O relacionamento Brasil - EUA e a arquitetura moderna: experiências compartilhadas, 1939-1959 / The relationship Brazil - USA and the Modern Architecture: shared experiences, 1939 - 1959

Débora da Rosa Rodrigues Lima Hormain 09 November 2012 (has links)
The doctoral thesis examines the relationship in question, the experiences and professional exchanges occurred between the Brazilian and American architects (or immigrants in North America) in a period that extends from the recognition of Brazilian modern architecture at the international level, between late 1930s and early forties, through the second post-war until the early 1960s. Many were the exchanges between the two countries, often undeserved in detriment of those that occurred with the European continent, and in this paper we give space and seek their understanding. So the focus of the research was to demonstrate that other fronts of dialogue have been consolidated, just as the modern architecture that was done in Brazil was also beginning to dialogue internationally, and within this framework, the United States of America, new cultural center of the world, played a key role. Assuming that the relationship between Brazil and the United States was instrumental in the process, dissemination and strengthening of Brazilian modernism at the international level, the objective of the work was to understand, through the identification of the characters and analysis of the experiences and exchanges between the two countries, how these events have focused on the Brazilian architectural field. The theme was developed from a synthetic view of the interaction between the historiography of the modern movement and the historical and cultural context in which professional architects were inserted at that precise moment in history.

Komparace vybraných aspektů právní úpravy otroctví a jeho zrušení v USA a ve Velké Británii / Comparison of certain aspects of legal regulation of slavery and its abolition in the USA and in Great Britain

Brilová, Alžběta January 2016 (has links)
1 COMPARISON OF CERTAIN ASPECTS OF LEGAL REGULATION OF SLAVERY AND ITS ABOLITION IN THE USA AND IN GREAT BRITAIN Resumé This thesis deals with legal regulation of slavery in Great Britain and the United states of America and also with its abolition. The first part of the thesis is theoretical. At the beginning, it describes the concepts of "slavery", "slave society" and "abolition". This is followed by the brief history of slavery, from the ancient society, through the Middle Ages, to slavery in North America. The end of this chapter briefly discusses the legal aspects of slavery in general, and the influence of the Enlightenment and Christianity on the perception of slavery. The second part focuses on situation in various geographic regions and some legal phenomena relating to slavery. The regions covered include England, specific for fact that slavery was abandoned there as early as in the 12th century and has never had any legislative background, together with India and the Caribbean as two examples of the opposite ends of the spectrum - while in the Caribbean slavery still constitutes a determining social element, in India the effects of slavery are surprisingly "negligible". The next section deals with other Britain's colonies and the characteristics of North American continent, and situation in the...

Relationship between Stock Returns and Net Income: Evidence from U.S. Market / Relationship between Stock Returns and Net Income: Evidence from U.S. Market

Kolář, Michal January 2017 (has links)
It is important to know if earnings variables influence stock returns. This is important not just for investors who want to know what drives stock returns, but also for the overall economy as stock returns and stock markets are also considered to be significant indicators of its performance. Many studies were conducted in the past but with inconclusive results. The aim of the thesis is to examine the relationship between net income and stock returns using two approaches, namely panel data model and multiple linear regression. We utilize a dataset of companies selected from the S&P500 Index. We also analyse possible heterogeneity in cross section and time. Moreover, we incorporate additional factors which have been proven to have significant explanation power for stock returns. Our findings from the panel data estimation suggest that there is no relationship between scaled net income and stock returns. We find there are random effects present between the companies and three structural breaks in time. Furthermore, we explore the significance of the consumer sentiment index and the percentage change in the book value per share variables in the panel estimation. We do not confirm the debt to equity ratio and the GDP growth news factors in the panel estimation as significant. Results concerning the...

The influence of flight delays on business travellers

Victor, Colette 17 September 2010 (has links)
The main aim of the study was to assess the influence of flight delays on business travellers. Studies on flight delays have been done from a number of perspectives; these include the reasons for flights delays, the costs to airlines and airports, the effect on airline scheduling and the impact on airline market share. An area that has received little, if any, attention is the impact of flight delays on business travellers, one of the most lucrative markets for airlines. This study empirically researches the direct cost of flight delays to travellers of a specific corporation. In addition, the use of mobile technology in communicating the occurrence of flight delays to business travellers, and how this could alleviate traveller frustrations, are discussed from a theoretical perspective. The study followed a quantitative methodology to determine man-hours lost and the direct costs of flight delays to travellers from a selected corporation. Two data sets were used, one provided by the corporation on flights undertaken by their corporate travellers over a predetermined period, the other by the Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) on all flights over the same period. The two sets of data were matched and analysed to determine which flights undertaken by the corporate travellers were delayed, based on actual arrival times, and if any significant relationships could be determined between flight delays and types of traveller (frequent versus infrequent) or specific time periods (time of day, day, week and month). The results indicated that frequent travellers experienced the majority of flight delays, and consequently represented the greatest cost to the corporation. The study also found significant relationships between substantial delays and the month of the year, day of the week, and the time of day flown. The identification of patterns could provide business travellers with the information to better manage their travel arrangements and optimise their travel times and costs. In calculating the direct monetary cost, the value of time lost was found not to constitute a substantial amount to the corporation, but this result must be viewed against the limitations of the study. This study serves to provide a foundation for future research into the cost of flight delays to business travellers. Future research should include larger samples (large global or multiple companies could be used) and extend the time periods for assessing delays. Future studies could also include other direct and indirect costs not covered here and the study could be replicated in different geographical areas, particularly areas with a high density of flights such as Asia, the United States of America and Europe. Political, social and cultural integration of the immigrants from India in the United States of America / Political, social and cultural integration of the immigrants from India in the United States of America

Rezková, Hana January 2008 (has links)
This paper deals with the political, social and cultural integration of the immigrants from India in the United States of America. The last and so far the biggest wave of Asian Indian immigration to the U.S. began after 1965 with the passage of the new Immigration Act. Today, there are more than 2.5 million Asian Indian immigrants living in the U.S. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the chronology of events and history of U.S. immigration laws concerning Asian, and particularly Asian Indian, immigrants. Building on this analysis, the goal is further to show how the immigrants were being discriminated against and how they managed to integrate successfully into the mainstream American society despite many cases of refusal and acts based on prejudice. The Social Integration part analyzes possible problems in the Asian Indian immigrant family living in the U.S., their attitudes towards education, and finally their success at work. The Cultural Integration part includes the topic of multiculturalism, issues of conflict and communication, differences between the American and Indian culture, as well as religion, holidays, and traditions.
