Understanding the Integrative Role of an Academic Library for Undergraduate Student Workers

Weston, Charles W. 16 May 2008 (has links)
This study explored how undergraduate library student workers at an urban, 4-year public institution perceived their work experiences in an academic library as contributing to their social and academic integration in college. Tinto's (1993) model on student departure formed the basis for this study where academic and social integration work together to influence institutional commitments ultimately leading to the decision to remain or leave the college. Undergraduate library student workers from various library departments were interviewed and it is from these interviews that a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of an academic library's effect on undergraduate library student workers was gained. The study revealed that the undergraduate library student workers perceived experiencing many socially integrative and academically integrative experiences which they would not have had were they not employed in an academic library. After the data are discussed, the theoretical implications, policy implications, and suggestions for further research are offered.

Cultivating Fallow Fields: A Program to Train Undergraduate Student Workers to Be Effective Communicators of Health Information Skills in an Academic Medical Library

Wallace, Rick L., Woodward, Nakia J., Taylor, Recia 18 May 2014 (has links)
Objectives: The goal of this project is to: (1) identify key concepts public services workers need to know; (2) conduct a short training session with each worker; and (3) measure changes by a pre- and post-test. The training session focused on specific tasks that the worker may be asked to do in the course of their work. Methods: East Tennessee State University (ETSU) librarians created a written test that covered specific library resources, policies, etc. The test was pilot tested. Each of the 7 student workers plus 2 regular public service workers were given a 1-hour one-on-one training class. A pre-and post- training exam was given. The results were then scored on a scale of 102. Results: A paired t-test of the pre- and post-test showed a statistically significant difference at the 0.001 level. Conclusions: We have mainly used undergraduate students to "baby sit" our library's front service desk. If they can be trained effectively, their (and our) value to patrons increases greatly. Often they are the main contact with patrons.

Both the classified and classifying goods as well as the hierarchical and hierarchizing goods create a cultural necessity and legitimize the dominant culture. This study is based on Bourdieu’s theory of practice. It analyses the meaning of family, school and work for these young workers when drawing up their values and choices (habitus), and recognizes in the type of work that they carry out (domestic help and sales women), the fundamental structure in the formation of their likes, their life style, and, especially, of the meaning that fashion in clothes acquires, depending on the place in the social strata where they find themselves. / Discute-se a relação que jovens estudantes trabalhadoras estabelecem com a modavestimenta, sendo que existe um campo (da moda) com suas especificidades e estratégias construindo valores e a crença em seus bens. Bens classificados e classificantes, hierarquizados e hierarquizantes, criando a necessidade cultural e legitimando a cultura dominante.
