It is made a conceptual approacg of both physical and social infrastructure for Walkability: the streets, the sidewalks and the limitations that the urban space imposes to the pedestrian. This study pervades, therefore, issues and elements that are fundamental for the comprehension of the essential processes of Walkability. It will also be demonstrated how urbanistic past choices have culminated in the abandonment of historical centralities, which, if added up to the increase of the urban area influenced by the transport matrix, have made people more attached to the private automobile, limiting cities’ capacity to offer environments which promote walking mobility. Walkability, therefore, is a tool which allows the study of the reasons why people walk or stop walking in the cities, as well as the impact of that in people’s life quality. This is the central theme of the present study. / Este estudo pretende mostrar a importância da caminhada para o indivíduo e suas relações socias com a cidade. Será feita uma abordagem conceitual sobre a infraetrurura física e social para a Caminhabilidade: as ruas, as calçadas e as limitações que o espaço urbano impõe ao pedestre. Esta disseração permeará, portanto, questões e elementos fundamentais para a compreensão do conceito de Caminhabilidade. Também será demonstrado como as escolhas urbanísticas passadas culminaram no abandono das centralidades históricas, o que, se somado à ampliação da mancha urbana influenciada pela matriz de transportes, tornou as pessoas mais dependentes do automóvel particular, limitando a capacidade que as cidades tinham de oferecerem ambientes que promovessem a mobilidade a pé. A Caminhabilidade, assim, é uma ferramenta que permite estudar por que as pessoas caminham ou deixam de caminhar nas cidades e o impacto disso na qualidade de vida das pessoas. É esse, portanto, o tema em torno do qual gira o presente estudo.
