The aim of this thesis is to provide an insight into the translation of non-literary texts in social sciences from French into Czech, in terms of both cultural and social specificities, and in terms of language use. This paper defends the hypothesis that this type of translation presents unique characteristics compared to other kinds of translations, and that social science translations are currently under published. Sociology was chosen as a discipline representative of the social sciences. The first part presents an outline of the historical development of Czech sociology with regard to French influence. Underlying data was used to conduct a survey among the Czech professional sociological community to evaluate aspects of its linguistic orientation. The first part of this thesis also provides a brief overview of the production and reception of Czech translations of French sociology, with the ultimate aim to compare the "supply" of these translations to the "demand" for them and to highlight several of their specific problems and obstacles. Tereza Jůzová's thesis Georg Trakl's Poetry in Czech Translations tries to discover which specific expression this Austrian poet takes in three Czech versions created by Bohuslav Reynek (1917, 1924), Ludvík Kundera (1965) and Radek Malý (2005) - three translators belonging to three different generations. The first chapter is devoted to Trakl and his work, ranked in the social and literary context. The second chapter presents the translators and their achievements, summarizes the period reception, and gives a brief overview of the poet's influence on original Czech literature. The focus of the thesis is the third chapter - translation analysis of six selected poems transposed to Czech. It is theoretically based on the translation shifts theory of Anton Popovič and on the method of translation analysis developed by Jiří Levý. It turns out that each of the original translators handled the original in their own way and accentuated different aspects of Trakl's work. Reynek colours the words by kind and gentle expression and his translation is the most peculiar. Kundera and Malý approached Trakl's plain style, Kundera, however, does not hesitate to underline some poetic passages. This MA thesis focuses on four different Czech translations of William Shakespeare's narrative poem A Lover's Complaint (Antonín Klášterský 1923, Jarmila Urbánková 1997, Jiří Josek 2008, Martin Hilský 2009). The first part of the thesis characterizes the development of and changes in the Anglo-Saxon critical reception of this much-neglected work from its first publication up until the present day. Further, it shows the interdependence between the position of A Lover's Complaint in Shakespeare's canon and the interpretation of the poem's meaning. The second part focuses on the Czech critical reception and compares it to the Anglo-Saxon one. This part also introduces the four translators with respect to their literary and translation activities and describes the poetic and translation norms prevalent at the time of their careers. In the third (the empirical) part, the focus is on formal and semantic analysis of the source text, as well as of the individual translations. On the basis of these analyses it is examined to what extent the translations correspond to the source text; what shifts, losses or enrichments occur as a result of each translation. The thesis focuses on modern translations of the classic American novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald within the Czech cultural setting. Initially, in accordance with Gideon Toury's (2012) descriptive model, two Czech translations will be compared in light of their functionality within the target literary canon, their dominating stylistic features will be determined and they will be assessed in terms of their acceptability or adequacy. Subsequently selected excerpts will be compared with the source text to reveal how each of the translations treats Fitzgerald's text, and in relation to these findings their shifts between acceptability and adequacy will be specified. The central goal of the thesis is to evaluate the transfer of Fitzgerald's very specific writing style, with special focus on its poetic character, lyricism and imagery. Therefore individual translation strategies will be identified and the invariant core of both of the translations will be determined. This theses focuses on Olga Krijtova (1931-2013), Czech translator from Dutch. The aim is to introduce Olga Krijtova within the framework of reception of Dutch literature in Czech cultural environment. In order to explore this framework, the thesis compares Czech and Dutch culture from translatological point of view, outlines the history of Czech-Dutch relationshiops and Dutch literary translations into Czech, as well as the history and current state of the academic discipline of Dutch studies. In the 20th century, Olga Krijtova had contributed greatly to making the Dutch literature available for Czech recipients. The thesis aims to find out how many translations done between the years 1957-2016 are Krijtova's or her students' work. Further, it summarizes her teaching and linguistic work. However, the main focus is her translation activities, which is studied by means of translation analysis in the second part of the thesis. The final aim is to review and interpret Krijtova's translation strategies and methods, as well as to assess her overall contribution to the reception of Dutch literature within the Czech environment and to the Dutch studies in the Czech Republic.
