Doppler Extraction for a Demand Assignment Multiple Access Service for NASA's Space Network

Currently, a user's spacecraft is incapable of receiving service unless prior scheduling occurred with the control center. NASA is interested in efficiently utilizing the time between scheduled services. Thus, a demand assignment multiple access (DAMA) service study was conducted to provide a solution. The DAMA service would allow the user's spacecraft to initiate a service request. The control center could then schedule the next available time slot upon owner approval. In this paper, the basic DAMA service request design and integration is presented.

Remote Control Multiple Mobile Target System with CDMA

This paper proposes a communication scheme to remote control multiple mobile targets using Coded-Division Multiple Access(CDMA) technique. It's feasibility, advantage and shortcoming are analyzed. Moreover, the key techniques of Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum(DS/SS) system, i.e. the correlation detection and delay lock-on techniques, are studied and stimulated on the experimental model. The results of theoretical analysis show that the CDMA system has the peculiar advantage over the conventional multiple access system, such as FDMA and TDMA.

DOPPLER SHIFTED SPREAD SPECTRUM CARRIER RECOVERY USING REAL-TIME DSP TECHNIQUES

If the satellite state vector is unknown then some estimate must be formed of the Doppler-shifted carrier frequency. One elementary technique is to examine the signal spectrum and base the estimate on the dominant spectral component. If, however, the carrier is spread (as in most satellite communications) this technique may fail unless the chip rate-to-data rate ratio (processing gain) associated with the carrier is small. In this case, there may be enough spectral energy to allow peak detection against a noise background. In this paper, we present a method to estimate the frequency (without knowledge of the Doppler shift) of a spread-spectrum carrier assuming a small processing gain and binary-phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation. Our method relies on a simple, averaged discrete Fourier transform along with peak detection. We provide simulation results indicating the accuracy of this method. In addition, we will describe an all-digital hardware design based around a Motorola DSP56303 and high-speed A/D which implements this technique in real-time. The hardware design is to be used in NMSU’s implementation of NASA’s demand assignment, multiple access (DAMA) service.

PREDETECTION RECORDING TECHNIQUES FOR GPS SIGNALS

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 13-16, 1986 / Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada / Predetection recording of spread-spectrum (SS) signals such as GPS transmissions is a desirable objective for both users and developers of equipment designed to receive such signals. (GPS user-equipment development is a lengthy process during which signal simulators are only partially useful.) Upon playback, GPS signals are used by the same or modified receivers so that acquisition, processing, detection and tracking loops can be altered to optimize the receiver parameters. Development of predetect SS signal recording systems is difficult to achieve in practice. Such systems not only must be of suitable phase linearity to preserve the signal content to be extracted but sometimes must also preserve the exact signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) characteristics of the recorded signals. Existing conventional test equipment is unsuitable for deriving value judgments of the quality of a predetect recording system’s output because the SS signal has a negative SNR. This paper reveals that it is possible to use, for this purpose, tape recorders now available on many test ranges in combination with auxiliary equipment similar to that designed for the U.S. Navy’s TRIDENT Program (recording C/A-code data from in-flight missile translators). The basic techniques are described in some detail to enable potential users to understand the necessary equipment concepts and evaluate the author’s approach in terms of their own applications.

License-free communication using digital mobile radio standards and spread spectrum

The concept of using spread spectrum and open radio standards to provide license-free, short range Peer-to-Peer (P2P) communication is explored. This research makes use of the Time Compression Overlap Add (TC-OLA) algorithm to transparently spread the spectrum of the Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) standard; this allows for reuse of existing hardware, software, and expertise relating to this well established protocol. Initial high level hardware designs of a communication device established the need to implement a proof of concept system which could be validated against Radio Frequency (RF) regulations. This proof of concept system was constructed using a hardware implementation of DMR processed through custom TC-OLA blocks in GNU Radio (GR). A spectral and performance analysis of this system was performed, showing that this approach has several benefits over existing license free communication options. / Graduate / 2020-07-11

