SUBSURFACE CHARACTERIZATION AND SEUQENCE STRATIGRAPHY OF LATE MISSISSIPPIAN STRATA IN THE BLACK WARRIOR BASIN, ALABAMA AND MISSISSIPPI

Kidd, Carrie A. 01 January 2008 (has links)
A depositional framework for the Mississippian (Chesterian) Pride Mountain Formation/Hartselle Sandstone clastic tongue and the lower Bangor Limestone carbonate ramp in the Black Warrior basin, Mississippi and Alabama, is constructed from approximately 250 geophysical well logs, 15 well cuttings descriptions, and outcrop data. The framework is based upon cross sections, isopach maps, and transgressive-regressive sequence stratigraphy. The Lowndes-Pickens synsedimentary fault block controlled sediment dispersal in during Pride Mountain/Hartselle deposition. The basin filled from the southwest, which pushed the depocenter northeastward during Hartselle deposition. The Hartselle sub-basin is composed of the Hartselle barrier-island and back-barrier deposits to the southwest, including the Pearce siltstone. The Pearce siltstone, a previously unidentified subsurface unit, was deposited in a restricted environment controlled by the Lowndes-Pickens block. The Pride Mountain, Hartselle, and lower Bangor succession contains one complete and one partial transgressive-regressive stratigraphic sequence. An exposure surface at the top of the Hartselle Sandstone and Monteagle Limestone is a maximum regressive surface. The upper part of the Bangor ramp is highly cyclic and grades from oolitic shoal deposits southwestward into a condensed section, the Neal black shale, at the toe of the ramp. The entire thickness of the lower Bangor is equivalent to the Neal shale.

The transformation in the geographic field allows modifications in the environment, contributing to the degradation of considerable parts of the Hydro Resources, and, as a result, an environmental changing in different scenarios. The management of hydro resources has patterns, objectives and goals to be accomplished, based on technical aspects, juridical norms, plans and programs which reveal a set of intentions, decisions, and recommendations from the governmental participants and from society as well. Besides the political and social importance of the water as resource, the management of hydro resources adds values and empowers our country in the international scenario when dealing with issues related to the environment. The social-environmental diagnosis of an under-basin, for instance, is a relevant instrument of strategic management, helping the monitoring, demonstrating aspects of the field, qualifying relevant indicators below the social-economical and environmental prism, providing an entire view of the social-environmental conditions of a specific working universe. The under-basins Poços / Queimados dry an area of 177,70 km2, being totally integrated to the hydrographic basin of Guandu, which are part of the Hydrographic Region II, contributing to the Sepetiba Bay, presenting relevant characteristics about the management of hydro resources, since it deals with polluter basins, which evidences the need of actions that mitigate all over the region. The elaboration of the socio-environmental diagnosis of the under-basins of the Poços and Queimados rivers in the Queimados town in the state of Rio de Janeiro, having as fundamental data the use of social-environmental indicators, done from the analyses of data / information from IBGE and CIDE in the scales of analyses of the town and the under-basins. Bibliographic researches involving the review of the literature about the management of hydro-resources, historic, social-economical aspects and the main public politics of the Queimados town were done based on searches on the World Wide Web and in Federal, Estate and Town Institution, and in college libraries. Visits to the Urbanism and Environment Secretary, as well as to the Rural Development and Agricultural ones in Queimados and Comitê Guandu were done, as well as the monitoring of the acts of the participants in the activities of hydro resources. Based on the modeling and implementation of the Basis and the Data from Queimados the programs Arc View 3.2 and 9.0 were utilized (developed by the Environmental System Research Institute ESRI), as well as the digital file from the 2000/IBGE Census (Territorial paths county and variable sectors). The assessment of the potential of the town about the issue related to the hydro-resources made by the governmental and social participants was realized through the analyses of the Plan of the Bay of the Guandu and Plan of the Town and of the interest of the civilians about the under-basins. Regarding the observed characteristics, and based on the data and the analyzed documents, it is concluded that the Town of Queimados participates on the patters of the Strategic Plan of Hydro-Resources valid by its Directive Plan through politics that reach the regional integration, allowing measures that foster improvement in the quality of life of the population of the under-basins Poços / Queimados and, as a consequence, of the entire population fueled by the water originated from the basin of the river Guandu, proving that the consolidation of the process of Integrated Management of Hydro Resources is possible with the integration of the society, the government and the users, since these seek for a unique objective.

Comprehensive fluid saturation study for the Fula North field Muglad Basin, Sudan

Altayeb, Abdalmajid I. H. January 2016 (has links)
>Magister Scientiae - MSc / This study has been conducted to accurately determine fluid saturation within Fula sub-basin reservoirs which is located at the Southern part of the Republic of Sudan. The area is regarded as Shaly Sand Reservoirs. Four deferent shaly sand lithofacies (A, B, C, D) have been identified. Using method based on the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), the core surrounding facies, within Fula reservoirs were identified. An average shale volume of 0.126 within the studied reservoirs was determined using gamma ray and resistivity logs. While average porosity of 26.7% within the reservoirs was determined using density log and the average core grain density. An average water resistivity of 0.8 Ohm-m was estimated using Pickett plot method. While formation temperature was estimated using the gradient that constrained between surface and bottom hole temperature. Water saturation was determined using Archie model and four shaly sand empirical models, the calculation was constrained within each facies zone to specify a model for each facies, and another approach was used to obtain the water saturation based on Artificial Neural Networks. The net pay was identified for each reservoir by applying cut-offs on permeability 5 mD, porosity 16%, shale volume 0.33, and water saturation 0.65. The gross thickness of the reservoirs ranges from 7.62m to 19.85m and net pay intervals from 4.877m to 19.202m. The study succeeded in establishing water saturation model for the Fula sub-basin based on neural networking which was very consistent with the core data, and hence has been used for net pay determination.

