Meeting Your Depth

30021222@student.murdoch.edu.au, Gerrard George Shaw January 2003 (has links)
As a member of the Stolen Generations, my objective and design in this dissertation is part of a larger project, involving the reclamation of my Aboriginal identity, taken from me as a child. I will attempt to do this through researching the lives of my grandfather George Shaw and his daughters, Ruby Janie and Maggie. Through a reading of files and documents held by the Department of Indigenous Affairs, Perth, I will show how the 1905 Aborigines Protection Act impacted on the lives of the Shaw family, and on all Aboriginal people who lived under this oppressive regime. Through the disclosure of what life was like for me as a child removed, I attempt to identify the shameful lack of care by the authorities concerned with my removal. The rational behind this piece of work is based on a desire to further my own personal journey of healing by linking my story to the larger Shaw story.

The watchdog role of newspapers: Newspaper coverage of Sinclair Broadcasting's announcement to air a one-sided documentary right before the 2004 presidential election.

Weiderman, Greta Kaye 01 December 2009 (has links)
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Greta K. Weiderman, for the Master of Arts degree in Mass Communication and Media Arts, presented on Aug. 21, 2009, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: THE WATCHDOG ROLE OF NEWSPAPERS: NEWSPAPER COVERAGE OF SINCLAIR BROADCASTING'S ANNOUNCEMENT TO AIR A ONE-SIDED DOCUMENTARY RIGHT BEFORE THE 2004 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. William Babcock This thesis is a content analysis examining newspaper coverage of Sinclair Broadcasting's announcement that it planned to air a program titled "Stolen Honor: Wounds that Never Heal" 13 days before the November 2004 presidential election. Sinclair Broadcast Group ordered its 61 stations to preempt regular programming and run the show, which attacked then presidential candidate John Kerry's activism against the Vietnam War (Jensen, 2004). The film was to be presented as news programming. This study examines how 41 newspapers in cities with Sinclair television stations covered the announcement to run the "Stolen Honor" documentary and the situation following it in news stories, editorials and columns. It also examines if the ownership or circulation of the newspapers was related to the way they covered the controversy and whether these newspapers served their watchdog functions. The results indicated that there was no relationship between a newspaper's performance of the watchdog role, as measured by the watchdog index, and its circulation or ownership. But the study did find, however, that as a whole, the newspapers performed their watchdog role.

Identifying Financial Frauds on Darkweb

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Data breaches have been on a rise and financial sector is among the top targeted. It can take a few months and upto a few years to identify the occurrence of a data breach. A major motivation behind data breaches is financial gain, hence most of the data ends up being on sale on the darkweb websites. It is important to identify sale of such stolen information on a timely and relevant manner. In this research, we present a system for timely identification of sale of stolen data on darkweb websites. We frame identifying sale of stolen data as a multi-label classification problem and leverage several machine learning approaches based on the thread content (textual) and social network analysis of the user communication seen on darkweb websites. The system generates alerts about trends based on popularity amongst the users of such websites. We evaluate our system using the K-fold cross validation as well as manual evaluation of blind (unseen) data. The method of combining social network and textual features outperforms baseline method i.e only using textual features, by 15 to 20 % improved precision. The alerts provide a good insight and we illustrate our findings by cases studies of the results. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Computer Science 2018
