Women¡¦s Roles in Taiwanese New Cinema: After Twenty Years

Chang, Te-Chuan 18 January 2006 (has links)
This paper conducts a research on the movies chosen from the genre of ¡§Taiwanese New Cinema,¡¨ including ¡§Ah Fei,¡¨ ¡§Osmanthus Alley,¡¨ ¡§Kuei-mei, a Woman,¡¨ ¡§Somewhere My Love,¡¨ ¡§The Woman of Wrath,¡¨ and ¡§Rouge of the North.¡¨ The results of this research are drawn from the data of the in-depth interviews. The audience, such as script writers and directors, and advocates of women¡¦s movement with high educational background and socio-economic status, are interviewed, and these contents are analyzed. Due to various identities of the interviewees, who are both encoders and decoders, the existent theoretical framework is inadequate to explain the phenomena under research. However, according to Hall¡¦s Encoding/Decoding Theory, another way of interpretation, i.e., the ¡§Suggestive Interpretation,¡¨ has been added. It suggests that the script writers and directors should not be confined to the original framework and that they should take the initiative to provide their own opinions. All the possibilities of decoding can thus be included in a more comprehensive way. The ¡§Tilt Theory¡¨ in the study of marriage relationship assumes that only when the relationship has ups and downs like a tilt, can it last long. The conclusion suggests that modern women in Taiwan should be confident, continuously strive to achieve their goal, not let themselves down and do whatever they want to do, so as to become the master of their own life.

Corporate Social Responsibility into the 21st century : Brewing a better future?

Hirschstein, Nick January 2015 (has links)
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), a field still under development, has already seen different phases. With new technological advancements and the demand for ethical business growing –how has history affected the theory and practice in this field? Is Corporate Social Responsibility moving into new directions, and how do global players deal with challenges in the field while trying to stay ahead of their competition? Interests and efforts in Corporate Social Responsibility are seemingly growing, but does this also mean that sustainable development is progressing alongside these efforts? This research will focus firstly on the global historical development of the field. This will then be continued with an analysis of Corporate Social Responsibility programs of selected global beer brewing corporations where CSR and Sustainable Development has become a main focus for the development of the industry. . Common traits, strengths and weaknesses will be identified through this analysis in order to build a suggested framework for Corporate Social Responsibility that aims for an ethical and economically responsible sustainable development. With this process and eventual framework, this thesis aims to contribute to close the gap between how CSR is communicated to the public, and how it is perceived. This in order to critically assess the potential of CSR in the future.

EFFECT OF SIGNAGE AND SUGGESTIVE SELLING ON SALES OF HEALTHY FOOD OPTIONS IN A UNIVERSITY SETTING

Hoffman, Ashley Lynn 01 August 2011 (has links)
Making healthy eating choices as a college student can be challenging and the transition from adolescence to adulthood can be associated with an increased likelihood of obesity. Studies have shown that college students have poor eating habits and frequent consumption of fast food meals. Studies have reported menu labeling to be effective in influencing college students' purchasing decisions. During the fall 2009 semester, the Saluki Select Healthy Eating Program was implemented in the Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) Student Center to aid college students and the public in general to make healthier menu choices. The purpose of this research study was to compare and analyze marketing techniques for promoting and selling these healthy menu options at the SIUC Student Center. Results showed that signage and suggestive selling increased awareness of Saluki Select foods. Signage and suggestive selling, however, were not found statistically significant for increasing sales of Saluki Select foods. These findings are important in the planning and implementation of marketing strategies on healthy food options in university dining centers, foodservice operations, and restaurants. This study can add to the current research on menu labeling by indicating that social marketing does, in fact, increase awareness of healthier food items.

A Comparison of Drug Treatment for Insomnia and the Effect of Causal Attribution

Gifford, Susan Dalton 05 1900 (has links)
A double-blind comparison was conducted using typical doses of soporific agents from three drug classes and a placebo. Drugs which were used in the study included secobarbital, flurazepam hydrochloride, and thioridazine. Subjects were 40 outpatient volunteers whose primary complaint was difficulty in falling to sleep. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of the three drug groups or the placebo group. One of the drugs or the placebo was administered to each subject for 3 nights. Half of the subjects in each of the four groups were told the drug had caused any observed changes in their sleep behavior and were in this way led to attribute any changed sleep behavior externally to the drug. The other half were told the drugs were not typically used to treat insomnia and changes in their sleep were due to changes made in their own behavior, thus attributing any changes in sleep behavior internally. The implication for clinicians was that a short course of drug therapy using a placebo or one of several soporific drugs might be used equally effectively to treat primary latency insomnia. Additionally, the results demonstrated that clinicians might expect the effectiveness of treatment to be maintained following treatment. Recommendations included a suggestion for future research with soporific drugs in other classes.

The potential problems and improvement suggestions have been discussed in the study in hopes of providing the local education administration authorities, schools, and educators¡¦ valuable consultation. The research applies questionnaire investigation as the major research method. The survey on its existing problems and suggestive solutions is developed by the researcher. Questionnaires are distributed to school administration educators in 30 Tainan municipal junior high schools and elementary schools. 621 copies of questionnaires were distributed, 518 copies were collected, 506 copies are valid finally. Data is statistically analyzed for frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation in order to interpret demographics of survey respondents. According to the research outcomes, the major conclusions as followings: 1. The overall performance of remedial instruction classes fostered by the program in Tainan is acceptable¡C 2. School educators in general have positive point of views toward the solutions of remedial instruction classes fostered by the program. 3. They who never execute on remedial instructions feel the existing problems are serious than those who ever execute the program. 4. Aggressiveness at elementary schools is higher than it at municipal junior high in which existing more serious problems. Besides, small scale schools own higher aggressiveness with fewer problems than it at mid & large scale schools. 5. Among educators with various backgrounds at different school districts exist various thoughts on solution of the program. 6. Five factors on remedial instructions¡Glow enthusiasm of teachers¡Black of actual individual difference class grouping¡Blimitation of progress on higher grades¡Blimited class hours and short of craft and activity courses etc., must be faced and solved. 7. The most acceptable ways of solution on remedial instructions are acceptable earning¡Bmore teachers¡Bindividual difference class grouping¡Bresearch and develop teaching materials for remedial instructions and creating systematic diagnosis evaluation tools etc. According above discussions, this study made the following suggestions on future policy creating: 1. The education authorities should envisage educators¡¦ needs, offer solution and praise plans. Administration operation needs to focus on different school districts and various class grades by offering multi-methods promotion strategies. They should create systematic remedial instructions functions for receiving higher efficiency, and take elementary schools as the key target to implement remedial instructions. 2. The schools should reduce educators¡¦ difference on realization of the program by communication reinforcement, organize individual difference class grouping significantly to implement remedial instructions effectively; and promote students¡¦ learning desire by adding art, craft and activities courses. 3. The teachers should possess strategies and knowledge for remedial instructions to create teachers¡¦ professional image and behavior.
