Imagining Yunnan: the political economy of spatial relations in contemporary southwest China. / 想像云南: 当代中国西南空间关系的政治经济学 / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Digital dissertation consortium / Xiang xiang Yunnan: dang dai Zhongguo xi nan kong jian guan xi de zheng zhi jing ji xueJanuary 2011 (has links)
There is strong provincial and national agency in these imaginings, but this study argues that they have also been structured at global and regional levels by new approaches to regions, evolving understandings of the meaning and agency of borders, and the increasing influence of neoliberal views on trade, investment, and transborder and regional interactions, embraced by many in the PRC since the 1990s. The approach is also historical in the importance it attaches to the legacies of the past in understanding the present, and through its dynamic analysis of the changing constructions of Yunnan's positioning over time and across space. This informs the way that the thesis speaks to wider questions of the spatial structures and scales of political economy, the theoretical and empirical problems to which this study aims to make a contribution. / This is a study of the political economy of the production of spatial relations of the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan. It identifies a dynamic process of imaginings since the early 1990s involving the repositioning of Yunnan from periphery of the People's Republic of China (PRC) to the centre of various regional constructs, yet without compromising its national belonging. These imaginings have found expression in policy statements and provincial narratives, Yunnan's participation in transborder regional institutions, the development of infrastructure networks through the province, and growth in transborder trade and investment. They have been accompanied by social and cultural change across and around borders, and experienced differently at various localities within the province. In the 1990s these imaginings were dominated by economic conceptions of development, looking to regional integration and engagement beyond the PRC's borders. These have remained strong drivers since. However, especially during the 2000s, other social, political and non-traditional security concerns have increasingly come to the fore, in turn strengthening Yunnan's national belonging. / Summers, Timothy Andrew. / "December 2010." / Adviser: Shaogang Wang. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-04, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2011. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 354-377). / Electronic reproduction. The empty space.Mataraga, Francesca, School of Arts, UNSW January 2007 (has links)
The Empty Space project aims to explore the interior and exterior space of an object through the use of Perspex. The solidity of the concrete or minimalist art object and the space that it physically occupies will be challenged by the use of visually ambiguous material. Physically solid yet visually transparent or reflective, perspex challenges our perception of solidity - what is internal and what is external. It is by nature a subversive and ambiguous material. The visual transparency of the material contradicts the physical presence of the object it creates. It creates a play between presence and absence. It is this spatial contradiction that this project exploits in order to create physical and visual tension. The solid physicality of the objects will directly draw on the tradition of concrete art and the language of minimalism. The visual transparency of the material will however, subvert this language both conceptually and literally. This will make the relationship between internal and external space more complex, challenging the physicality of the art object and questioning the nature of solidity.

Command of the space contention ¡XChina¡¦s space warfare development studyLi, Chin-hsin 16 July 2005 (has links)
The waves of military innovation have changed the principle and concept of traditional military warfare. The command of the space, succeeding the power of the land in the early days, the Sea superiority in the 18th century, the command of land in the 19th century, the Air superiority and the Information dominance in the 20th century has become a totally new concept of military command. The space warfare, for the purpose of controlling the space, finally comes on the stage.
Under the influence of the competitors between the U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. in the field of military prowess, China started its development of space technology in 1956. After 50 years passed, Chain has become a nation of potential space warfare. Its prowess in space warfare is found on its advanced and firmly established space science and technology. Following the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. China has build up its space army which aims at seizing the dominion of the future space warfare. Evidently, every great nation, for the purposes of gaining supreme authority in the warfare in this century, has fully engaged in building up its prowess in the command of the space.
This essay aims at study China¡¦s development in space warfare which is founded on the concept of the scramble for the command of the space. Such studies help to understand China¡¦s recognition of space warfare, its development of space army, its research and development in space science and technology, its present structure and equipment for space warfare and its ambitions and directions in the future space warfare . The study of this essay, which are based on several perspectives, will help to provide a referential background for the observation of the future development of space warfare of China.
