa differ from each other by the subsistence pattern. Different life style influence the diversity of the Y chromosome. Nomadic pastoralists and sedentary farmers share different haplogroups, for example, while haplogroup R1b was detected only in nomadic pastoral groups, sedentary farmers...

Konstitutionell nationalism i Östeuropa : En idéanalys av postkommunistiska konstitutioner i Östeuropa

Bragd, Andreas January 2012 (has links)
This study focuses on nationalism in Central and Eastern Europe. Anchored in theories that this region historically has been characterized by a nationalism that is based on the ethnic group rather than on liberal or civic concepts, it is the purpose of this study to explore whether these theories still apply in recent times when the region has been liberalized, for example manifested in the entry to the European Union. The research question has been tested through analysis of the constitutions of a number of Central and Eastern European countries in order to investigate what type of nationalism that the states have codified in their basic political documents. The results show that some of the states give expression to the historical ethnic nationalism in their constitutions, which indicates that the theories still are relevant.
