Geological evaluation of a part of the Jambi Trough, Sumatra, IndonesiaOnasanya, Sherifat Olayemi 14 December 2013 (has links)
The research involves mapping of subsurface at a scale of 1:25,000 the top of three geological formations in the Southern Part of Sumatra – the Airbenakat Formation, the top of the Talangakar Formation, and the top of structural basement in the Jambi Trough. Isopach maps of the formations will be constructed. These maps will form the basis of a basin analysis and hydrocarbon source rock assessment of the Jambi Trough using Basin Mod basin modeling software (Rockworks Software).
The studies utilize the L. Bogue Hunt Southeast Asia database housed in the Department of Geological Sciences at Ball State University. Seismic record sections, geophysical logs, cutting descriptions, and paleontological reports will provide basic geological data to enable mapping of the three horizons.
Although hydrocarbon accumulations are abundant in Central and Southern Sumatra, the nature of the source rocks is only partially understood. The proposed research will map the Airbenakat and Talangakar Formations while identifying the areas of thermally mature source rock is the main goal of the research. This study will identify characteristics which will enable the identification of thermally mature rocks in other regions of Sumatra. The area of the project is located at the Southeastern part of Asia in Indonesia and mainly the Jambi trough located in Southern Sumatra. Generally, the geology and tectonics of this area (Sumatra) is controlled by the subduction of the Indian plate towards the east and beneath the Eurasia plate. / Department of Geological Sciences

Birds in coffee agroforestry systems of West Lampung, SumatraO'Connor, Trudy Rochelle January 2005 (has links)
In the Sumberjaya district of West Lampung, Indonesia, there has been widespread replacement of rainforest by robusta coffee. However, few studies have explored the relationship between birds and coffee gardens in Southeast Asia. This study examines the use of coffee gardens and other habitats by birds in the Sumberjaya and Pesisir regions. Birds and their habitat use were surveyed, as were structural and floristic vegetation features. Interviews with farmers indicated land management practices and limitations, as well as local perceptions of shade trees, birds and conservation programs. There were clear differences in bird diversity and assemblage uniqueness between types of coffee gardens. Over the region, ' multistrata ' gardens supported the greatest number of species. However, all coffee types had lower taxonomic diversity of birds than did forest. Frugivores, and birds of high conservation dependence, were poorly represented in coffee gardens. Microhabitat use by birds was significantly different between habitats, and it appeared that the birds did make use of structural features as they became available. Farmers indicated that shade trees had benefits such as sheltering coffee plants, and providing produce, but were also apprehensive about over - shading. Many claimed that bird assemblages have changed, yet while describing habitat loss as a past problem, few people felt that forest loss would cause bird deaths. Most farmers believed that coffee gardens had potential to provide useful bird habitat. Interviewees believed that both Government and the community were responsible for conservation. Many showed interest in co - operative conservation programs, particularly if they allowed farmers flexibility, or if they involved incentives related to land tenure. There was also interest in market - based schemes such as eco - certification. The primary action needed for conservation of Sumberjaya ' s birds is to minimise ongoing forest degradation. This may be achieved by linking incentives such as land tenure to forest protection. Capacity to create a certified coffee scheme may be limited by poor coffee quality and inappropriate garden characteristics. Farms maintained primarily for coffee production showed limited value for rainforest - adapted birds. However, the Krui damar gardens suggest a model, which as a forest buffer zone, may allow a more gentle spatial transition from agricultural to forest conditions. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--School of Social Sciences, 2005.

30-NOR-17 [alpha] (H) - hopanes and their applications in petroleum geochemistrySubroto, Eddy Ariyono January 1990 (has links)
A suite of samples consisting of twenty-two crude oils and eight sedimentary rocks has been analysed for biological marker compounds by GC-MS. The sedimentary rocks are rich in carbonate minerals and the crude oils were reported to have been derived from carbonate source rocks. These samples are from a variety of geographical origins, geological ages and depositional environments. They consistently contain a homologous series of 30-nor-17 [alpha] (H)-hopanes. Seven homologues (C28 - C34) of the 30-nor-17 [alpha](H)-hopane series have been identified. These compounds appear to be useful biological markers for samples having carbonate associations.A series of 25,30-bisnor-17 [alpha] (H)-hopanes has been observed in a severely biodegraded crude oil of probable carbonate origin. This observation, together with the well-established enrichment of normal hopanes demethylated at position 25 in severely biodegraded crude oils, suggests that the presence of this series of hopanes indicates severe biodegradation of crude oils originating from carbonate-rich source rocks.Another series of hopanes which was previously unreported, the 2-methyl-30-nor-1 [alpha] (H)-hopanes, has also been observed in the carbonate samples. Seven members (C29-C35) of this homologous series have been identified in this study. This series appears to be associated with carbonate rocks deposited under extreme reducing conditions. The biological marker compounds in another sample suite comprising twelve sediments and three crude oils from the North Sumatra Basin, Indonesia, have also been analysed by GC-MS as part of a correlation study. Sediment samples classified as shales, carbonaceous shales and calcareous shales have been shown to contain very different biomarkers. These distinctive biomarkers have enabled the source characteristics of the crude oils to be inferred. Two crude oils have been recognised ++ / with similar biomarker characteristics to the shales and one crude oil has the characteristics of the calcareous shale. The distinctive features of the carbonaceous shale were not observed in the crude oils. This study therefore provides an excellent example of how the 30-nor-17 [alpha] (H)-hopane compounds can be useful in oil-source rock correlation studies.
