The present dissertation deals with Rousseau's critic to society and its institutions, which are considered responsible for the corruption of the human being. The philosopher demonstrates that man passes from the state of nature, in which he is free and there are no conflicts, to the social state, becoming enslaved by other people opinions. From this moment on, he is moved by the desire of distinction, he becomes an actor, employing disguises to be accepted and appreciated. Due to this dynamic, the 18thsociety is alike a theater, stressed by the very artistic institution which philosophers as Diderot and D' Alembert resort to with the intention of diffusing culture and morals. The Genevan philosopher speculates on the possibility of restoring the state of nature liberty to the socialized man while avoiding the harmful influences the interaction with other people might have on him / Mestrado / Mestre em Filosofia
