Triabolous

Triabolous is a three movement composition for trombone, woodwind quintet, and one percussionist. The three movements Agitato, Andante, and Allegro, are of equal length resulting in a total performance time of 15 minutes. The piece is primarily a trombone solo; however, the trombone does not function as a solo throughout the total composition. There are portions of every movement where the trombone is silent or added to the quintet as an auxiliary wind instrument.

Utility Trombone Playing: A Practical Method for Students to Achieve Mastery of Alto, Tenor and Bass Trombone

With the importance of versatility in freelance work in the world of trombone performance, along with increased competition for that work, the need for players to play alto, tenor, and bass trombones to a high level of proficiency has become more and more crucial. This, coupled with the growing number of orchestras looking to hire musicians who are highly competent on all three instruments means that university professors need to be able to teach all three instruments. This evolution of the job market is driving a need for pedagogical material that is specifically designed to address the unique challenges of practicing and performing at a professional level on the main three instruments in the trombone family. As of the time of writing, this material simply does not exist. This project aims to fill that instructional gap. It gives students and teachers a resource that outlines an approach for a four-year undergraduate course of study that allows for the development of the playing of each of the trombones individually and collectively, utilizing the strengths of one instrument to develop the other two. It will also allow for the exploration of the technical challenges that arise when playing and changing between instruments. This four-year course of study combined with a clear explanation of numerous routines can be used from early in a student's development. It can be tailored to their specific needs and will give any teacher and student a comprehensive and holistic method for the acquisition of the skills needed to become a successful utility trombonist.

Mastery in Colonial and Post-Colonial Brazil: José Maurício Nunes Garcia's (1767-1830) Use of Trombone in His "Missa De Santa Cecília" (1826)

Padre José Maurício Nunes Garcia (1767-1830) was perhaps the most prolific, revered, and successful composer in 18th and 19th century colonial and postcolonial Brazil. Padre José Maurício's favor with King Dom João VI, the Portuguese Royal Court, and a catalogue of hundreds of compositions, is validation of his success, yet there is comparatively little academic research and recognition in comparison to his European contemporaries. Padre José Maurício's employment of the trombone within his ambitious capstone, his Missa de Santa Cecília showcases his recognizable and original compositional language. The influence of two contemporaries of Padre José Maurício, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) and Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868), had an integral and clear influence on the Missa de Santa Cecília without resulting in rote imitation. Mozartian text emphasis, independent part writing, technical demand, and traditional use of the trombone for sacred or supernatural imagery were synthesized by Padre José Maurício swiftly and originally. Simultaneously, Rossinian orchestration, close scoring, limited range, subverted structural arrivals, and emulated percussive effects were personalized and employed by Padre José Maurício. His insular development and instantaneous adaptation of new orchestration and theatrical models yields trombone writing that is idiomatic, in alignment with sacred and symphonic tradition, and essential to the study of the trombone in the early 18th century. Padre José Maurício's trombone writing is significant for primarily two reasons: it is at odds with current historical trombone texts, and his insular development in a hegemonic society yielded an individual compositional style.

In August 2016, the Arizona State University School of Music, through the efforts of retired Professor of Trombone Douglas Yeo, received a donation of materials from Thomas Everett, founder of the International Trombone Association and retired director of bands at Harvard University. This donation contains published and unpublished music, numerous letters, and various drafts of his book, An Annotated Guide to Bass Trombone Literature. Over the course of two-and-a-half years, the donation was catalogued for the university by the author. This dissertation consists of three solo recitals and one lecture recital. The repertoire of all programs is composed of music written specifically for the trombone plus two transcriptions of works for voice. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the use of selected vocal pedagogical material as a means of developing musicianship for the trombonist. The historical relationship of the voice and the trombone is traced through written documentation and musical composition. Similarities between the development of legato technique for the vocal student and the trombonist are examined. A brief history of the vocalise and its pedagogical function is presented. The development of expressive musical performance for the trombonist is explored through the use of examples from three different vocalises of Marco Bordogni.

History and Current State of Performance of the Literature for Solo Trombone and Organ

More than 200 compositions have been written for solo trombone and organ since the nineteenth century, including contributions from notable composers such as Franz Liszt, Gustav Holst, Gardner Read, Petr Eben, and Jan Koetsier. This repertoire represents a significant part of the solo literature for the trombone, but it is largely unknown to both trombonists and organists. The purpose of this document is to provide a historical perspective of this literature from the nineteenth century to the present, to compile a complete bibliography of compositions for trombone and organ, and to determine the current state of performance of this repertoire. This current state of performance has been determined through an internet survey, a study of recital programs printed in the ITA Journal, a study of recordings of this literature, and interviews and correspondence with well-known performers of these compositions. It is the intention of this author that this document will serve to make the repertoire for trombone and organ more accessible and more widely known to both trombonists and organists.

The modern bass trombone has undergone many changes in design since the 1960s and a student beginning on or switching to bass trombone today needs pedagogical material that methodically addresses the many valve combinations available on an independent double valve bass trombone. The existing books for bass trombone contain useful exercises, but none of the currently available books address all the valve combinations and patterns that are helpful for developing proficient valve technique on bass trombone. Therefore, I created a new bass trombone double valve technique method book that includes a thorough exploration of the bass trombone's two valves within the context of scales, scale exercises, and original material specifically designed to be applicable to common literature for the bass trombone.
