To write a descriptive, chronological history of Manti journalists and their newspapers was the purpose of this study. A century of journalism was traced, during which twenty-six editors and publishers printed six country newspapers. The study covered the years from 1867 to 1967.

This thesis is a history of the original thirty-seven homesteaders of Highland, Utah. It covers a period of about twenty-five years, 1875-1900. The study provides an example of a aberrant community which was not established in the same, distinctive style of settlement as the typical Mormon village. In addition it describes the relationship between the original residents and non-residents of Highland with the surrounding villages of Lehi, American Fork, and Alpine.

This thesis is an inquiry into the problem of labor mobility in Utah County, Utah. Utah County has been designated as an area of substantial unemployment by the federal government. This thesis suggests one means to lessen this unemployment is through better mobility of the work force in Utah County.

In 1846 the Mormons were expelled westward from Nauvoo, Illinois. Beyond the borders of the United States, the Mormon Church absorbed the civil functions of municipal government, a pattern which continued in the Great Basin and received the sanction of state authority in 1849 under Deseret.As the political arm of the "Kingdom of God," the Council of Fifty influenced local political development as its members simultaneously occupied elective offices in both the territorial legislature and municipal government.During the first decade as a territory, Utah's city charters generally followed the pattern established by Nauvoo in 1840. However, in the Great Basin, municipalities included vast areas of incorporation and were granted extensive control over surrounding natural resources. The alderman was a powerful municipal official until 1866 when his judicial duties were transferred to the municipal justice of peace and the strong mayor was introduced. Utah's municipalities were classified according to population in 1888.

This thesis is a study of the mechanisms employed in the community building process of Hurricane, Utah. It traces the roots of the town's early settlers beginning with their arrival in southern Utah in the early 1860s through the founding of Hurricane and the establishment of its social order. This pioneering period largely ended by 1930.Hurricane's founders were the remnants of the Mormon Church's failed Cotton Mission. Original U.S. census research shows that by 1900 close to half of the mission's colonizers abandoned the challenging desert of southern Utah. The stalwarts who remained fashioned the Hurricane Canal with the expectation of economic betterment and a new life on the Hurricane Bench.Using ingrained Mormon egalitarian principles the Hurricane Canal Company proved the driving force behind Hurricane's genesis. Company leaders became the new town's leaders and cooperated extensively in the various organizations they headed. They formed a core authority group that created stability and provided public utilities and services for Hurricane denizens. In the end Hurricane produced the chance for economic improvement its pioneers hoped it would.

This study was initiated to investigate the distribution patterns of two species of pocket gophers, Thomomys umbrinus albicaudatus Hall and T. talpoides wasatchensis Durrant whose ranges come together in the Hobble Creek area, Utah. The effect of certain ecological factors upon their distribution was determined. The ecological factors included: vegetation and land use, soil, moisture and exposure, hybridization and interspecific competition. From morphological examination no interbreeding was detected even though the breeding seasons of the two species correspond. A limited area was found where the ranges of the two species are in contact. A lack of available moisture was determined to be a major factor inhibiting the distribution or talpoides in non-irrigated soils. Umbrinus is very versatile toward moisture and does not appear to be affected. Both species show a preference for sandy or gravelly-loam soils. Interspecific competition apparently inhibits the distribution of both species where the ranges come together. It is supposed that where only one species occurs that ranges will continue to be extended with talpoides being limited to the more moist areas. The other ecological factors are of no apparent significance to the distribution of either species except as they relate to the amount of available moisture.

During the period of October to April of the winter of 1950-51, an ecological study was undertaken of a population or passerine birds wintering in a segment of the Utah Lake Shore. Available winter weather data indicated that although such factors as precipitation, temperature, and wind may often be severe, they are not critical enough to prevent a fairly large population of passerine birds from spending the winter months in the study locale. Five fairly distinct plant communities can be recognized in the area. There is evidence which indicates that certain passerine bird species are especially dependent on a particular type or types of vegetation. The plant communities produce ample amounts of food to meet the requirements of wintering birds. It was found that nine passerine species play an important part in the natural economy of this area in winter. Such species as the song sparrow and marsh wren are relatively stable in their numbers and occurrence, and have number per hour ratings which are significant. Other birds, among them the redwing and crow occur here in great numbers but fluctuate widely in day by day totals. Their number per hour ratings are comparatively meaningless as an index to relative numbers, but are significant in that they indicate different modes of habit of these birds. The thesis is intended to be a contribution to our knowledge of the wintering habits of perching birds in lakeside areas or central Utah.

The purpose of this study was to determine the species of fleas infesting the mammals of the families Cricetidae and Muridae in Utah County. This was accomplished by establishing twelve collecting stations throughout the county from which 198 mammals were collected. From these hosts, 392 fleas were collected representing three families, nineteen genera , and twenty-four species. Four species are new to the State of Utah and twenty-two species are recorded from Utah County for the first time.

Research was conducted to determine the effect of prey numbers on the nesting success of the Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis). Conditions associated with nest site selection were also established. Frequent visits were made to active nests to determine clutch sizes, hatching dates and fledging success. Prey remains were collected from nests and analyzed. Kilometer square transects were made throughout the study area in 1974 to determine jackrabbit densities. A drastic decline in numbers of Ferruginous Hawks occurred. The number of young fledged also declined throughout the study while nestling mortality increased. Jackrabbit numbers were high in 1972 and then declined prior to the spring of 1973. The decline in hawk numbers appeared to be directly correlated with the reduction in prey densities. No directional trend was evident in nest exposure. Shade was not an apparent requirement in nest site selection. Tree nests tended to be in isolated trees that were taller than those surrounding them.

The purpose of this study is to add to our knowledge of the embryology and osteology of the Weberian apparatus as found in the sucker, Catostamus ardens J. & G. ot Utah Lake. Observations were made on the embryological development for twenty one days. This information has been discussed and pictures showing the development included. The literature on the osteology ot the Weberian apparatus was reviewed and it is believed that this study presents the first descriptions of the bones of this species. The ossicles were found to be comparatively stable within species indicating some taxonomic value. More study is needed, however, before any definite statement can be made.
