Categorical perception of lexical tones: behavioral and psychophysiological study. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

All these four factors influence the degree of CP. In the discussion, both general auditory processing and language specific processing are suggested to be responsible for the various types of exhibition of CP, although they have different weights for different factors. Different patterns of CP were also observed in three temporal stages due to different weights of these two types of processing. In summary, a multistage model which includes both general auditory processing and language specific processing is proposed to explain the CP of lexical tones. This model improves previous models by proposing that the weights of these two types of processing in speech perception depend on the types of factors, and the temporal processing stages. / Finally, for the first time in the literature, the thesis also reported that even though a tone contrast (i.e., level vs. rising) is present in both tone systems, the same contrast is perceived differently by the two groups of subjects by virtue of their different language experiences. / Four factors were studied. They were (1) intrinsic acoustic properties of pitch contours by comparison between continua of level tones and contour tones; (2) positions of target syllables relative to context (without contextual sentence, at the beginning and at the end of the contextual sentence); (3) language backgrounds by comparison between listeners with different tone experiences; and (4) carrier syllables (real word, non word, and nonspeech). Three temporal stages were studied in the same experimental paradigm. They were (1) the preattentive stage investigated through the mismatch negativity (MMN); (2) the attentive stage investigated through the P300; and (3) the overt response stage investigated through the hit rate data. / Pitch contour or its acoustic correlate, fundamental frequency (F0), distinguishes lexical meanings in tone languages. Two topics on CP of lexical tones were studied in the thesis: (1) the factors influencing CP, and (2) the temporal process of CP. These two topics were investigated through both behavioral and event-related-potential (ERP) methods on Cantonese and Mandarin tones. / Speech sounds vary across different conditions and subjects; nevertheless, listeners perceive the phonemes without difficulties. Categorical perception (CP) occurs when listeners map the varying speech sounds into discrete phonemic categories. In CP, to discriminate a pair of stimuli that cross a category boundary is much easier than those that lie within the same category, even though both pairs are separated by an equal physical difference. Functional significance of sodium calcium exchange in arteriolar myogenic zone.

To determine a possible role for NCX in myogenically active smooth muscle arterioles, studies were conducted by manipulation of extracellular Na+ levels and inhibition of the exchanger. Western blotting was performed for the identification of the NCX protein. Real-time PCR was performed to demonstrate the level of expression of mRNA, for the NCX isoforms. Antisense oligonucleotides against NCX mRNA were introduced in an isolated cremaster arteriole followed by functional studies after 24 hours. Level of expression of NCX was determined by western blotting. The data are consistent with the presence of NCX1 in the cremaster arterioles.

A Design of Speech Recognition System for Two-word¡BThree-word and Four-word Mandarin Phrases

In this thesis, a two-word, three-word and four-word Mandarin phrases speech recognition system is studied and implemented. This system utilizes hidden Markov model, lexicon search strategy and tone recognition to select the initial phrase candidates and make the final decision. Experimental results indicate that using about one third of the total phrase population, 80%, 92% and 97% correct rates can be achieved for the 70,000 two-word, 24,000 three-word and 22,000 four-word phrases recognition problems respectively. Any spoken phrase can be found within 1 second, using a PC with Intel Celeron 2.4 GHz CPU and Red Hat Linux 9.0 operating system.

Tone Mapping by Interactive Evolution

Tone mapping is a computational task of significance in the context of displaying high dynamic range images on low dynamic range devices. While a number of tone mapping algorithms have been proposed and are in common use, there is no single operator that yields optimal results under all conditions. Moreover, obtaining satisfactory mappings often requires the manual tweaking of parameters. This thesis proposes interactive evolution as a computational tool for tone mapping. An evolution strategy that blends the results from several tone mapping operators while at the same time adapting their parameters is proposed. As well, the results are adapted such that such that approximately uniform perceptual distances between offspring candidate solutions and the parent are ensured. The introduction of a perceptually based step size adaptation technique enhances the control of the variability between newly generated offspring, when compared to parameter space step size adaptation.

This report is about how HDR (HighDynamicRange) can be created and used in combination with Tone mapping. This work has been carried out together with Kapsch TrafficCom AB in Jönköping. The objective of this project is to: Evaluate and investigate the effects given to pictures by HDR and tone mapping. Evaluate if the technology may lead to improvements in Kapsch’s systems. To construct a program which is able to handle some form of tone mapping or HDR-algorithm. These questions will be answered in this report: What kind of effects has HDR and tone mapping-algorithms on pictures? Can the HDR-technology give better data in Kapsch’s systems? The research method used in this report is called action research. This means the authors has investigated the technology by reading different documentations and by testing different algorithms to see what kind of result they give. The report describes some of the tests made to see if the technology is appropriate in Kapsch’s system.There is two smaller reports made by the authors which documenting some of the work.The first report describes the work with different settings for a camera to create pictures with HDR-quality. The second report describes the differences between tone mapping-algorithms and different file format. Both reports are included as appendices to this report.In the program created by the authors some larger library’s with standard functions for opening of JPEG-pictures was used. The chosen library’s was MFC and GDI+. The program is developed for a windows environment and handles functions like sharpening with unsharp mask, colour space conversion and tone mapping.

The second is the analysis of variation structure, motive development, tone painting skill, orchestration timbre and harmony disposition.