Novas demandas por serviços de valor agregado têm surgido constantemente em sistemas de telefonia celular. Somente o tráfego de voz não tem sido mais suficiente para suprir as necessidades dos usuários, que hoje clamam também por serviços de dados que sejam rápidos, eficientes, baratos, com mobilidade e que atendam às mais diversas aplicações, como correio eletrônico, vídeo-conferência ou acesso à Internet. Este trabalho apresenta um método de determinação das taxas mínimas necessárias nos canais de tráfego para atender a essas aplicações. Utilizando-se da tecnologia CDMA2000, será feita uma análise do impacto na interface aérea da alocação dos canais de tráfego determinados. A mesma análise será feita nos casos em que se determinem taxas mínimas e/ou máximas alocadas para cada usuário, comparando-se também tempo necessário para a transmissão dos dados, eficiência na célula (taxa útil / taxa total transmitida), etc. As conclusões deste trabalho podem indicar estratégias para se atender aos usuários de serviços de dados em redes de telefonia móvel sob diferentes aspectos, como melhor relação custo-benefício, nichos específicos (concentrar-se em serviços que demandem maiores ou menores taxas de transmissão, por exemplo) ou até mesmo prever a quantidade de recursos de rede necessária para atender a uma determinada base de usuários. / Mobile telephony systems have been constantly asked for new demands of value added services. Voice traffic only is not enough anymore to support the new needs of mobile users because nowadays they ask for fast, cost-efficient, cheap and mobile services to support electronic mail, videoconference or Internet access. This work presents a method of how to determine minimum rates on traffic channels to support these services. Considering CDMA2000 technology, an impact analysis will be made in the air interface for these specific traffic channels. Same analysis will be made when minimum or maximum rates are reserved for each user, also comparing the time needed for data transmission, efficiency of the cell (useful rate / maximum rate) and others. The conclusions of this work may allow strategies to support data users in mobile telephony networks in such different ways, as better cost-effective solution, specific segment of the market (i.e., to concentrate in services with higher or lower transmission rates) or even to foresee the amount of resources needed in a network to support a forecasted number of users.

Hydroakustisk kommunikation med bandspridningsteknik / Hydroacoustic communication with spread spectrum

<p>This thesis investigates techniques for stealth hydroacoustic communication using spread spectrum. The Swedish naval defense organisations have a vision that all their units should be able to communicate with each other, even between underwater vehicles. But the properties of water makes it a complex channel to use for wireless communications. Radiomagnetic waves have very limited range in water, therefore acoustic waves are used. </p><p>In this report the basics of wireless communication systems are described including source coding, channel coding, modulation techniques as well as different techniques for spread spectrum. The fundamental principle for all spread spectrum systems is to use more bandwidth than necessary to spread the signal energy in the frequency spectrum. This limits the data rate but results in a robust communication link which is difficult to detect, intercept and to jam. </p><p>In addition to the theoretical background, this thesis also gives a brief description of a Matlab system and a VHDL-system that was developed during the project. Finally the results of this project are presented and some suggestions of further developments are given.</p>

Handoff issues in a transmit diversity system

This thesis addresses handoff issues in a WCDMA system with space-time block coded transmit antenna diversity. Soft handoff has traditionally been used in CDMA systems because of its ability to provide an improved link performance due to the inherent macro diversity. Next generation systems will incorporate transmit diversity schemes employing several transmit antennas at the base station. These schemes have been shown to improve downlink transmission performance especially capacity and quality. This research investigates the possibility that the diversity obtained through soft handoff can be compensated for by the diversity obtained in a transmit diversity system with hard handoff. We analyze the system for two performance measures, namely, the probability of bit error and the outage probability, in order to determine whether the improvement in link performance, as a result of transmit diversity in a system with hard handoffs obviates the need for soft handoffs.
