Os dados empíricos foram tomados de 'Renascer', 'O Rei do Gado', 'Terra Nostra' e 'Esperança' -que, no conjunto, tratam da propriedade da terra e reforma agrária, bem como referem-se aos trabalhadores e suas organizações coletivas e a movimentos sociais (remotos ou contemporâneos) no Brasil -, escritas por Benedito Ruy Barbosa e produzidas pela Rede Globo de Televisão. Destaca-se o fato de as telenovelas constituírem o principal item da programação televisiva no Brasil, podendo ser seguidas, em média, por cerca de 60 milhões de telespectadores. Ao pesquisá-las, procuramos contribuir com os estudos sobre TV e realidade. A análise se concentra nas formas de construção da imagem dos trabalhadores, na ênfase à identidade nacional e ao mito da integração social; no apelo ao consumo de bens materiais e simbólicos; nas maneiras de ocultar I desvendar a natureza dos conflitos e desigualdades sociais através das telenovelas. Mas também se refere a aspectos da relação da emissora que as produz com os respectivos governos, procurando,simultaneamente,identificar os elementos centrais de seu discurso atual e relacioná-lo ao papel de suas telenovelas a partir da década de 90 / Abstract: This study approached the Brazilian 'telenovelas' of the last decade, which tried to portray aspects of the Brazilian reality, introducing thematic considered socially important. The empiric data were taken of 'Renascer', 'O Rei do Gado', 'Terra Nostra' and 'Esperança' - that are about the division or concentration of the rural property, as well as about labours and its organizations, and social manifestations (remote or contemporary) in Brazil-written by Benedito Ruy Barbosa and produced by the 'Rede Globo' Television. The prominence fact: they are the most imporlant in Brazilian television; the telenovelas has about 60 million viewers. When researching them, we tried to give our contribution to the studies about TV and reality. The analysis concentrates in the forms of construction of the workers' image, in the emphasis to the national identity and in the myth of the social integration; in appeal to the material and symbolic consumption forms; in the ways to hide I to unmask the specific nature of the conflicts and social inequalities, that characterize Brazil, through the 'telenovelas'.And it is also referred to the aspects of the relationships oft he 'Rede Globo' with the respective govemments, simultaneously, trying to identify the central elemen1s of current discourse of 'Rede Globo' about itself and to relate it to the function of the telenovelas, starting from the years 1990 / Doutorado / Doutor em Sociologia
