En genusstudie av arbete och boende på Sundbysjukhus 1922-1936 / A gender study of the work and living possibilites of men and women at Sundby's psychiatric hospital between the years 1922-1936

Hallgren, Martin January 2017 (has links)
This is a gender study that examines the work and living possebilities of the men and women who worked at Sundbys psychiatric hospital between the years 1922-1936. I have chosen those particular years becasue of the location of the psychiatric hospitital. Syndby psychiatric hospital was constructed in 1922 on the isle Tosterön outside the community of Strängnäs. Until year 1936 the hospital was quite isolated from the rest of the community. This seems to have led to the creation of a community of its own. The fockus for my study lies in how men and women interacted with this community. To investigate this comunity in a manner fitting this study i neded to ask a question. The question i asked my self was this: Did labour standards and housing differ for the men and women who worked at Sundbys psychiatric hospital between the years 1922-1936? To answer this question i searched the hospital archives, studied literature concerning the hospital and literature concerning contemporary psychiatric care. My conclusion was this: Labour standards and housing seems to have differed for the men and women ho worked at Sundby psychiatric hospital between the years 1922-1936. The diffrence seems to have been in the advantage of the male employees who among other things resived greater pay and better accommodations. It seems however that Sundby psychiatric hospital gave women a posebility to create a proffesional life and in some cases make a academic carer. In a time where this seems to have been very hard.
