The cost of search and evaluation in problem-solving social networks : an experimental study

Online networks of individuals have been used to solve a number of problems in a scale that would not be possible if not within a connected, virtual and social environment such as the internet. However, the quality of solutions provided by individuals of an online network can vary significantly thus making work quality unreliable. This dissertation investigates factors that can influence the quality of the work output of individuals in online social networks. Specifically, we show that when solving tasks with small duration (under 5 minutes), also known as microtasks, individuals decision making will be strongly biased by costs of searching (and evaluating) options rather than financial or non-financial incentives. Indeed, we are able to show that we can influence individuals decisions, when solving problems, by rearranging elements visually to modify an the search sequence of an individual, be it by designing the virtual work environment or manipulating which options are first shown in non-controlled environments such as the Amazon Mechanical Turk labor market. We performed several experiments in online networks where individuals are invited to work on tasks with varying degrees of difficulty within three settings: mathematical games with objective truth (Sudoku and SAT instances), surveys with subjective evaluation (public policy polling) and labor markets (Amazon Mechanical Turk). We show that the time spent solving problems and the user interface are more relevant to the quality of work output than previous research have assumed and that individuals do not change this behavior while solving the sets of problems. Finally, to complement our study of online problem-solving, we present additional experiments in an online labor market (Amazon Mechanical Turk) that agrees with our networked experiments, shedding new light on how and why people solve problems.

Att få support eller att tolka information via telefon kan ibland vara problematiskt. Eftersom individer uppfattar och tolkar saker på olika sätt kan det vara svårt att förklara något. Genom att förklara något man ser framför sig, för någon annan, som i sin tur ska tolka och förstå vad det är som sägs, kan ibland vara problematiskt för båda parter. Syftet med denna uppsats i informatik är att testa hur en experimentuppsättning kan se ut. Experimentet går ut på att undersöka hur kommunikation kan uppstå verbalt när en person ska förklara ett skärminnehåll. Syftet är också att hjälpa kognitionsforskare här vid Karlstads universitet inför framtida studier. Experimentet är uppdelat i två delar, i del ett ska varje respondent prata för sig själv (eller för testledare). I del två finns det dels en talare, A, dels en lyssnare, B. B ska tolka vad A berättar och ska sedan placera objekt på samma sätt som A ser dem. Del två görs på två olika sätt, a) A får feedback på vad B åstadkommit, b) utan feedback.   För att undersöka hur en lämplig experimentuppsättning kan designas användes inte färdiga bildsekvenser på pappersark eller i power point. Istället används ett prototypingverktyg där bildskärmsinnehållet lätt kan ändras mellan olika pilottest och där sekvensen av bilder dessutom kan ändras eller avslutas under pågående test. Detta tillvägagångssätt är till stor hjälp för att finna en experimentform som forskarna var nöjda med. Utifrån försök med olika pilottest med fem respondenter i del ett kan man tydligt se att respondenterna var väldigt noggranna när de förklarade vilken figur som fanns var inom en ruta. Respondenterna var noga med att förklara utseende, färg och mönster. I del två var det gemensamt för de sex respondenterna som agerade talare (A) att de började förklara figurernas positioner uppe från vänstra hörnet först, t.ex. ”Högst uppe till vänster …..”. Undersökningen visar på att det tänkta experimentet behöver inledas med antingen bättre ledtext eller mer genomgång för respondenterna eftersom majoriteten av respondenterna hade svårt att uppfatta när testet startade. Ett problem med mer introduktion är att det styr väldigt starkt testdeltagarnas verbala beteende, alltså det som experimentet av det tänkta slaget ska undersöka.

Social Experiments in Innovative Environmental Management: The emergence of ecotechnology

Human production needs are met through the use of modern technology that is increasingly recognised as a threat to the planetary ecosystem and social sub-system. In light of this recognition, there is evidence that a planned transition towards more sustainable technological infrastructure is occurring across various production sectors. This change is often associated with re-orientating technology based on the concept of sustainable development and national-level strategies such as <i>ecological modernisation</i>, which prescribes phasing-out environmentally malignant conventional technology for cleaner post-industrial solutions. There is evidence, however, that a transition towards cleaner technological options is occurring at the local level. In southern Ontario, Canada ecological technology (<i>ecotechnology</i>) has been adopted in small-scale agricultural and educational facilities for the management of manure and domestic sewage. Ecotechnology is designed to meet human production requirements and to restore the environment through combining natural systems and engineered components to achieve cleaner production. Two types of ecotechnologies were investigated during this research: <i>constructed treatment wetlands</i> for the management of manure and <i>greenhouse-based biological technologies</i> for the management of domestic sewage. These options are novel and can be expected to encounter barriers resulting from a <i>selection environment</i> favouring pre-existing technological options that have previously become established. The overall objective of the research was <i>to identify key factors both driving and constraining the adoption and implementation of the ecotechnology</i> across four case studies. This objective was accomplished through employing a qualitative, collective case study approach. The case studies revealed the motivation behind the adoption of the ecotechnology arose from the environmental values of users and formed the basis for rejecting the conventional options because they were not viewed as capable of improving the environment. However, the ecotechnology also exceeded user's aesthetic and operational level expectations. Barriers to the implementation of ecotechnology were also identified. The investigation revealed the existence of a <i>perspective-gap</i> between the ecological engineering science and traditional engineering science, which constrained implementation of the ecotechnology. Skepticism was found to arise due to the unique performance parameters and <i>soft</i> operational characteristics of ecotechnology, which contrast the <i>hard</i> technological fixes that are familiar to traditional engineering science. This perspective-gap may account for the institutional inertia, which became clear after the 1996 provincial budget reductions decreased the level of support for research and environmental technology development programs in Ontario. These reductions also devolved authority for small-scale wastewater treatment to the municipal level where lack of technical expertise and reliance on standardised regulations has constrained the development of alternatives. Constructive technology assessment suggests that the development of technology must be guided in cooperative <i>social learning</i> processes capable of reflecting the needs and values of stakeholders in order to achieve beneficial social and technological change. Evidence from the case studies revealed that a significant amount of capacity was developed when stakeholders collaborated and legitimated the <i>social experiments</i> where the ecotechnology was applied. These experiments demonstrate the significance of creating settings where users, technology proponents and provincial and local approval agents can collaborate. Through collaboration, social learning can be facilitated during the development of alternative technological solutions that may be congruent with ecological modernisation and the re-orientation of technology towards options that are ecologically-oriented.
