What's that sound? Political action and the New Left at Purdue University, 1968-1970

Belser, Elizabeth A. January 2017 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This thesis argues that Purdue, a socially and politically conservative institution in an equally conservative state, provides an ideal atmosphere in which to study the inception of the New Left. The insular nature of the campus and its relative isolation from outside groups provides an opportunity to study the genesis of the movement as it progressed from local concerns to a broader focus on national and international topics.

Contribution à la conception d'antennes composées de structures CRLH (Composite Right Left-Handed) / Contribution to CRLH (Composite Right Left-Handed) based antennas design

Thior, Aïta 09 October 2012 (has links)
Metamaterials are artificial structures with unusual electromagnetic properties. Composite Right-Left Handed (CRLH) radiating structures are very attractive antennas because of their scanning capability and wideband performances. However crlh lines must contain a large number of cells in order to have sufficient radiation efficiency. Due to the recurring request of having small antennas in new communication systems, new designs based on crlh structures must be found. The first objective of this thesis is to have full knowledge of electromagnetic properties of crlh structures. To take advantages of atypical electromagnetic behavior of CRLH structures, new CRLH based antennas designs are proposed. These new inspired antennas could produce different radiation patterns (with large beamwidth, narrow beam, double polarization). Analytical model, previously validated by electromagnetic simulator, is used to characterize the new proposed antennas.

Is the Religious Left Resurgent?

Baker, Joseph O., Marti, Gerardo 08 April 2020 (has links)
Journalistic sources seem to suggest that there has been a resurgence of the American Religious Left (i.e., politically liberal Christians who support progressive agendas) in the wake of the strong support from the conservative Christian right in the 2016 presidential election of Donald J. Trump. Using quantitative analysis, we draw on survey data from the General Social Survey, the Public Religion Research Institute, and the National Congregations Study to assess the possibility of a resurgence among the Religious Left. In comparison with a speculated rise, our analysis indicates a notable decline in both the prevalence and engagement of Americans who self-identify as both religious and politically liberal. Not only is the constituency of the Religious Left shrinking, they have also been steadily disengaging from political activity in the last decade. Especially when looking at more recent elections, it has been those among the Secular Left who have been the most politically engaged. We summarize these empirical patterns in relation to the Religious Right and consider the potential for influence among the Religious Left aside from electoral politics. We also briefly consider other possibilities for their political impact and reflect on the inadequacy of the label “Religious Left” for capturing important dynamics. In the end, we urge greater attention to politics among sociologists of religion, providing a set of research questions to consider in light of the upcoming American 2020 national election.

The Space of Left Orders on a Group

Karcher, Kelli Marie 18 May 2011 (has links)
The study of orderable groups is a topic that is all too often overlooked as a topic in algebra. The subject of orderable groups is a field of study which is directly associated with algebraic group theory, algebraic topology, and set theory. This paper will act as a guide into the world of orderable groups. It begins by enlightening the reader to the fundamental axioms of orderable groups, as well as, noting various important groups on which orders are often considered. We will then consider more interesting groups, on which the placement of orders is considered less often. After considering the orderings placed on various groups, we wish to consider in further detail the topologies of the sets of these orders. In particular, it is important to consider whether the set of orders placed on a particular group is finite or uncountable. We prove the latter by creating a homeomorphism from the group to the Cantor set, a set which is known for its uncountability. / Master of Science