Provenance and depositional environments of early cretaceous sediments in the Bredasdorp Sub-basin, offshore South Africa: an integrated approach

Hendricks, Mogammad Yaaseen January 2020 (has links)
>Magister Scientiae - MSc / Southern offshore basins of South Africa are well known as potential provinces of hydrocarbon exploration and production. The complex nature of the Bredasdorp sub-basin’s syn-rift architecture (transform fault system) can have adverse effects on reservoir distribution due to periodic local and regional uplift of horsts and grabens. This present investigation focusses on an integrated approach of the 1AT1-V horizon or early Cretaceous sediments in the Bredasdorp sub-basin to identify the depositional environment and provenance of these sediments as well as their role in regionally complex compositional heterogeneities associated with the late stage rifting of Gondwana break-up. An integrated seismic, sedimentological (including petrography and geochemistry) and ichnologic analysis of the 1AT1-V horizon sediments showed an overall lower regressive element complex assemblage set and an upper transgressive element complex assemblage set that occurred as a >120m thick succession. The analysis identified a mixed-energy deltaic succession followed by an estuarine succession. The 1AT1-V interval (late syn-rift) consisted of nine sedimentary facies associations (and associated petrofacies) on a dipslope setting with variations occurring along the strike and the downdip depositional slope areas. Two overall sequences were identified as a lower regressive and upper transgressive sequence (Element complex assemblage sets). The regressive sequence consisted of middle to distal delta front lobe fringes, hyperpycnal event beds (sourced from basement highs), offshore migrating tidal bars (and associated inter-bar regions), distal mouth bars, terminal distributary channels (and associated inter-terminal distributary regions). The distal delta plain to proximal delta front consisted of interdistributary bays, distributary channels, crevasse splay sub-deltas, mouth bars, tidal flats and offshore embayments. In the laterally isolated depocenter, these deposits also consisted of basement high slopes with upliftment of the basement highs leading to proximal/central embayment to regressive shoreface/foreshore environments. These sequences consisted generally of low diversity and intensities (impoverished abundances) of trace fossils. The paleoclimate inference from this sequence indicates a humid climate with intermediate degrees of weathering intensities (possibly fluctuating arid-humid conditions). The transgressive sequence consisted of estuarine sedimentation with the occurrence of tidal sand ridges and compound dune fields, embayment facies and tidal bars. These sequences consisted of relatively higher ichnodiversities and intensities than their relative regressive sequences. The paleoclimate inference during these times consisted of more arid to semi-arid settings with low degrees of weathering in the source terrain. Local tectonic upliftment and subsidence, with exposed basement highs, gave rise to differential process regimes (tidal, wave and fluvial) and hence depositional facies in the diachronous updip/downdip areas (spatial) and within-stratigraphic (temporal) variations. There are several modern analogues that are similar to the 1AT1-V horizon sequence and they are the Mahakam, Ganges-Brahmaputra, Po, Burdekin deltaic and Satpara lake environments Compaction and dissolution diagenetic features as well as transportation were responsible for the major compositional heterogeneities concerning the reservoir quality and distribution. Proximal and distal sources were identified with first cycle and polycyclic sediments being deposited in the northern and southern part of the basin during the late stages of rifting in the Bredasdorp sub-basin. The provenance lithology has been identified as recycled sedimentary rocks (and their meta-equivalents) with an ultimate source terrain that was largely felsic in nature (Cape granite suite). The northern part of the studied section is suggested to have received sediments from the main metasedimentary rocks of the Cape fold belt (including the Table Mountain Group and Bokkeveld Group) whereas the southern sections received more sediments from the basement highs (recycled Malmesbury Group (and Pre-Cape sediments) and Cape granite suite), which is further supported by seismic data. Provenance analysis revealed that the Cape Fold belt (most recent collision) was possibly a provenance terrain but overprinting of several collisions are also acknowledged. The tectonic setting was envisaged to be of a rifted margin during the break-up of Gondwana. This compositional heterogeneity due to facies and provenance-related terrains had major consequences to the reservoir quality and distribution from the northern part to the southern part of the studied section

Justino, Dayvisson January 2016 (has links)
The sub-basins Rincón Blanco and Cerro Puntudo are depocenter belonging to the northern part of the Cuyo Basin, exposed in an allochthonous terrane of Laurentia that was added to the Gondwana protomargin and now exposed in the Precordillera Argentina. The rift basin was filled predominantly of pyroclastic and continental clastic sediments, and is composed of many asymmetric grabens half-linked by accommodation zones. U-Pb and Lu-Hf zircon isotope analyses were carried out in the basement units and volcanoclastic rocks and tuffs of both Triassic sub-basins. Basement rocks were dated at 269.9±2.9 Ma with Hf model ages 1.34 to 1.60 Ga. The volcanoclastic rocks contain zircons crystallized from 238 Ma to 1433 Ma with main peak at Permian-Triassic and Stenian (1.0 to 1.2 Ga). The Triassic rhyolite and tuffs formed between 246 and 230 Ma and have Hf model ages ranging from 1.02 to 1.50 Ga. Indeed, the volcanoclastic rocks present dominant Mesoproterozoic ages, mostly correlated to the Grenvillian. Some zircon grains show Hf Paleoproterozoic model ages which are interpreted to be part of Gondwana cratonic areas. The presence of dominant Mesoproteorzoic favored the hypotheses of a Grevillian basement for the related acid magmatism of the Cuyo Basin and allocthonous Cuyan Terrane.
