A Mindlin finite strip for the analysis of rectangular containers and continuous plates with elastically restrained supportsCanisius, Tantirimudalige Don Gerard January 1990 (has links)
A first order shear deformable finite strip with support displacements is introduced. Both nonlinear geometric effects and initial deflections may be considered. Support displacements are introduced by the use of a set of basis functions for support degrees of freedom. Each basis function is obtained by the solution of a Timoshenko beam under a unit displacement of the respective support degree of freedom. They are combined with the standard beam functions. The new finite strip can be applied to the analysis of rectangular containers and continuous plates with elastically restrained supports. The elastic restraints are introduced with independent springs acting along supports and nodal lines. The finite strip is extended to the analysis of unsymmetrically laminated clamped composite plates by the definition of equivalent elasticity modulii to find the basis functions.
The new finite strip is used in the analysis of rectangular containers. It is shown that compressive horizontal forces exist in the walls of flexible containers filled with a liquid. This can only be predicted by the simultaneous consideration of the movement of the wall corners and the geometric nonlinearities, as can be done with the present model.
A 'mode transition finite strip' which has unequal numbers of modes in the nodal lines is introduced. It can be used to economize the finite strip analysis of plates with loads that need a large number of modes, but spread only across a few of the strips. Also a study of the determination of transverse shear stresses by the use of the equilibrium equations and the displacement solution is made, resulting in some important and interesting observations. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Civil Engineering, Department of / Graduate

Finite element analysis during strip rolling and determination of width spread equationGuo, Jin-Cheng 01 September 2010 (has links)
Rolling technology can control the thickness precisely. But it isn¡¦t available in width control. FEM software DEFORM 3D is adopted to simulate one stand of the hot finishing rolling process using carbon steel as sheet material. Stress, strain and width spread are discussed. Regression analysis is used to find an empirical equation for rolling load and width spread. Experiment and simulation of cold strip rolling using aluminum as sheet material are conducted, discussing the width spread and detail of width transformation in DEFORM 3D.From the comparisons between analytical and experimental width spread, the analytical model and prediction equation are validated.

New Design of Hot Strip Mill Runout TableKratky, Miroslav 03 1900 (has links)
The work presented herein describes the production of hot strip with special attention to the runout table. Because of its high capital and operating costs, a new principle in conveying the strip using an air cushion and a new cooling system for strip cooling have been proposed. Information given here is nearly all from available literature and the author's own experience with Hot Strip Mill production problems. To support the idea of using an air cushion for strip conveying, experimental equipment was designed and built which confirmed the feasibility of the method. A new cooling system was also proposed to meet the ever increasing requirements for better mechanical properties of hot strip. Runout table design application may serve as a guideline in designing new Hot Strip Mill runout table. / Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

The design of catch bench geometry in surface mines to control rockfallEvans, Christopher Lyle, 1961- January 1989 (has links)
This study proposes a rational process that can be used by the mining engineer to control rockfall by the design of catch bench geometry in surface mines. The problem of rockfall in surface mines is defined and factors causing rockfall are identified. Four civil engineering models that predict rockfall motion are presented and compared to rockfall field tests from eight different test sites. Based on these results, a computer program was written that combines aspects of the two best models. The Ritchie empirical model provides the most conservative result of catch bench width and berm height necessary to contain rockfall on mine slopes. The Colorado Rockfall Simulation Program is used to check the reliability of the design and to permit selection of the minimum catch bench geometry to insure both mine safety and the most economic slope angles.
