KUWAITI MODERNITY REVISITED: A CONTEMPORARY MIXED-USE PROJECT IN OLD KUWAIT CITY

Alabdulrazzaq, Husain 06 July 2011 (has links)
Caught between a cultural scene nostalgic to historic architecture and economic growth manifesting its volume in tall skyscrapers, the overlooked modern heritage of Kuwait City is increasingly vanishing. This thesis tests to what extent modern heritage can inform a contemporary mixed-use development in Old Kuwait City. Not perceived as a source for fixed prototypes, modern architecture is studied both as a major component of the contemporary cityscape, giving the city its urban nature, and as a product of critical thinking that explores different possibilities in mediating the modern with the particularities of the Middle Eastern context. The work of elite architects inspired an investigatory reading of the contemporary City, with focus on lasting implications both modern planning and design had on the city. Modern heritage of Kuwait City is studied at various scales for strategies, in an attempt to arrive at a design that breaks away from prototypical forms while being continuous with the past.

Jaroš, Jiří January 2016 (has links)
Primary objective of master's thesis named Media image of changes at Wenceslas Square in the context of urbanism and architectural quality is to analyse the media coverage of important architectural and urban changes of Wenceslas Square between 1997 and 2015. The two main topics chosen for the analysis are the Revitalisation of Wenceslas Square and the development of Euro Palace. The purpose of the analysis is to answer the following question: "Do readers of generally oriented periodicals have an access to objective information about architectural and urban projects?" I will apply a quantitative content analysis to answer this question and prove that media contents are unbiased. After that, we would be able to say in case of Prague the architectural topics are covered enough and readers have a chance to form their own opinions or not.

A Case In French Colonial Politics Of Architecture And Urbanism: Antioch And Alexandretta During The Mandate

Acikgoz, Umit Firat 01 September 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this study is to investigate characteristics of urban transformation in Antioch and Alexandretta during the French Mandate, 1920-1938. Contending that a purely formal analysis would fail to grasp complex politics of architecture and urbanism promoted by the French administration, this thesis seeks to explore the urban transformation of these cities in its political and representational context. In analyzing the French perception of the urban space especially in Antioch, this thesis devotes an extensive attention to the nineteenth century travelers who visited Antioch, by emphasizing the ways in which they described the urban make-up of the city. Moreover, it situates the case of Antioch and Alexandretta within the broader framework of French colonial architecture and urbanism by occassionally referring to French North Africa on the one hand, and other cities of the French Mandate in Syria and Lebanon on the other hand. Along with an analysis of the changing built environment in Antioch and Alexandretta, other visual and representational strategies such as the colonial exhibition, archeological works, scholarly endeavors, and tourism are discussed. It is the major premise of this thesis that a comprehensive portrayal of the architectural and urban transformation of these cities might be attained only through the inclusion of different forms of political and visual representation.

Res Publica: ANNEXION / Brno – Římské náměstí / Res Publica: ANNEXION / Brno – Římské náměstí (Roman´s Square)

Hanžl, Jakub January 2018 (has links)
The diploma thesis follows the pre-diploma project "Roman Square" from winter semester 2017/2018. The content of the thesis was the analysis of the current state of the square and the determination of conditions for further use of the area. The thesis was not only limited to an analytical statement about the current form of the territory, but it presents a critical view on the legislative and methodological framework of the planning documentation. As a result, the regulatory plan was replaced by the current plan, which became the city plan of the city of Vienna. He works with tools that reflect the paradigms of contemporary urbanism. By using a minimum number of regulations, it sets clear rules for the creation of place and location of objects in relation to the character of the existing building, while maintaining the possibility of individual approach to filling the design areas within the defined rules. The proposed regulatory plan uses these tools to use concepts as defined by Czech legislation, and the functionality of these tools has been tested in a number of mass models during the preparation of the plan. The new city plan, together with the knowledge gained during the preparation of the pre-diploma project, became the basis for the creation of a proposal for the solution of Roman Square and newly placed buildings.

Česká urbanistická tvorba 1938-1948: regionalismus a činnost Zemského studijního a plánovacího ústavu v Brně. / Czech Urbanism 1938 - 1948: Regionalism and Work of the Country Research and Planning Institute in Brno

Pražanová, Eva January 2015 (has links)
The given dissertation presents the work of the Country Research and Planning Institute in Brno and depicts regional tendencies in the Czech urbanism in the 40's. In her paper the author focuses on the period between 1938 and 1948 that marks the active existence of Brno's institute which was the most progressive institution within the field of regional planning in that era and whose activities have never been described sufficiently. The main initiators and authors of the institute concept were Bohuslav Fuchs, Jindřich Kumpošt and Josef Mrkos; later a significant figure of the Czech regional planning - Emanuel Hruška joined them. The dissertation defines the urbanistic works of the specified period as continuance of the previous development forcibly interrupted in 1948. In order to understand the motives for the regional planning, this paper outlines the principal idealistic concepts of the planners: criticism of liberalism, holism, technocracy, and redefinition of so called scientific stage of functionalism related to the problem of mental functions in the architecture. After introducing the regional planning in the world and Czechoslovakia at the beginning of the 40's the history, concept and functioning of Brno's institute is presented, including analyses of its main projects. This diploma thesis deals with urban studies on the territory of Svitavy river in Brno-Husovice. Part of the solved territory is defined as a brownfield - specifically, it is a former Zetor site. New backbone roads are proposed in the defined area, new residential complexes that integrate the area into the surrounding area.
