Promoting success at school: a case study of a nurture group intervention

Vince, Anita Jane January 2007 (has links)
This case study was based on a programme that followed the Nurture Group concept in a Secondary School in New Zealand. The Success at School (SAS) programme was based within the school complex and consisted of a home classroom where students were provided with both an academic and social/ life skills programme. The nine selected students were all failing academically and socially within the Year 9 cohort. Academically, all students made some small gains in their literacy and numeracy skills and also on task behaviour. Socially, small gains were made by most students in their positive interactions with others and in decreasing their absences, suspensions, referrals from class and lateness to school. Eight of the nine students indicated an attachment/ trust relationship with their teacher and/ or teacher aide. However it is not clear if the small gains that were made by most of the students can be directly attributed to the Nurture Group concept. The small group size, 1:1 teaching, individualised learning programmes and the introduction of a social skills programme may also have contributed to the small academic and social gains the students made. This case study provides an insight into the adaptation of a United Kingdom (UK) primary school Nurture Group model to a New Zealand secondary school setting.

Pojetí úspěšnosti ředitele školy a charakteristiky úspěšných ředitelů škol / Approach to evaluation of fruitfulness of the director of a school and ratings of successful school directors

Bernasová, Jana January 2015 (has links)
The diploma Thesis stems from the finding that the human behaviour is a combined result of the push from outer environment and the human personality. The theoretical part of the study is based on the scientific literature, on documents dealing with the social standing of a school director in the society, and on the research studies dealing with the director's personality. It treats the characterisation of the personality, personal typology, properties and motivations. It brings information about the present-day concept of the success. Primarily, the attention is payed to the directors' competency a their roles in the management of the school. The research part of the diploma Thesis deals with the question of personal prerequisites and competencies, as they were found on the basis of quentionairies and data obtained from individual directors, who perform their leading role in the real environment of schools, and from the founders of these schools located on the territory of the capital of Prague. The main result of the Thesis is a summary of prerequisites needed to a successful school management from the point of view of the director's personality. It stems from the finding of what the directors themselves rate as the fruitfulness in the area of professional school management as well as from the...

From the wattle and daub house to children of PhDs: school trajectory of generations of Japanese descendants (from the 1950s to the 1990s)

Shibata, Hiromi 23 June 2009 (has links)
This thesis was meant to investigate one of the outstanding Japanese characteristic: the effort to educate their children. The data investigated was based on the accounts of the school trajectories which were chosen by means of half-structured interviews and of groups of parents and pupils who belonged to families of Japanese origin, from different ages that went to school after the Second World War. The research was done between 2005 and 2008, in São Paulo. 49 people were interviewed: the parents and their children, the directors and the teachers. We decided to develop the research with some groups of ex-students of Japanese descendent from Colégio Bandeirantes (SP), trying to examine the relationship between family and school, as well as the success in school of the Japanese ethnic group. In essence, the thesis was based on an approach that took into consideration the historical context and how the individuals were set within such spaces, in order to understand the school trajectory of the students and the ways of domestic transmission of the cultural capital. In order to base our hypothesis we made reference to Pierre Bourdieu for the possibilities of interpretation offered by the concept of habitus, cultural capital and social capital. The analysis of the trajectories allowed us to verify a family dynamic guided to the catering of the challenges of the school system that left little opportunity to the evocation of the Japanese tradition.
